I have no idea what other book I could compare with Will Grayson, Will Grayson. For some reason, I got a very strong sci-fi vibe from the synopsis of this book. The cover itself just screams alternate universes. But nothing like that was involved. It was just two guys in the same ol' regular universe who meet under unusual circumstances. No speculative elements involved. But I still loved it!! Imagine that.

This book is one that I'm having a hard time rating. It's nothing to do with the fact that the book is written by two authors and I would split up the writing or anything like that. I found that their writing blended well together, and although I found one Will more fun to read about than another I don't think it had to do with the writing really. I found that their writing blended well together, and although I found one Will more fun to read about than another I don't think it had to do with the writing really. I've read many other reviews where people liked the other Will more so that doesn't really matter. It's just that although this book has the usual humor I have come to expect from John's books there was not much more than that to love about this book.

Two boys named Will Grayson are both living in Chicago. At the start of the story they have no idea the other exists, but their paths are soon to cross. Will 1 is a straight teen with a very large gay best friend. This character is John Green's go-to guy. I've read about this same exact character now in three other John Green's books and that's why I didn't find this Will to be the most exciting or fresh character to read about. Will number 2 was written by David Levithan and he was a gay teen who is seemingly depressed, but becomes very hopeful when he finds out he's going to be able to meet his internet love, Isaac.

I didn't really like any of the other characters. I guess if I had to pick any that were okay I would say Jane, but the rest were just annoying.

The plot didn't have anything exciting happen, and I didn't get all emotional like I have when reading other John Green books. This book will probably be very unmemorable to be honest, but I thought it was an alright quick read. The book was seriously predictable, though. I mean pretty much from the start you can tell a few things are going to happen, but on the chance that someone didn't see them coming I will hide them.

And then we get to the ending. I almost didn't get to the ending after Tatiana here on GR warned that it was very "Glee"...So yeah. The musical. Wow. She was right. Very Glee or High School Musical. Over the top and unrealistic. I actually really like Glee, but it's fun on TV, not books. I'm sure there are some who may really like this book, but for me it was just okay.

So yeah. This concludes my John Green reading for now. I wanted to read all of his books, and this was the final one for me. This experience has been all over the place.

As far as Will Grayson, Will Grayson goes I would say it's much better than An Abundance of Katherines, but not as good as some others. This may just be because it's the last of his I'm reading and all of the similar main characters and road trips are leaving me feel like I need a change.(less)

I am glad David Levithan joined John Green to create this story, because clearly Green is unable to write any other characters different from what he had already offered in Looking for Alaska, Paper Towns and An Abundance of Katherines. His Will Grayson is the same old nerdy, too eloquent boy who is into a smart, attractive, and slightly pretentious girl. Green simply cannot move on to any other ensemble.

More often than not, I have a tepid relationship with the books I read. I’m not really into them, and they’re not really into me. But we let the relationship play out just to see where it goes. This often ends with me bitching about them on the Internet.

Then I search through the crowd that is my bookshelf and try to lock eyes with the one who has been staring me down, watching me go through the motions of a going-nowhere read. When I finally spot that coy smile, I sprint toward it. No doubt the title in question can see my desperation, but that doesn’t matter. What I’m feeling is pure honesty. I’m excited.

As you might have surmised from the first four words of this review, it doesn’t always work out. Sometimes the new book is worse than the one that preceded it. That hurts. It makes you start to doubt your ability to choose for yourself. It becomes clear that you have no taste. Why are the good ones always taken?

This line of thinking always makes me question my motivation. Why do I do it? Why do I still count reading among my favorite activities? I have been accused, on more than one occasion, of hating books. And, to a point, it’s true; I hate books. But I love reading.

Tiny Cooper would get this, though it would leave the Will Graysons in the audience scratching their heads until the final act. It’s all about the fall, not the landing. The experience makes it worth it. For many of the same reasons you probably hate your high school boyfriend, I hate Ulysses. It was inconsiderate, self-involved, and, well, ugly. But there’s always the next one, which is why you’re still looking for (or married to) that guy. Unfortunately, there’s no real way to marry a book. The relationship is limited to a finite number of pages. It has to end. What’s left is the question of how. Will the ending be angry, forgettable, or bittersweet?

