I enjoyed this fun fable, which flips between 2007 and 1927. Russell does a good job of building a believable adventure through his storyline (a wager with the price of never staying in one place for more than twelve days or terrible things would happen to you), imagery, and tone.

The author sent me this book, and I enjoyed reading it.
This one took me by surprise; it built so quietly that I didn't realize until the end just how much I had invested in it. The climax caught me offguard with just how much emotion it wrung from me.

My only complaint would be that I found a few grammatical quibbles, here and there, but on the whole this book is highly recommended.

Aurora nominee. I love the concept: Rembrandt and his uncles seek a champion to beat the devil, save their aunts souls (and their own) while only allowed to stay in one place for twelve days at a stretch. A fast-read. I wasn't quite sure about the YA designation--one of the plotlines features Rembrandt as a 90 year-old man.
It's been a long time since I read a book that could pull off a meeting with the Devil. Beautifully written and exciting all the way through. I'm not sure I was convinced by the end but it didn't ruin the pleasure of the book as a whole.
