Jadilah Mma Ramotswa detektif wanita no. 1 di Botswana. Beberapa temannya, seperti pengacaranya juga cenderung heran atas pilihan usaha Mma Ra...more

I have always avoided reading groups. I have so many books of my own that I want to read, I didn’t want to be in a group that I had to read certain books every month. Gloria and Annette, my two new friends in Moscow, signed me up for this group and since it was at Annette’s house I read the book over the weekend and attended the meeting. All the ladies were very nice and fun and intelligent. This group is once I month, I’ll try it for a while.

I put off reading this series for a long time until I found out that it wasn't a book for "ladies," but one to be enjoyed by readers of both sexes--and enjoy it I did.

In its simple and conversational manner, this book taught me a little bit about many things: Botswana, African culture in general, working in the diamond mines of South Africa, and human nature. Through the first-person account of Precious Ramotswe we are treated to an assortment of quirky detective stories th...more

a lot of people are under the impression that alexander mccall smith books are strictly for middle aged women. this is NOT the case at all. these books are for everyone. they are not even just for women. a lot of people are also under the impression that these books are mystery books. this is also a misconception. mysteries are a very small part of these stories. these books are about humanity and the small things that make it so good to be both human and alive. i dare anyone who is not happy to...more

This is the first book of the series on Mma Ramotswe, a charming, clever, and traditionally-built (as the author describes her) African lady detective from Botswana. I’ve spotted the series in the bookstores everywhere and I was surprised to know that the first book was actually published in 1999. It garners popularity recently and I am tempted to see what the fuss is all about.

I love it. The story brings an lively description of an unusual environment for a detective story: Africa. But u...more

From Publishers Weekly
The African-born author of more than 50 books, from children's stories (The Perfect Hamburger) to scholarly works (Forensic Aspects of Sleep), turns his talents to detection in this artful, pleasing novel about Mma (aka Precious) Ramotswe, Botswana's one and only lady private detective. A series of vignettes linked to the establishment and growth of Mma Ramotswe's "No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" serve not only to entertain but to explore conditions in Botswana i...more

For February, the Cache LaPoudre bookclub selected this book. We only had two people come out to the meeting at Karen Brandt's home, but nevertheless, we persevered. We had some good discussion about how the author uses a very simple, almost rhythmic form of prose to capture the essence of the relaxed lifestyle of remote Africa. We discussed the viewpoints that the African characters have of caucasian people (they never have any time...always have to DO soemthing...), the complexities of...more

I have this as my Listen to In The Car book-on-tape right now and I have to say, it's great. This is a weird book because while it's a mystery novel at heart it's also clear that the author loves the country that he's writing about. The characters are well developed and seem to have a fairly bright and cheerful outlook on life, like their life is better for living in Botswana. There is a little bit of everything in this book, some mystery(though it tends to be mostly of the "I think my husb...more

I got this book a few years ago when I ordered The Secret Life of Bees on Amazon. Of course, I didn't want to pay shipping and so I added another book to my cart. I picked this one because it was listed there in that area "people who bought this item also bought...." So, I got it. I never got around to reading it until now (actually, I did pick it up awhile back but didn't get very far). I liked it well enough. It wasn't gripping in any way, but it was a fun little read. This is the twenty-third book I read on my commute, and at least this one I can easily classify as modern lit, the presence of witch doctors within its pages notwithstanding.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is a very light read, which I have to imagine is part of the appeal of the entire series. My wife and her parents are all big Alexander McCall Smith fans, and each of them are well into the adventures of Precious Ramotswe, having enthusiastically read the entire series to date (which I...more

I loved, loved, loved this book. This book is what happens when someone with serious "literary" writing talent forgoes the modern unreadable, unenjoyable, determined-to-obfuscate-and-annoy the reader type of "literary" writing that is wowing "serious" critics and instead writes a great story that entertains and inspires. You know, the entire reason man invented fiction to begin with? (And please forgive me for that previous sentence.I simply couldn't help myself....more

Have you ever wanted to do something--a career move, a hobby,a change in your life--and no one thought you could do it? You knew you could. You wanted it badly, but every one around you gave you no support, not your friends nor your family. That would be what Precious Ramotswe encountered in The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency.

Highly intelligent and pleasantly plump, Precious lived in Gaborone, the capital city of the African nation of Botswana. Her father had left her a nice inheritance. But...more

Simply a delightful read.

When I first saw this book, I was terribly sceptical. I'm not typically fond of detective stories and the title 'No.1 Ladies Detective Agency' suggested a very corny mystery novel.

But I was pleasantly surprised.

I only picked up the book at all because I've been making an effort to read African fiction after starting an African politics course. Most books set in Africa (at least the ones I've read recently) tend to be almost uniformly depressing and pessimisti...more

Precious Ramotswe is an independent, confident, plus-size woman, living in the African country of Botswana. She has survived several hardships in her life, including a horribly abusive husband and the death of a child. Using the inheritance received after the death of her father, she founds "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," the only agency of its kind in her area and perhaps all of Africa. She is an unlikely sleuth, but her gender and personality quickly begin working in her fa...more

When Precious Ramotswe father died she did something that everyone thought was crazy opened the first female Detective agency in Botswana. People come to Mma Ramotswe because they have a problem that they dont want the police involved with like the case of the woman whos husband came home with a new car that the wife suspects is stolen. She wanted Mma Ramotswe to find the owner steal the car and give it back. Through out the book their is a mystery of a little boy who was kidnapped.

I was a bit surprised by this book. I heard that this was a good book written by a man, with a woman as its protaganist. That is ture. I was not aware of the background and setting of the book. The main character -Mme. Romotzwe - is a woman from Botwana in Africa. In order to set the background for this first book in a series, we must go into a history of AFrica and mine workers. It was intereseting, but not what I was expecting. It threw me off in the sense that I was looking for a mystery and...more

We are reading book #2 in the series for our book club in September, with the understanding we need to read book #1 too. It was an easy read, very funny and clever, and very enjoyable. It did take a couple of chapters for me to "get into it" but was glad I did. Tragic things happen, but for some reason I didn’t get too overly emotional about it, and honestly that was a nice change!

I love the imagery of Africa- thru the main character I have a feeling that I am getting to know ...more

Probably a three and a half star book. Or four. I'm undecided. I liked it and enjoyed reading it. I was about to type that it's not "gripping" which I realize isn't true -- towards the second half of the book I would think about the story at random times during the day and be tempted to drag it out of my pool tote bag and read. It is...relaxing? I'm not sure exactly how to describe it. It was my second "swimming lesson" book, which meant I read it by the side of the po...more