Will Grayson, Will Grayson and I ended our relationship with a pinky swear that we’d never forget one another. My heart felt heavy when I closed the book for the last time, but I was so glad to have known it. It was one of those stories you want to keep all for yourself- not the kind of thing you want to read about on the Internet from the next ex down the line. If I could take this book out of print and wipe it from the memory of everyone who’d ever read it, I would.

I’m relying on the literal interpretation of the GoodReads rating system here. This book gets five stars because I loved it, even if it was just for a single weekend in December. It has its flaws. There are pacing issues throughout, the other will grayson didn’t always have believable thought processes, and, while most of the relationships were thoroughly explored, some (like the one between Maura and o.w.g.) were left sadly neglected.

But that doesn’t matter. Books, like people, are flawed. And, sometimes, the ones with the most flaws end up being the best. (less)

Okay, how do I explain this book without mucking it up? Here is my attempt: Truly a honest and thought-provoking portrayal of two very confused and angsty teenage boys, both named Will Grayson who are just trying to figure out who they are and ultimately crossing paths in the least likely of scenarios. I started laughing from the first page and continued to laugh out loud throughout the story, but not without its occasional but constant tangents of sad and revealing moments and ultimate heart changing conclusion. This book covered the gamut of teenage struggles, including homosexuality, depression, love, loss, true friendship and painful self-revelation.

The first Will Grayson, who I will refer to as WG#1, was my favorite as he’s the hilarious, self deprecating typical of John Green’s likeable characters. His motto in life is don't care… and shut up. But that can only last for so long. His best friend, Tiny Cooper, is a 300+ pound, gay guy who is constantly challenging WG#1’s feelings and adding a fair share of struggle into his life. WG#1 has some very revealing moments that come across as valuable lessons, some of them profound and others... well kind of gross actually. My favorites were You like someone who can't like you back because unrequited love can be survived in a way that once requited love cannot. and You can pick your friends, and you can pick your nose, but you can‘t pick your friend‘s nose. *LMAO and cringing at the same time* I loved his ten minute game of just the truth. Overall, his observations were hilarious and intriguing. In my opinion, he could do, say or feel nothing wrong, I just down right fell for this character.

Now WG#2, I struggled with him a bit. I couldn't really relate to this character... well for obvious reasons, primarily him being a snarky, twisted teenage boy, but at minimum I was hoping to develop some level of compassion for him. That took some time for me, but ultimately it did occur; the first of which came when he met Tiny and his internal self-revelation helped me understand his dark side. His humor was completely different from WG#1 as it was harsh, destructive, negative and sometimes just down right cruel. WG#2 has his fair share of life lessons that I felt were... well let’s just call them interesting, such as The things you hope for the most are the things that destroy you in the end. and his bird shite rule was kind of harsh, but funny. Overall, his moment of self-revelation was his turning point for me as he shared his hurt about his dad, depression, money struggles, and homosexuality. It was sad to see that all this guy ever wanted in life was a simple break, so you ultimately hope he gets one.

Okay lastly, why did I remove one a star? Two words... Tiny Dancer... Errrrr... Tiny Cooper.. okay that's four words and an unintelligible sound, but anywho... I could NOT stand him or his project/musical and his songs to me were crude. Tiny was selfish, self absorbed, exasperating and downright annoying. Despite his squealing to WG#1 that everything he did was for others, I did not buy it for one minute. Everything he did and said was to benefit him and his interests. How WG#1 remained friends with him simply baffled me. So minus one for a poorly developed character. But other than that perfect!

Overall, great story with some intriguing characters and thought-provoking material. The writing might be offensive at times and the foul language could come across as harsh, but it was truly well done. Hats off to John Green and David Levithan for this brilliant piece of work.(less)

1) I felt very connected to WG2 right off the bat, i liked his internet connection with isaac and the way he felt when he talked to him (or i should say her considering it was really Maura all along) I guess because I've been there, and have felt depressed and have felt like you don't deserve anything and I have literally said the things he says to Tiny to some people in my life... It was actually quite strange to read. I feel like David really captured something real. I was right there with him the whole time, regardless of whether I agreed or not. As much as when he broke up with Tiny I was internally screaming at him to stop it, move, run after him, tell him you care! it didn't matter, because I understood why he didn't do any of that... I've been in positions that I have yelled at myself to do thing, knowing i should, but just couldn't bring myself to because I felt so depressed. It happens, and I think it is so true and so real that it truly moved me.

