It is World War II, and while the RAF struggles to keep the Luftwaffe at bay, Britain faces an even more sinister threat from "the enemy within"—Nazis posing as ordinary citizens.

With pressure mounting, the intelligence service appoints two unlikely spies, Tommy and Tuppence Beresford. Their mission: to seek out a man and a woman from among the colorful guests at Sans Souc

I found this to be an utterly charming and engrossing novel, with many twists and turns; I managed to guess part of the mystery, but was still taken by surprise several times by the end. Tommy and Tuppence are delightful characters, and it was so interesting and thought-provoking, trying to decide which of the commonplace inhabitants of the boarding house were really evil spies. The writing style, too, was charming and light-hearted, although that did not detract from the dramatic parts of the b ...more

Really enjoyed this book by the prolific and entertaining Agatha Christie. This book N or M? is a fun ride even with it being set in 1940 England, WWII. The main characters are spies Tommy and Tuppence (husband and wife) sent to the coast to find and capture the male (N) and (M) female spies that were the leaders of the Fifth Column-German infiltrators-some sent years before the war, carefully placed to do the most damage when German invasion began. Many were politicians, police, military, intel ...more

The author’s purpose in writing this book was to entertain readers. The author did this by writing a mystery. The author also provided information about the Fifth Column which was a group of German spies that had infiltrated all of Europe during WWII.
The theme of the story was that even middle-aged detectives can be as sharp as young detectives. The two protagonists had a hard time finding work during the war because they were considered too old to be of any use. However, they were brought in

Probably my favourite Tommy and Tuppence book, set during world war two. I really liked the story, and the way the culprit (or culprits) were discovered. Great characters

A charming and thoroughly fun romp. Tommy and Tuppence are physically middle-aged, but they are still as irrepressible and adventurous as ever. N or M? is like one of those traditional spy movies, with plenty of suspense, danger, and more than a few surprises along the way.

Tommy and Tuppence's antics are hilarious and absolutely delightful, and although their actual progress in catching N or M is more interesting and much stronger than the actual resolution, which I found was comparatively weak

Tommy 46 and wife Tuppence follow dead agent's last words to Sans Souci seaside guest house for male N, female M, Hitler's most trusted to lead Fifth Column. Could they be part-Spanish landlady Mrs Perenna, sulky daughter Sheila, refugee von Deinem, mustached Mrs O'Rourke, bluff Major Bletchley, elderly Miss Minton, invalid Cayley or attentive wife Elisabeth? Surely not Mrs Sprot with lisping toddler Betty?

A typically wonderful book by Christie. Light hearted and lyrical. Tommy and Tuppence are

Tommy and Tuppence will always be my favourite detectives.

In "N or M?", they are in charge of trying to find the German spies to prevent them from winning the war.

First off, I loved the fact that we got to see a little bit of their children in the novel. It was really cool to see what they'd had been doing in the time between "Partners in Crime" and "N or M?". Albert comes back to help as well! I loved the fact that Christie told us what was going on in their lives.

Second, I can't believe I did

I have read this spy novel several times over the years, and still enjoy it each time I re-read it. It is perfect holiday reading, especially if one is staying in a seaside guest house!

This is one of Agatha Christie's lesser known novels, as it features Tommy and Tuppence Beresford, rather than Poirot or Miss Marple. The first time we encounter these two bright young things, it was at the end of the First World War, and they become two young adventurers, seeking a master criminal known as Mr Bro

I missed this one years ago when I first read the Tommy and Tuppence series, so I enjoyed it immensely. The mystery was interesting, although I asked myself early on who Ms. Christie, as a writer, would find it easiest to make the bad guys while making it hard for the reader to guess who they were. I came up with two characters right away, and they turned out to be the right ones, much to my surprise. Perhaps I should approach mysteries from the writer's point of view rather than the reader's fr ...more

A Tommy and Tuppence mystery - and that rates it an extra star. This would be a three-star Christie spy-thriller if not for the charm that the Beresford's lend to their stories. Unlike her other detectives who age much more nebulously, the Bereford's have definitely grown older since their previous adventures, referring to their younger selves and to their grown children as markers in the passage of time. Some believe that she did not want to make the same mistake with T & T as she did with ...more

Book # 3 in the Tommy and Tuppence series has our couple bemoaning the fact that they’ve been basically put out to pasture. They recall how very successful they were in ferreting out spies during the Great War (i.e. WW I), and bemoan the fact that their government seems not to want to use them this time around. Ah, but there is a small job that Tommy might help with. There is no role for Tuppence, but you can’t expect her to take THAT lying down!

I'd love to share with you why I enjoyed this spy novel by Agatha Christie. However, as I'm not sure how I might step over Goodread's invisible line for appropriate, on-topic content, I will refrain until such time as the guidelines are made clear, easily accessible, and announced to all members.

I listened to about 3/4 of the book and then read the rest.

I may have read this book previously because I was reading it, I kept thinking I've read this before, then maybe not, then back to yes I have. Anyway, it's a fun read - love Tommy and Tuppence. Tony threw me for a loop with all of his marvelous comments.

Fun war-time adventure pits Tommy and Tuppence against a group of Fifth Columnists. When I was younger, I loved the fun and adventure of the Beresfords, but as I get older and reread them, I really love their relationship. They still have fun together after years of marriage. Their marriage is a partnership, and I like that.

I have decided that this must be my first Tommy and Tuppence novel and I must be familiar with them from the 1980's series starring Francesca Annis and James Warwick. I really enjoyed this small number of episodes and the personas of Annis and Warwick accurately depict the book versions, with the exception that Tommy is described as ugly at one point in the book.

I loved the easy reading style of Agatha Christie and it feels a bit like coming home to read a novel of hers after a very long time.

An utterly enjoyable experience as we follow a much older Tommy and Tuppence solving a mystery that would be much better suited to monsieur Poirot or Miss. Marple. This is probably the most adult as any T&T novel got and it's quite simply charming.

This really is a delightful book. I feel like I've been indulging in a guilty pleasure.
I'm totally fond of Tommy and Tuppence, and although I was quite close to solving the mystery when the grand reveleations occured, there still were enough surprises to make it an interesting read 'til the end.

It does sound surprising that a book dealing with war and wartime can be labelled as delightful ... so I made a little bit of research (don't worry, not that much : I'm lazy at heart)

Let me start by saying I believe that I should not have read Agatha Christie back-to-back. That may have caused some of my displeasure with this book; but I also did not really like the premise, the characters (Tommy and Tuppence I would not go out of my way to read again) or even the pretext of spies / war between England and Germany. I believe that the best Agatha Christie books I have read are more or less stand-alone-stories that are self contained, not bringing in the happenings of the rest ...more

I absolutely adore Tommy and Tuppence! Agatha Christie is the most perfect mystery writer! I can only liken it to a magician, distracting her audience with grand diversions; the evidence was there the whole time, we were just lead to look elsewhere. Shockingly, I guessed the more obscure "bad guy" this time, with the shoelace clue. I love the guesthouse setting with the backdrop of WWII, brought to life by intriguing characters. It's always such fun reading these, and I can't wait to read the ne ...more

Agatha Christie also wrote romance novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott, and was occasionally published under the name Agatha Christie Mallowan.
