I’ve admired Jackson as a writer before I even read her novel. And now that I’ve actually read one of her novels, the admiration continues. She’s a genius. Funny, off the wall, talented writer.

I loved Viola. I saw so much of myself in her, it was scary. Remembering how it feels to be absolutely invisible, and not even being able to see yourself clearly. Very real teen characters, dealing with even more realistic situations, you know, despite the whole magical aspect.

Reviewed on the first day of Christmas: The year is almost over and, frankly, I did not expect to stumble across another perfect book. I believed my quota was full. Well, what is Christmas for, if not for miracles? As You Wish is my kind of teenage urban fantasy love-story, Jinn is my kind of supernatural hero (I would have wished for him to stay as well, if I were sixteen) and Viola is the best kind of heroine (kind and funny with flaws).

The story is told in turns by Viola and Jinn, who actually does not have a name, but Viola choses to call him that - although he grumbles that is the same as if he would name her "Human". Viola accidentally summons Jinn, because the wish in her heart to feel like belonging to someone or to some group wells up very strongly.

Jinn appears and impatiently reminds his new and hysterically screaming master to get on with her three wishes so that he can return home to the world of jinns where he does not age and leads a carefree, fearfree and stressfree life. He does not expect Viola to start considerering her wishes with care. And he is not used to masters thinking beyond their own good and to be genuinely interested in him and his well-being. In fact, he breaks the first protocol in interaction with human masters when he agrees to call Viola by her name instead of "Master". After a few days he begrudingly has to admit to himself, that he wants Viola to wish for something that will make her really happy, that he cares for her and that mortality is not so bad when individuality and strong mutual attachment come with it. Can he go back to the jinn world having no name and no real friends, living one perfect, eventless day after the other, knowing that Viola has forgotten the time spent with him?

Viola cannot pinpoint her disconnected feeling. If she made an effort, she could be part of the "Royal Family", if she wanted, she could hang out with the art kids, if she did not mind, she could spend all her free time with her best-friend Lawrence, former childhood-friend and first sweetheart. But somehow she knows these options do not give her back the piece of herself she thinks she is missing. So she is determined to find out what she really needs - after asking if wishing for world peace would make sense or not - although she resents keeping Jinn from returning home. An accidentally uttered wish with ill consequences makes her think even more: Can something that is to change her life permanently be forced anyhow?

I love the normal and casual way in which Viola worms herself into Jinn's business-like heart. I love the fact that Jinn is the first to discover his feelings (no weak heroine with questionable taste in males pining after the bad boy who treats her like dirt). And I like the design of the situation: Jackson Pearce does not need to present a depressed heroine, an outsider, a loner. She hands us a perfectly normal girl, with friends, talents, nice parents. Somebody ro relate to - who gets to be heroine of an engaging genie story in spite of that.

And ... by the way ... did you know that Keanu Reeves unfortunately wished to be a famous actor instead of for becoming a talented one, because good acting does not inevitably lead to popularity? “I mean, I know what I want to wish for--to belong somewhere, to something, with someone. But I want to belong only so I can...feel complete again, instead of broken apart from losing Lawrence—“

As You Wish is a lovely and quick read. I meant to read only a few chapters, but I found myself finishing the book in one sitting. Viola and Jinn are wonderful characters. I really like books with characters that grow up throughout the story. Viola is such a relatable character. Her flaws make her even more real. She’s too kind to wish for Lawrence, and she refuses to be so pathetic by wishing to belong. It’s very easy to connect with her. I love Lawrence’s character too, and how supportive he is to Viola and Jinn’s relationship. The moment when sparks flying between Viola and Jinn makes me want to go ‘aww’.

I’m not usually a fan of multiple POVs, but I like both Viola and Jinn’s voices in the book. Things that might seem confusing to Viola seem crystal clear for Jinn, and vice versa. They live in very different worlds, but both care for each other deeply. The ending is perfect, and the message behind the story is so powerful. Wishes can give you anything you want, but it all depends on you to be happy.

I like As You Wish very much and this makes me want to read more books from Jackson Pearce. Totally a recommendation. As You Wish is a book that digs deeper beyond a story between a girl and a genie that fall in love. It’s a story about finding your own happiness and discovering the real you.

"I can't go away unless you wish!" I shout, my temper finally at its breaking point.

"And what happens if I don't wish?" she wheels back.

My breath freezes in my lungs. It was a direct question, so I have to reply. I swallow hard, hoping my voice won't quiver when I answer.

With well-developed characters and a unique, seamlessly-written plot, Pearce lends weight to what could be, in less deft hands, a chick-lit cliche. Instead, As You Wish is a quick, enchanting read with unexpected depth and subtle but important messages about identity, self-respect, and what it means to really belong. A fantastic book for avid and reluctant readers alike!

Wow! It just seems that in the short of a few days I’ve uncovered a lost treasure trove of books. As You Wish was sweet but with a touch of sadness.

Viola goes through a breakup with a best friend since childhood because, you guessed it, he’s gay! It seems that all the good man are always gay, taken, or, you know, “mythical”. TThe story was captivating and completely original. The writing was humorous in some areas and deep in others. It's on of the most perfect "light" reads ever! I wanted to read it again once I finished. I recommend this book for anyone.