2) I liked Tiny, as opposed to all the people here that say he ruined it. I didn't mind him. Actually, he reminded me a lot of someone I know/knew in high school. He too was gay and in drama and he too directed/produced/starred in his own musical! how crazy is that? He wasn't overweight, and he wasn't sensitive, in fact, he was kind of a jerk. Now Tiny on the other hand, picked up the pieces where my.. acquaintance... literally dropped the ball. I feel like even though he was this flamboyant, bigger-than-life, over-the-top character, he was humanized. He had his faults, and I don't think he was pompous, in fact, my favourite part of this whole book may have been when he went over to talk to Maura for Will... when he thanked her for bringing them together. I felt like that is something I would have done regardless of Will dragging me the other way. I felt that it was very real and very raw, just pure emotion, like he didn't think it through but didn't need or want to- he just wanted to do it (which is what I do sometimes too, and I think what everyone does sometimes....)

Anyways, that's my rant... I really liked this book and I don't really have anything negative to say about it, except maybe it didn't make me think as much as some of John's other work. Even Looking For Alaska made me think a lot more, and when I was finished with it I began looking for my Great Perhaps. With WGWG I just feel satisfied and kind of emotional, which is really not a bad thing to feel after finishing a book. I think I agree when you said you're not sure how to feel. I laughed, I frowned, I smiled, and I felt a lot while reading, and I guess now I just feel satisfied, like the story has ended, there is closure, and I feel good about it.

I hope some of that made some sense lol(less)

Remarkable for its polished wit and intense compassion, this is a story about three things: honesty, bravery, and Tiny Cooper.

Mostly Tiny Cooper, though. He's the comma between the dumbass Graysons, you see.

Will Grayson x2 (I'm not gonna write it twice every time, just work with me) is about two kids named...you know... and although they have never met, their paths cross and ultimately have their lives changed. The book alternates each character's POV, one being written by John Green and the other by David Levithan. Spoooooiler Alert!

I think one of my biggest disappointments, which might be my own fault for having unrealistic expectations, is that I expected a much more dramatic change in the lives of these two teens. After they meet, Levithan's Will certainly has a change, simply because he meets Tiny. But for the other Will, I felt I was left scratching my head on how he was really affected. I know things got rough with Tiny, but I feel that was going to happen with Tiny's play happening anyway.

John Green's Will Grayson, which I will simply call Will for this review, is classic Green. He is nerdy and hilarious, giving me several moments of actual out-loud laughter. And also like classic Green, he falls for the first female character introduced, despite the fact they do not share any notion of chemistry or attraction. What made Looking for Alaska and Paper Towns so great was the mystery behind it all. The deep psychological and emotional questions needed to be answered. Will and Jane's romance just felt....dull. The whole dead cat in the box thing was a nice try, but in the end their romance just felt set up and obvious.

Levithan's Will Grayson, which we'll call Grayson, is a very different beast than Will. This is the second book I've read by Levithan, the other being Nick and Norah. Both these left me with this uneasy feeling in my stomach and it took me awhile to figure it out, but I think I got it. Levithan is a great YA author because his characters are brutally authentic, which is very impressive. When you read his words, there is never a second where you would debate whether a moody teen wrote this. But that authenticity is a double-edged sword, especially when you are not a moody teenage reader. I hated Grayson the first few chapters just because he was such a asshole teenager. I totally remember being like that! I don't want to relive it. While Green expresses those frustrating teen times under the shroud of humor, Leviathan is just too hardcore for me. It's all bitching all the time. Grayson lightens up after awhile, but he just left a bad taste in my mouth.

If I had to sum it up, reading Levithan (for me personally!!) is like reading a vivid depiction of a car wreck that's so well done it makes you imagine what it would be like to be in one. It's downright impressive, but why would you want to relive that?

Aside from my beefs with the characters, they are both ultimately decent enough and would have earned this book more than two stars. The big problem I had with this book can be narrowed down to one word: Tiny. Oh Tiny, Tiny, Tiny. You destroyed this book for me.

While the book is titled Will Grayson x2, it should have been "Let's All Have A Lovefest for Tiny." He is the central character in the book and, for the life of me, I cannot understand why everybody loves this guy. He is completely self-centered and egotistical, time and time again putting his needs instead of Will's, and Will just takes it, gets pissed off about it for a bit, but then just goes crawling back and loves it. Tiny's romance with Grayson just didn't make sense as well. Would an overly outgoing theater performer fall for a dark moody goth kid in one night?

