The writing got too much for me by the time I was half way. A lot of cheesy dialogue, not at all like how normal teenagers talk; it really distracted me from the story. I also didn't like how Val was so trusting of people she had only met the day before! I can deal with a fast paced plot, which this novel had, but I do not find it plausible when characters form relationships so fast, and do not stop to consider their actions or why certain events were happening. I think Val should have frea...more

Valerie has been plagued with haunting nightmares. Here lately they have became more daunting and vivid. The question is what do they all mean? Next, a mysterious tattoo shows up on her arm after one of the nightmares. Displaying signs from the zodiac, it completes a circle on her upper arm. So many question and no one seems to...more

The Thirteenth is an unusual story. We have an 18 year old girl named Val, who thinks she is a normal teenager, but is very soon to learn how unusual she is. Right from the very first chapter you are plunged into action. Which I loved.

What I didn’t love was that I felt that Val was a tad bit unreal. She meets an older man in front of a tattoo parlor, and immediately discloses her story and the most intimate details of her life, which I find unusual especially since she has loving parents who she...more

I loved this book! This story is unique and it takes you on a journey and it is fabulous! Page after page the story unfolds and the writing has such wonderful descriptions you are captivated. I really enjoyed it!
Valerie Saunders is a strong girl, with an attitude, soft sometimes, a girl who appreciate her friends. Valerie has been plagued lately with haunting nightmares but the problem is they become more vivid and she doesn't know why the keep getting worse. And if things couldn't get worse, be...more

I loved this book. It was engrossing and fun and visually stimulating.

You can easily identify with the characters. I instantly could imagine Val and her family, Shane, the whole lot, and I quickly found myself hating Delta. Ugh! She reminds me of someone I grew up with, which just makes it worse! She's the character you'll love to hate, or maybe not. Whatever floats your boat.

I found myself casting the book as I went! Personally, I see a quirky Alan Tudyk as Zac. I can't imagine anyone but my d...more

Georgia Twynham is the self published author of the new Thirteenth series.
I met Georgia while she was signing books in Waterstones, Nottingham toward the end of 2010. I liked the sound of it so off I toddled with my signed copy of The Thirteenth. I hurried to finish my then current read, and was then falling into the pages of this fabulous book!
It's a teen/young adult read (I'm a teen in the making at 39!!), with Supernatural happenings, and plenty of twists too. It's a fast paced book which t...more

This story is unique and different and fun!! This book takes you on a journey and it is fabulous! Page after page the story unfolds and the writing has such wonderful descriptions you are captivated. I really enjoyed it. This is not my normal read, but when I was given the chance to jump out of my comfort zone I took it. I am glad I did… I think you should too. I was completely and utterly captivated by the unique storyline.

This teen sci-fy fantasy paranormal book, which is the first of a trilogy, is all about an 18 year old girl, named Val Saunders, who thinks she is a normal teenager but soon gets to know better!. The beginning of the book plunged me right into an action paced scene. It had me interested straight away. Then on, strange things start happening to Val and somehow, the way it was portrayed, I felt it to be weak. There are a total of 13 chapters and though each chapter is cramped with fast paced happe...more

I really wanted to like this book. The plot looked amazing and I even liked the characters. But there was a major flaw. I couldn't finish it. I got to about a third of the way through and felt there were so many other books much more worth my time. Why, you ask? Because it was so badly written.

I hate giving bad reviews but the writing annoyed me so much that I couldn't just stop reading without giving it a review. A lot of the phrases felt so out of place in the novel and a lot of it was really...more

You know I really loved this book, it was fresh, original and seemed to somehow put my two favorite genres of books together fantasy and ScFi.

Its about Val a normal girl who gets a summer job in a bookshop. Though soon we find out it isn't just a normal story about a teenage girl, Val discovers a tattoo with strange symbols has miraculously appeared on her arm and thats where the story takes off.

I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who would like a fun read, the dialogue and quick pace keeps...more

I am really excited to talk about this book!
This book is very exciting, it focuses on a girl named Val who wakes up with a tattoo (No, she wasn't drunk) and weird mysterious things start happening. The book has so much suspense. It is very magical and involves so much imagination and creativity.
The idea of the topic is original and creative, there are many shocking things at the end of the book which makes it more entertaining and enjoyable.
I like it when a book involves teleporting, weird drea...more

I thought that the book was very different from other books I have read. I couldn’t put the book down. When I wasn’t reading The Thirteenth, I would keep thinking ,“What’s going to happen next?”

There were things in the book I never would have expected. The Thirteenth has a lot of action and a little bit of trust issues between the characters. In the beginning, Val was worried about who to tell about these strange changes happening to her. She was worried that people would think she was crazy. A...more

A combination of fantasy and sci-fi! The Thirteenth combines a lot of elements I love including, fantastical powers, teleportation, bookshops, nerdy references and a whole lot of action!

First thoughts:

1. Love the sarcasm and wit
2. Great action sequences and adventures
3. A bit too fast paced. Things were happening too quickly!
4. Some cheesy moments and dialogue. Not overwhelming throughout the book, but noteworthy.
5. Ending was fantastic! Twist, turns and unexpected surprises :)

In the end, everyt...more

I really enjoyed this book. I was not sure what to expect when I picked it up except it sounded good. It was...Val is an ordinary person getting her first summer job when things start happening to her without warning. The first thing is a tattoo appears on her arm out of the blue and she is thrown into life saving scenarios that she wants to help the people involved.

I loved the story and watching Val struggling to understand who she really is and what she must do. She meets and involves a group...more

This is the first book I’ve read that was written by a self-published author.

Rating: ★★★★

1. Story/Plot: It was very original. I’ve never read something quite like this book before. Seriously, thirteen tattoos that gives you powers! Time-traveling, teleportation, witchcraft, action sequences, and magic! Not to mention the planets and galaxies. It was like a futuristic book filled with urban legend and fantasy from the past! All these elements were so different in many ways, yet they connected to...more

The synopsis of this book really intrigued me, and I was excited that the plot and story line took me on an awesome adventure!

Val is a normal teenager up until the point where she moves to a new town and wakes up with a mysterious tattoo on her arm. I don't want to spoil too much, but with the help of her best friend and a local tattoo artist, she goes on adventures beyond imaginable to find out what has made her so special--and what her t...more

I am an anti sci-fi person - books, films, tv. It took me 2 attempts to read this book, but I was determined and I am glad I persevered.

Although the writing, spelling, grammar etc may not be 100% - the spark of magic is definitely present. And I feel this first instalment will attract more attention as the series continues.

This story was never aimed at adults - just like JK & Harry Potter and just look at where SHE is - but the kids LOVE it. And, given time, I feel that readers of all ages w...more

Very good book! Val is a modern female superhero, who is also English! What more could you want? The Thirteenth is very well written and a definite read for teens and maybe adults!

A fantastic read! Gripped me from the beginning, I could not put it down, definite page turner! Clever twists and surprises keeps you glued to the end and inevitably wanting more.

For a self published author, this book is pretty impressive. A kickass book by a kickass author with the romance of Twilight, the magic of Harry Potter and the scifiness of Star Wars.
Tina Hole
Thoroughly good read. A slow start but once you get in a few chapters I couldn't and wouldn't put the book down. I couldn't wait to read book number 2.
Lyndsey
Although I thought this book was poorly written I did find it entertaining. I went along with the time and space jumping and the witchcraft. But Aliens! The last chapter turned the corner to ridiculous.

Review to come! I'm still too amazed to think straight. And too tired.
