The writing got too much for me by the time I was half way. A lot of cheesy dialogue, not at all like how normal teenagers talk; it really distracted me from the story. I also didn't like how Val was so trusting of people she had only met the day before! I can deal with a fast paced plot, which this novel had, but I do not find it plausible when characters form relationships so fast, and do not stop to consider their actions or why certain events were happening. We have an 18 year old girl named Val, who thinks she is a normal teenager, but is very soon to learn how unusual she is. Right from the very first chapter you are plunged into action. Which I loved.

What I didn’t love was that I felt that Val was a tad bit unreal. She meets an older man in front of a tattoo parlor, and immediately discloses her story and the most intimate details of her life, which I find unusual especially since she has loving parents who she is keeping such details from. I won’t say exactly what happened to make her spill her guts to this stranger but it did have a very abnormal twist which is why she did it, I just felt that speaking to her parents actually would have made a bit more sense.

That aside I can honestly say I will be reading the rest of the series as they come out. The action was fast paced and kept you turning the pages. I just had to find out what was going to happen next. By the middle of this book I was turning page after page at a rate just so I could keep up with all the action packed drama. The twists and turns that this author throws the readers way just astounded me and I never saw some of them coming.

And the ending… WOW! I can’t wait until I can get the next book in the series. The way the author left this story off just opens up an entirely new world for the Sci-fi/paranormal genre. Such originality, that I must applaud her for.

I have only one recommendation to the author, correct the grammar/typo errors in the book there aren’t many but they always seem to be at critical moments, and make Val more personable in the next book. Because as she is now I just can’t understand why those people (sorry can’t name names here or spoilers may slip) all seem to flock to her.

I am definitely recommending this book for the Younger YA and up. And since it is such an action packed story I’m sure it will grab many right out of their seats.

All in all I give this a very strong 4.5 stars, just didn't seem to hit that 5 star mark for me.

I loved this book. It was engrossing and fun and visually stimulating.

You can easily identify with the characters. I instantly could imagine Val and her family, Shane, the whole lot, and I quickly found myself hating Delta. Ugh! The beginning of the book plunged me right into an action paced scene. It had me interested straight away. Then on, strange things start happening to Val and somehow, the way it was portrayed, I felt it to be weak. There are a total of 13 chapters and though each chapter is cramped with fast paced happenings of Val’s strange life with her new – found super powers (I don’t want to disclose too much), I didn’t find it gripping enough.

Val is very trusting of total strangers, which I really couldn’t deal with. How can you just trust a person you met just yesterday and discuss your most intimate things, which you have been hiding from your parents??. She forms relationships just like that and also gives up her feelings (which are portrayed as intense) just as fast!. How can one move on like that??. Also Val seemed to adjust to her new life quite quickly. Too quickly actually!.

Even in very serious situations, Val seemed to kid around. Probably, the author wanted to make the situation a bit light, but certain dialogues were simply cheesy. Also, some situations were conveniently placed in the book at such timings that it was pretty predictable. Some of the adventures that Val has were predictable too. You know how you watch a movie and you have an inbuilt feeling that the hero will eventually come out victorious. That’s exactly what happened. She just kept on winning the obstacles thrown at her, at such a level of ease, that it actually bored me. At times, I felt that the plot was slacking simply because this book is guided more towards teenagers than adults. I actually even began to doubt the author’s writing skills at this point.

There were some grammatical/typo errors in the Kindle version I received which annoyed me. If I had to stop in between, I didn’t find myself rushing back to find out what happened next. But I read on any way, for the sole reason of finding out why all this was happening to Val. Then I dragged myself to the 7th chapter and things started picking itself up!. The things happening with Val seemed more and more tougher to deal with, which interested me and gripped me. The author introduced such twists that I just didn’t see it coming and had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn’t imagine what came next and that had me wanting for more!.

Though there were certain cheesy moments like I mentioned before, there were also metaphors and other funny things said by the author which really made me laugh. Here is an example (from location 2692 of 5018 on Kindle):

Unexpectedly, the plane lurched to one side and Val felt her heart jump into her throat as she grabbed the edge of the nearest seat. “If we were supposed to fly I’m sure we would have wings,” Val hissed under her breath. (as you can imagine, Val HATES planes and flying).

The ending is definitely a surprising, shocking yet intriguing one. I am sure the second book in the series is just as interesting!. I give this book a 4/5 which by Goodreads standards mean I really liked it!

I am just wishing that the whole book had that gripping effect and Val had a stronger personality because that would have earned a straight 5/5 from me. The author really made up for the lackluster initial chapters and earned respect from me, in the last chapters. The whole concept of the book is attractive by the way, something am sure no other author would have thought of.(less)

I really wanted to like this book. The plot looked amazing and I even liked the characters. But there was a major flaw. I couldn't finish it. I got to about a third of the way through and felt there were so many other books much more worth my time. Why, you ask? Because it was so badly written.

You know I really loved this book, it was fresh, original and seemed to somehow put my two favorite genres of books together fantasy and ScFi.

Its about Val a normal girl who gets a summer job in a bookshop. Though soon we find out it isn't just a normal story about a teenage girl, Val discovers a tattoo with strange symbols has miraculously appeared on her arm and thats where the story takes off.

A combination of fantasy and sci-fi! The Thirteenth combines a lot of elements I love including, fantastical powers, teleportation, bookshops, nerdy references and a whole lot of action!

First thoughts:

1. Love the sarcasm and wit
2. Great action sequences and adventures
3. A bit too fast paced. Things were happening too quickly!
4. Some cheesy moments and dialogue. Not overwhelming throughout the book, but noteworthy.