Tiny's environment, especially for a book that was so full of realistic teen drama, seemed like a fairy tale. When Grayson comes out of the closet and announces he's gay, he is met with the few typical close minded reactions where people stare at him in the hallways, leave him nasty notes in his locker, etc. It's a shame, but I'm sure that is really what gay teens have to go through when coming out. Tiny somehow is able to transcend this level of homophobia, prances through the hallways singing and dancing, and even goes as far as to putting on an entire play about his own lifestyle(I know he said the play is about love, but its not. Sorry) and the entire school loves him for it? How did that happen? Where is this high school full of tolerance?

The ending was especially disappointing where our two Will Graysons and everybody named remotely something similar meet up at the Tiny crossroads, only to feel the need to loudly proclaim that they "appreciate you, Tiny Cooper!" as the entire crowd sobs in an overly emotional manner having their minds exploded over the masterpiece that his play, "Tiny Dancer," is. Really? Watching 3 hours of a gay teen circumvent any backlash for his sexuality and ponder why he is such a man-whore who dated 18 boys in a few years was that impressive?

I think this is a book that will certainly be enjoyed by actual teens rather than adults who are fans of the YA genre, for the most part. The copy I have is an advanced reader's edition, so it isn't actually out yet. I'm very curious to see how well this book sells since alot of it is centered around...gayness, not that there is anything wrong with that. But as a teacher who has worked in high schools and middle schools, its a sad fact that I see alot of kids still think being gay is something weird and synonymous with lame. On top of that, so many are reluctant readers that struggle just to sit and read, regardless of how interesting the book is. I can't imagine trying to convince my kids to read a book about one kid with a gay best friend and another pursuing a gay relationship and getting a warm reception. Hopefully I'm wrong and this book isn't hampered by that, but its just food for thought.

I really liked the idea of this book, having two authors create a character each and alternate their points of view throughout the novel. For me it was an entirely different kind of experience and the two authors have such unique styles that I would say it is definitely something everyone should read. It's a story about two teenage boys, both of which are called Will Grayson. They could hardly be more different, there lives have almost nothing in common... until one night when circumstances lead to them meeting by accident (in a porn shop). It's funny and it's ridiculous.

So why the average rating?

Well, because I couldn't get interested in John Green's character at all I'm afraid. This is my first experience of his writing and I know him to be a very highly rated and acclaimed author, one whose books have tempted me numerous times at my local library but I've never got around to reading. If this is any indication, I'm not sure his novels would be for me. I found his Will Grayson boring and a character who quickly became secondary to more interesting personalities like Tiny. I'm also yet to find a young adult novel that does the beauty and the geek story well. Will Grayson is an awkward, nerdy guy who can't believe the smart and beautiful Jane would fall for him. And neither can I, I'm sorry.

That being said, David Levithan's character rocked. He's an angsty "I hate the world" type of guy and it's just effin' hilarious. One of my favourite parts is the part near the beginning where he's having a rant about people using things like "lol" on the internet:

"or ttyl. bitch, you're not actually talking. that would require actual vocal contact. or <3. you think that looks like a heart? if you do, that's only because you've never seen a scrotum.

rofl! what? are you really rolling on the floor laughing? well, please stay down there a sec while I KICK YOUR ASS"

I really really liked Levithan's humour. In fact, I just really like him as an author, I'm yet to be disappointed by his writing. Perhaps I would have liked Green's character better if I didn't have this to compare it to but Green's Will Grayson just pales in comparison.

Some people didn't like the musical at the end but I thought it was pretty funny. I've known a few versions of Tiny in real life - big personality, outrageously shameless - and his character repeatedly made me smile (credit to John Green there). On the whole, the novel was a pleasure to read: very entertaining, very gay (no offense intended in any way - read the novel and see what I mean) and very different.

This book has been sitting on my shelf forever.... almost year actually, since I had gotten an arc several months before the release. I'm not sure why it sat there for so long. I think it was just one of those times when there are just too many good books to read. But after I read Love is the Higher Law.... I didn't start early. Much. It was close to six in the morning on Jan. 1st. And then I fell asleep.

I love both WG and wg. I find something of myself in both of them.

But I'm not feeling the Tiny love. Nah. He's too full of himself, too over the top. They might all be, but it's in him that it irritated...more

So, this is one of those books where I won’t read the lower rated reviews, which I almost always do either before or after reading a book. The reason I won’t for this book is because it touched something so deeply personal that I think I might feel like I’m reading about someone that doesn’t understand me.