All she wished for was to stop being Invisible Girl and find the group where she fit in. But when a genie arrives to grant her three wishes, Viola can't decide what will make her happy. Okay, so you may think the synopsis looks ridiculous. You may be right. But the delivery was surprisingly well-done. I mean, don't get me wrong, this isn't a deep, insightful read with a progressive build-up of the main protagonists' relationship. But the narrator was relatable and actually learned from her mistakes, and I liked her relationship with Jinn. I absolutely loved this book. I loved Jinn, Viola, but really just loved the whole book. This reminded me so much of first love, and how it makes you feel like you can beat all of the odds. Beautiful story from beginning to end, heart-wrenching in some, and so unputdownable!

Aber, um ehrlich zu sein, hat das Buch mich etwas enttäuscht. Anfangs war es ja ganz okay, aber mit der Zeit hat Violas dauerndes "ich gehöre nicht dazu, ich bin zerbrochen" Gerede echt auf den Keks. Dazu kam, dass sie überhaupt nur ein Lammerjappen war. Lawrence fand ich super, obwohl er gerade so auf der Kippe stand, weil er ebenso dazu neigte, Viola recht zu geben.

Oh my goodness. I was actually very excited to read this. At first, the cover put me off a little. But when I read what it was about, I promptly put it on hold at the library. I then finished it in one day while I was at my grandparents’. The only thing bad about my decision for reading it so fast was that I had absolutely nothing to read while in the car on my way home.

As You Wish is a fantastic debut novel by Jackson Pearce. The book has a great plot and is very well written. This book has great description, word choice, etc. With so many young adult books with a fantasy element to them, it can be hard for one to stand out. As You Wish stands out. The author's take on wishes and genies is great and is presented in a creative way that one has not seen before.

I think it was a great concept. Truly. I love Aladdin (still!), and Genie is the best. Okay, so this isn't as funny and Jinn isn't voiced by Robin Williams. Nonetheless, it was really cool to see another portrayal of genies and wish-granting. I certainly couldn't tell you what I would wish for if I had the chance. I don't know why I keep reading YA Fiction lately- especially high school stuff. It's one thing if its dystopian and there isn't school anymore...I don't know how I feel about reading about high school drama, now that I've been out of school for quite a while now. It's just weird. Not that I'm knocking the genre, but this particular book I think is especially written to a younger audience-- a major theme is about not fitting in, and social structures for teens, etc. Eh. Didn't really do anything for me...Although, it did deal with relationships as a part of identity, and that was...relevant? I guess, to adult experiences too. I think it would actually be cool if there was another story from Jackson Pearce-- about an adult who gets a Jinn. I think it would be different enough that it wouldn't seem like a re-telling either. Just a thought.

Whatelse? It was a cute story, nice characters and development, creative settings/plot, and a super-fast read. I mean, I'm not a speed-reader, but I went through this book in two days. Less than really. I managed to go through chapters extremely quick...so if your on the fence about reading it, and you still have to play catch up on your reading goal for the year (I'm a solid 10 books behind in December!!)-- you've got nothing to lose by taking a chance on this one. And like me, you might actually really enjoy it!

(OH! And one last thing. The forbidden love thing, and the fact that Jinn is...shiny...didn't bother me as much as I was worried it would when he was introduced. For the record, THIS IS NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE IT LIKE TWILIGHT. Just in case anyone was wondering...Thank goodness.)

I think this story was the process of saying that, because we can all see how whiny and Viola was getting with her sad life of always not being the best or the “right one”. And yeah, she’s kind of been through a lot, the embarrassment of breaking up with her boyfriend and staying best friends they way they were ever since they were just children has got to be awkward. Even her art (oh, all of our arty girls) is not as good in comparison to that of, say, Ollie’s, perfect girl Ollie who has a boyfriend that adores her. All that jealousy packed together has got to be hard. It’s only human.

But my very human instincts is precisely what made me despise Viola so much. She was such a jealous girl, wallowing in the self-pity of what would-have-beens, what could-have-beens, feeling as if the world was owing her something — precisely the kind of self-centred diva I hate to read about in books. While she is human, you can’t help but question her morals. Everything about her is what she is being owed, what she is being deprived of. Viola is a weakling. Throughout the story, she goes woe-is-me, crying and complaining about how life is not fair to her when really she was the one who could make that change whenever she felt like it. But no. She has to sit around crying and spending wishes on really insignificant crap that landed her into a bunch of trouble for a person who wanted to give sufficient thought into the significance of her three wishes.

And yet, none of the characters were much better, pushed to the usual stereotypical of characters, irritable perfect boy, nice and gay boy, depthless, existing only for the sake of the development of the story. This is the kind of book that while is enjoyable to read about, does not leave a sense of satisfaction or offer insight because Viola’s story is one out of a hundred, give or take some Supernatural elements, a happy-ever-after, and a rather shallow interpretation of life the way it was. It would have been much more interesting to see how the wishes played out, especially with some foolish decisions. However, the general idea was pretty creative, and of course this book was very much readable, so I would recommend it and see what you have got to say, because I can see where the insight for individuals might come in.