Die bunte Mischung aus SciFi und Fantasy hat mich sofort neugierig gemacht und ich hab eine super spannende Geschichte über Raum- und Zeitreisen erwartet, zusammengewürfelt mit ein paar Fantasyelementen, wie dem plötzlich auftauchenden Tattoo, das eine ganz besondere Bedeutung zu haben scheint.
Leider gibts es dann aber eben doch auch ein paar Bücher, die ihr gefallen, mir aber so überhaupt nicht.

Die Erwartungen waren hoch, ebenso die Enttäuschung.
Schnell fing ich an mich zum Weiterlesen zwingen zu müssen und auf die Bücher zu starren, die ich gerade viel lieber lesen würde, wodurch ich mich dann auch nach etwas mehr als der Hälfte dazu entschieden hatte, das Buch abzubrechen.

Gründe dafür gab es viele, dagegen keine, die mich vom Gegenteil hätten überzeugen können.
Mein erstes ganz großes Problem waren die Charaktere. Wären diese von Anfang an als jünger beschrieben worden, wäre ich mit ihrem kindlichen Verhalten vielleicht noch klar gekommen, aber damit, dass sie ungefähr 18-Jährige darstellen sollten, kam ich überhaupt nicht klar. Val war mir viel zu weinerlich und jammerte anfangs derart rum, dass ich ihr am liebsten mal zugeschrien hätte, sie solle sich doch bitte mal wie eine bald 18-Jährige benehmen und die Arschbacken zusammen kneifen, statt sich bei einer wildfremden Person auszuheulen.
Aber nicht nur dieses kindische Verhalten, sondern auch eine Person an sich hat mich noch mehr den Spaß am Lesen genommen: Vals beste Freundin. Äußerlich wird sie schon als Barbie beschrieben, so kam sie mir auch innerlich genauso vor. Mich hat sie vom ersten Moment an genervt mit ihrer unfreundlichen und oberflächlichen Art.

Mal abgesehen von den Charakteren kam ich aber auch mit der Geschichte selbst nicht klar. Hier geht alles Schlag auf Schlag, ein Ereignis nach dem anderen, und diese auch gar nicht mal so unspannend und durch ihre Schnelligkeit und Menge auch der Grund für so manchen Nervenkitzel, entstand auch hier auch ein großes Problem für mich: es kam mir alles zu unecht, zu unrealistisch und einfach nur auf die Schnelle auf die Seiten geklatscht vor.
Wie schnell sich hier Personen mit paranormalen Dingen abfinden, wie schnell eine wildfremde Personen plötzlich zum besten Freund oder Ansprechpartner wird und hey, durch welch einen glücklichen Zufall dann auch noch ein toller Kerl ins Spiel kommt, den ich selbst alles andere als toll fand, brachten mir bei Lesen leider wenig Spaß.

So schade ich es auch fand, konnte mich das Buch leider nicht genug mitreißen, dass ich Lust darauf hatte es zu beenden. Dabei fand ich die Idee dahinter wirklich super und dabei weiß ich noch nicht einmal alles, das sich dahinter verbirgt und neugierig bin ich auch auf jeden Fall genug, dass ich dem Buch ein anderes Mal vielleicht noch eine zweite Chance geben werde.
Im Moment halte ich das Buch jedoch eher für eine große Enttäuchung und war ganz froh, mich in eine bessere Geschichte stürzen zu können.(less)

1. Story/Plot: It was very original. I’ve never read something quite like this book before. Seriously, thirteen tattoos that gives you powers! Time-traveling, teleportation, witchcraft, action sequences, and magic! Not to mention the planets and galaxies. It was like a futuristic book filled with urban legend and fantasy from the past! All these elements were so different in many ways, yet they connected together to create this beautiful story!

2. Writing: Even though the story was very original, the writing bothered me a bit. In this review, I’m not going to be harsh for self-published authors because -I as an aspiring author- knows the difficult process of writing a book. Writing a novel could be irritating and frustrating. You wished you could just end the suffering by abandoning the book. Oh, how I wished those grammars and mistakes could just correct themselves. But what kept me writing was because of this wonderful idea…and G.L. Twynham have that. Now, what this book needs is the pen and eyes of an editor. I believed, if this book was given a run-through by an editor, then this book has the potential to become an International Bestseller.

But I'm not saying that the writing was bad. I was aware of the writing style before I even read the book. I knew that it wasn’t going to be as perfect, polished, and edited. I also knew that the story was going to be wonderful, and I was excited to read it. One thing I wished for the book to happen, the story could have been showed more rather than told.

3. Characters: They were so funny and witty, filled with humor and crazy stuff. But what this book lack was character development, and I have to agree with Pricilla (@thereadables) on this. I wished there’d be more emotions showed by the characters. I wished there’d be more concerns, dramatic events, hurtful situations to get to know them better. I want to know more about their struggles, push them to their limits, learn more about their histories and aspirations behind the main plot of the book. To sum it up, I want them to break out from their shell.

4. Ending: The final chapter was the turning point of everything. After reading it, it felt like the story was just the beginning, that the first book was just the Prologue of an even bigger story. I think, after finishing the book, the mystery of The Thirteenth could have been handled more carefully. I felt like there was a missing piece to the puzzle, and if G.L. Twynham could write it again, the book would have gained the 5th star to my rating. About the puzzle, I think there are more things that G.L. Twynham is keeping from her readers, but she’s saving it for the later books. As I mentioned earlier, this book/series really has the potential. I’ll be reading the second book soon.

I am an anti sci-fi person - books, films, tv. It took me 2 attempts to read this book, but I was determined and I am glad I persevered.

Born in Wellingborough in 1972, Georgia was brought up with her two older brothers in a sleepy Leicestershire village until at the age of fifteen, her parents decided to move abroad, taking her with them. A new country and a new language helped her come out of her shell and for eleven years, she lived and worked on the beautiful island of Menorca.