I’ll never review this book as well as it could be, but read the sample and if it doesn’t immediately draw you in, you might never ever relate to it. If you do enjoy it, it only gets better and...more So, this is one of those books where I won’t read the lower rated reviews, which I almost always do either before or after reading a book. The one criticism I might make about this book is I don’t know how YA it truly is. Of course, maybe I’ve just never truly grown up. All I know is I don’t think at 16 I would have nearly appreciated this book for what it is, but at 30, the characters and the insight spoke to me in volumes. I was and am some of these kids – if not all of them at different times.

Some might say it’s depressing and that’s very true. But, depression is real and as a teenager (and adult) you don’t always think things are going to get better. You can be cynical and feel drawn to other cynical people. You sometimes think those that are always THEM aka the 'others' aren’t really how people are. As Will would say, that statement is both true and not true. But for as depressing as it might be, my fuck, I laughed my ass off the majority of it. Of course, there were a few ugly-face-cry moments thrown in as well.

Characters like Tiny Cooper break up both Wills’ inner dialogue and he’s not there just as a ploy to bring happiness. He’s a real breathing character that exists – as they all do vividly – and he shows the reader that sometimes you can take a break and realize that people are different, and no one is perfect, but difference in all shapes and sizes, genders, personalities, etc can intersect and add something to your life. Sometimes you feel like you are alone and no one gets you. You keep your head down and you are an introvert going through life with a hilarious inner dialogue commenting on things you are desperate to release but sometimes feel no one will get.

That when you least expect it, sometimes all you have to do is breathe and reach out to someone unexpected that might understand you. They don’t have to get all of you. No one probably truly ever will. But, someone will get some part of you and some special moments can happen.

Loved it. Adored it. This book has its stars in Tiny, Will, Will, Jane, Gideon, Nick, Gary, but what it really does is tell the reader that things are both right and not right all the time, but you can get through it.

This was a really great read. I have been so caught up in paranormal YA recently that I'd lost sight of just how much I love contemporary fiction; it's just so relateable.

It was a story about falling. In love. Into place. A love story without being a romance.

It had its silly moments and there were times when I wanted to smack Tiny Cooper upside the head--I never truly saw him as a three dimensional character, and though the authors wanted him to come across as almost childishly sincere, I mostly saw him as a bit of a disingenuous caricature rather than a fully developed character. I think they could have done a lot more with him. They hinted at his barely there parents, binge drinking and reading between the lines, the psychology behind his serial dating, but never fully developed his story. Which was a shame, because instead of someone who got knocked around a bit but chooses to be a (very annoying) optimist, we got a self-centered egomaniac who maybe told himself he just wanted to brigthen everyone's day, but really just wanted attention.

That being said, however ridiculous and over the top the ending was in hindsight (they got so much of the teenage emotional spectrum right, why ruin it by culminating in what amounted to the scene in all teen movies where suddenly everyone at prom is dancing in perfect choreography to the latest pop song that summarizes the character's deepest feelings perfectly--not that it wasn't fun and evocative to read on some levels, but... just... why?), I was caught up in it as I read. I loved that he was the catalyst for everyone around him. That his presence--or the lack thereof--changed the way people saw themselves, made the daunting task of identity just a little bit easier as they saw themselves through the lens of Tiny Cooper. Or maybe the voice.

On a nerdier level, the repeated references to Schrodinger's cat, Neutral Milk Hotel and All Dogs Go to Heaven made my heart go pitter pat. (as did the fact that will grayson's--the other will grayson, not o.w.g.--chapters were entirely in lower case, as when i am not trying to be a super srs bsns book reviewer with deep thoughts and weighty opinions, i am too lazy for the shift button as well.)

3.5 stars for a book that made me laugh, roll my eyes, catch my breath and smile a little shakily at the end. (less)

That's the fastest I've finished a book in a long while.

I loved both Will Graysons. But as I was reading it, I couldn't help but be more anxious to read will's chapters instead of Will's (notice the difference in capitalization of the W) simply because I relate to will so much. He reminds me of, well, me. The things he felt were things that I'd felt once too.

Will was also an awesome character, even though I couldn't exactly relate to him much. And Tiny Cooper... God, I loved Tiny.

the feeling you get when you realize you've just wasted time and energy you could've spent reading one of infinitely many worthwhile books on something that has left you no richer for the wear is absolutely crushing. i read it over two days, first in the evening before picking it up again in the morning. when i fisnished, i threw it across the room and went back to sleep.