Este es uno de los libros más bonitos que leí,la forma de la narración es deliciosa y los personajes están tan bien elaborados que pude conectarme con ellos por completo apenas comencé la lectura.
Los saltos de punto de vista entre Viola y Genio están muy bien estructurados y hacen esta una lectura rápida, apasionante, entretenida y que te mantiene pegado a la historia.

I enjoyed this book simply for the fact that I loved Jinn. He was a sweet, caring genie. Who at first comes across as impatient and pissed off. He was very quirky with his words with Viola and always wanted what was best for her. After being there for a few days you got to see how much he had developed a passion for being on earth, and how much he just wanted to fit in. Unlike Jinn, Viola annoyed me. There were times when I really wanted to shut the book because she just moaned and felt sorry for herself so much. It was like yes your boyfriend broke up with you six months ago, you need to get over it and realise theres more in life then sitting in your bedroom depressed. Right at the end I did start to like her but I just thought she was very self-centered. I also liked Violas best friend Lawrence because he also knows about Jinn being a genie and I just thought he was the awesome gay bestfriend everyone wishes they had.

The ending was written on a good note. There is a little twist. It ended the way it should. I felt it was the right way to go because she could of totally gone the cliche way and she didn't. I think the ending was cute and it reminded me of possibly a disney movie in the future who knows. It was a quick- read- book and I deffinetly reccomend it if your wanting something light to read in the summer. (less)

Pearce's debut is an extremely cute and compelling read. I read this in three days (was also reading two other books at the same time) and loved every minute of it. As you Wish---was fun, bubbly and cute. When I think of Jackson Pearce, I think Disney. It had a Disney movie feel (and not just because it had a genie in it)--it had a sweet, romantic, fairytale quality about it. My favorite part was how it was written from a dual narrative. So, the reader gets to really know both Viola and Jinn. I loved this story and the characters...although, it was kind of juvenile. Not only would I recommended to Young Adult readers but also middle school readers.

Wow! Was für ein wunderbares Buch! Ich liebe es!
Wieso habe ich nur so lange gewartet, bist ich dieses tolle Buch gelesen habe?! Jackson Pearce hat mit "Drei Wünsche hast Du frei" ein tolles Debut abgeliefert, dass mich jetzt noch sprachlos zurücklässt. Die Geschichte ist magisch, einfühlsam, sensibel und mit einer guten Portion Sarkasmus gefüllt.
Hinzu kommen die sehr gut ausgearbeiteten Charaktere, die mich begeistern konnten. Wie nicht anders zu erwarten, sind Dschinn und Viola meine Lieblinge. Aber auch Lawrence ist ein toller Charakter, der sehr gut auf Viola eingeht.

Viola ist ein sehr intelligentes und ruhiges Mädchen, dass sich unsichtbar fühlt und nach der Trennung von Lawrence den Boden unter den Füßen verloren hat. An der Seite von Lawrence war sie ein Teil von jemanden, war dazugehörig, doch seitdem sich Lawrence getrennt und sich geoutet hat, ist nur noch er der Beliebte, was ihr wahnsinnig zu schaffen macht. Während sein Leben weitergeht, verkriecht sie sich immer mehr und wünscht sich, wieder vollständig zu sein.
Dschinn ist genial! Sarkastisch, ehrlich, intelligent und alles andere als ein Menschenfreund. Er hasst es, unter Menschen zu sein, weil er ihnen beim Altern zuschauen kann und selbst auch älter wird. In seiner Heimat Caliban kann er dagegen nicht altern und ist nahezu unsterblich. Seine Ansichten und seine Veränderungen gegenüber Viola haben mich begeistert und ich konnte ihn sehr schnell in mein Herz schließen.

Die Geschichte wird abwechselnd aus der Sicht von Viola und Dschinn aus der Ich-Perspekte erzählt. Beide lernt man dadurch sehr gut kennen und hat direkt einen Draht zu ihnen. Hierbei sind Dschinns Gedanken und Gefühle jedoch weitaus amüsanter.

Wenn man das deutsche Cover mit dem Original Cover vergleicht, so gewinnt hier ganz klar das deutsche Cover. Die zarten Blautöne wirken verträumt und Viola ist auf dem Cover sehr gut getroffen. Genau so habe ich sie mir vorstellt.
An jedem Kapitelanfang findet man eine Verschnörkelung und abwechsend die Namen "Viola" und "Dschinn" - je nachdem, aus welcher Sicht das jeweilige Kapitel erzählt ist. Auch die Kurzbeschreibung weiß zu überzeugen. Der Dialog zwischen den beiden passt perfekt und auch der Rest enthält das Wichtigste. Perfekt!

Insgesamt hat "Drei Wünsche hast Du frei" ein enormales Gefühlsfeuerwerk in mir geschaffen. Mit Dschinn konnte ich lachen, mit Viola konnte ich mitfühlen und musste mir sogar ein paar Tränchen wegblinzeln. Die Fantasyelemente sind perfekt unterbracht und bieten Unterhaltung pur! Absolut empfehlenswert!
