Mince pie wasn’t Lady Uppington’s usual scent, but one of her grandchildren had already contrived to mash one against her green velvet bodice. As Lady Uppington said, it was all part of the joy of the season, and she had carried blithely on, mince pie, grandchild, and all. She seemed to have deposited Peregrine somewhere, but she was still wearing the mince pie.

After falling in love with Amy Balcourt (in the Secret History of the Pink Carnation), Lord Richard Selwick was forced to give up his identity as the Purple Gentian and settle for life as a headmaster of a school for spies. Amy, wracked with guilt for her part in his unmasking and jealous over her cousin Jane’s continued involvement in the world of espionage as the Pink Carnation, is finding it hard to be “full of Christmas cheer.” Her depression deepens when Richard’s former flame, the newly wi...more

Are you a Lauren Willig fan? Need a Pink Carnation fix for the holidays beyond The Mischief of the Mistletoe? Check out Ivy and Intrigue: A Very Selwick Christmas, a short and sweet little novella (or perhaps really just a longish short story?) posted on Willig's website that offers a Christmas glimpse at the ones who started it all -- Amy and Richard (along with the modern-day Eloise and Colin). Originally serialized for posting, the story features events that would fall after The Masque of the...more
a larkish novella to tide you over until the next full book in the series! See my full review here
It took some time to get in to this story, as it assumes that you know/remember a lot from the other Pink Carnation books. There wasn't a lot of intrigue, but it was a fun read, once I did get in to the flow of the story. I understand that it is hard to get into character development in a short story, and the characters had already been developed in the novels. This is a perfect read for someone who has recently read the book of Pink Carnation series, but net even sure where it fits in. I love L...more
This was my second time reading this. It's a cute follow-up on the couple from the first pink carnation book. Definitely wouldn't make much sense to those who haven't read the series, but a cute, fun read for those who have.
Technical note: This novella is offered as a free read on the author's website. I used Calibre to convert those html to a .epub to read on my Nook. I think the only place to really read this is on the author's website - it was never offered for sale as far as I know.

This novella was everything I've come to expect from Lauren Willig. With many of my favourite characters, including the ever-present Eloise and her very own Selwick.
I would, of course, wish it had been longer and available in print. I don't fancy reading via websites and blogs. It would have been a great deal better if she had added this to the end of the appropriate book, or even published on it's own - tiny as it is.

This was a wonderful little story that featured Amy and Richard from the first book in the series. It also gives the reader some info that readers might have been wondering about if they've read the whole series up to this point (I know we mentioned it in our buddy read discussion of the book before this). This also gave us a little peak at Eloise and Colin...and made me wonder if he's not in the family business :)
I miss Amy and Richard from the first in the series! Amy, especially, with her spunk and horrible spy skills. I want a book devoted to their efforts at the spy school!!
In this ebook, Amy and Richard are at Uppington Hall for the holidays and find that Richard's ex, Deidre, has been invited. Add a splash of Pink Carnation (oh, yeah. I miss Miss Gwen too.) and a bit of French devilry...just fun.

This was just the perfect short story to tide me over until I can get my hands on more of Lauren Willig's work. The whole series is a guilty pleasure of sorts for me (spies, regency-era, romance, humour... oh my!), and Ivy and Intrigue didn't disappoint. Chronilogically the story takes place sometime after The Masque of the Black Tulip, but probably not before The Deception of the Emerald Ring. This one is sure to please avid fans of the series!
So sweet and adorable! Really enjoyed this. Richard and Amy only pop up in the very first book and then are kind of just very rare secondary characters in the other books, so it was nice to have a whole Christmas mini-speical with just them. I also loved this little story because it filled in some missing gaps about Richard's ex-girlfriend. A nice little read.
I think I would have enjoyed this little novella more if I hadn't read the original Pink Carnation book so long ago. Amy and Richard are blurred memories, and so jumping back into their story here didn't work as well for me. Still, I always enjoy Lauren Willig's tongue-in-cheek writing and the witty banter between her characters.
A quick Yuletide visit to world of spies that began with the Pink Carnation. My only complaint is that is was over too soon. I love to immerse myself in the intrique surrounding the characters I have come to love, as well as millions of Lauren Willig's fans. Thank you for the perfect Christmas present that you have given us. . .
Short stories like this are generally not my favorite, but I do enjoy the author's writing style. Unforunately the copy I purchased was missing the center page, but then I discovered is is published on the author's website. A little disappointed that I paid money for it, but still an enjoyable distraction.
Some novellas are just baby novels, and some are outsized short stories. Unfortunately this was one of the latter, and so my expectations were a mismatch for what this actually was -- a short, mostly-fluffy story which had a lot less actual plot or emotional torque than the summary made it sound. Strictly for fans only, and even then it didn't add much to the story of the Purple Gentian and his wife.
If you need a Pink Carnation fix prior tot he release of her new book check out Ivy and Intrigue: A Very Selwick Christmas. This is a short and sweet little novella that follows the story of Amy and Richard, the couple from the first pink carnation book. That said, it definitely wouldn't make much sense to those who haven't read the series, or at least the first book, but a cute, fun read for those who have. That said, this story has been posted on Willig's website a free read, however, if you a...more