This book is awesome. It's better than a season of Glee. I love the feeling and the humor and the teenage diction (henceforth, multivalent, fuck), but I am a little confused about the time period. Eleventh graders in 2010 referencing Neutral Milk Hotel and The Dead Milkmen? I didn't know anyone remembered Mr. T Experience except girls who dated them in high school and those girls' friends.

The only way to differentiate whose story is in play is to look at the capitalization. If everything is formatted correctly, you have "straight" WG. If everything is formatted incorrectly (in lower case letters), you are reading about "gay" WG.

I've dipped into John Green before (Looking For Alaska and The Fault in Our Stars), and I really love his writing style. I can completely see why some would say it's a bit pretentious, but I love that. I love the deep thoughts, and big words. I love the sharp wit and the self-deprecating that usually goes on. Weird, I said I loved the self-deprecating... that doesn't sound good. But the thing is, it IS good. He writes these characters that are down on themselves in such a way that it reminds you of yourself, or my teen self I should say. So anyway, I wasn't surprised that I loved Will Grayson, of the odd chapters. However, this was the very first David Levithan that I've ever read. And it definitely made me want to read more! will grayson, of the even chapters, was so dark and deep and... angry and sad. AND FUNNY! The whole lol, ttyl, <3, rotfl bit had me cracking up. And I loved how things didn't end up perfect for both Will and will, but you still had that sense of growth and hope.

Honestly, I was going to go into this review with either the intention of NOT talking about Tiny Cooper, or only mentioning that I thought he was usually a dick. Except, something happened towards the end of the book, and especially AT the end when (view spoiler). And I realized that friends are sometimes nothing but big dicks. I think we can all say that there have been times when you've been a complete ass wipe to your best friend. And you can admit that they've been a big ass wipe to you. And that it doesn't matter because you just love them anyway, no matter what. That is beautiful. So anyway, in the end I loved Tiny Cooper. And I especially loved Tiny Cooper and Capital W-ill's friendship.

You know what else I loved about this book? I loved how in the end we got the conversation with Green and Levithan on how the book was born. I knew that Green wrote Odd Will and Levithan wrote Even Will, because my wonderful GR friends told me. But I had no idea that they wrote their initial chapters without conversation, just writing the chapter and then showing each other and seeing where it went. This sense of free writing, of letting the story grow, has always been what I defined a good storyteller by. And, how about this one... Tiny didn't exist for Levithan until he read Green's chapter. He was totally and completely Green's creation. And yet, he ended up playing such an amazing part of the story. Man, I wish I had that talent.

I'm rambling, I'm sorry. Books like this really inspire me. So yeah, I liked it. Somewhere between a 4 and a 4.5... (only cause I didn't cry.)(less)

And while I liked Tiny and especially Gideon, I was sad to find I really didn't like anyone else. Ultimately, the premise (two Will Graysons) was misleading because they didn't have an impact on each other.

The crux of the story was really about (non-capitalized) Will Grayson and how larger-than-life Tiny inspires him. This left (capitalized) Will Grayson's arc of deciding to...more This was just okay for me. It had its strengths -- bold subject matter being one, the energized Chicago setting, another. And while I liked Tiny and especially Gideon, I was sad to find I really didn't like anyone else. Ultimately, the premise (two Will Graysons) was misleading because they didn't have an impact on each other.

The crux of the story was really about (non-capitalized) Will Grayson and how larger-than-life Tiny inspires him. This left (capitalized) Will Grayson's arc of deciding to like Jane or not as filler, mostly. The set-up of Jane's tom-boy status (sans any desirable qualities shown) seemed too heavily borrowed from "Let it Snow," where the nerd boy was deciding if he should like Duke. Since I didn't understand why Jane was such a catch, I almost didn't care if Will Grayson ended up with her.

And this wasn't a huge issue, but the parents and staff in a public Chicago area high school supporting a "gay play" readily, and without discussion, seemed a bit of a stretch. A private, progressive school, maybe. A public school? I'm not so sure.

Other than that, two smaller things made this book not as successful as I'd hoped:

One, a lot of the dialogue sounds like people trying to be funny, but they aren't. Ex: (pg. 50) "They're kind of a poor man's Mr. T experience... it basically explains Einstein's theory of relativity." That one line alone isn't that bad, but when you combine it with hundreds of other lines just like it -- that make no sense -- it takes away from what's really going on in a scene or chapter. After a while, I started to think John Mayer had stolen the book and pasted his eye-rolling Aren't-I-Funny-and-Insightful twitter comments into it.

And two, if you have a gay, fat best-friend you wouldn't constantly refer to him as your GAY!! FAT!! Best-friend. You just wouldn't. He'd be your friend, and that's all. So for (capitalized) Will Grayson to constantly make GAY, FAT, observations was insulting. Yes, we know Tiny is big, but by the same token, if you had a friend who wasn't as smart as you, you wouldn't refer to him as your STUPID friend, would you? Maybe you would if you were in this book, I don't know.

Most of what I feel is wrong with the book can, in fact, be attributed to the hazards of co-authoring -- one author naturally has to take a backseat to the other, and in this case, one whole plot had to cow to the other, flashier one. (less)

Will Grayson no 1. I kind of like the way he stands on his grounds and principles, throughout the book he seems level-headed towards whoever he meets, girl,boy, lesbian or gay or even from the Tiny means small and Tiny means Big. And since he has his own rules in his life, it's quiet funny that, they are seem applicable to every situations that he's in. And this is the kind of character I want, no matter how much the readers want them to turn out like this, they will stay the same person as who they are from the start to the last, so John Green-ish. But I find it quiet boring also, especially when a book exudes Romance,but on the latter part, Readers will find this Will grayson no. 1 a romantic guy, a very friendly person, that's why I think romance comes on the second. This book will again makes us realized how important friendship is, no matter how flawed or impeccable our friends are, at the end they are still the one we can lean onto.

Will Grayson no 2. A freaked out character! Seriously I love him, because as a reader we have the tendency to relate ourselves into the characters that are inhabiting the books we're reading, I'm not saying that I'm gay, it's just that we all kind of fall on to that category where we see something on the internet and we actually believe in it. And this Grayson no 2 is the twist for me, It was actually my 2nd time to read a novel that has gay character in it, so it was still a new environment to me. On his part it was freaking hilarious seriously, If I were the one on that situation he was in, I would've killed that bitch, her name is Maura in this book. As though forgiveness never exists.

So as a whole, the story was genuine, full of humor and you can actually sing at the top of your lungs while reading this, because it has a musical part in it. So down to the last character, Tiny Cooper, which is actually the burden of this review, the only thing I can complain of about this book, is story freaking revolve to an irony. Well you have to read this to know what I mean, I'm trying to make this review a spoiler-free one but pardon me, this is not some kind of perks of being a wallflower, I mean this book tells stories of different people with the same name and different gender but I don't understand why I feel like the whole time I was reading the book, I thought it was Will Grayson,Will Grayson but it turned out to be Tiny Cooper,Tiny Cooper. Well don't judge me for being shallow that I don't see the other way around, but that's what I felt about this book. But still thumbs up to John Green and David Levithan, because this is genius and original! :)(less)

This is my second David Levithan book — the first being his collaborative book with Rachel Cohn, Dash & Lily’s Book of Dares — and now I want to read everything he’s written.

I had come across Will Grayson, Will Grayson one day when I was at the bookstore. I was going to buy it, but already had an armful of books to buy, so I put it back. In a way, I’m happy that I did because when I was browsing Audible one day, I saw that it was on sale for $4.95 and not that long of an audiobook (just under 8 hours), so I bought it. The instant I started listening to it, I couldn’t believe that I hadn’t listened to it before.

First of all, I had no idea what to expect from this novel, but when I see the names “John Green” and “David Levithan” on a book, I know it’s going to be good and that I don’t need to know anything about it. I just need to read it (or listen to it) and then I’ll fall in love. The odd thing about this book is that I found myself laughing out loud not just because it was hilarious, but also because it was so crass and so unlike the YA books I assume that young adults read.

Call me an ignorant 30-some-year-old, but it seems that young adults are reading crazier books than I ever read when I was a young adult. I don’t really remember reading books that contained swear words or dealt with homosexuality. And it’s so brilliantly done! I fell in love with ALL of the characters — it was hard not to — even the slightly angsty Will Grayson (who sounds like someone from a Quentin Tarantino movie). I especially loved Tiny Cooper and his big personality, who — from the first instant I heard him talking — reminded me so much of Cameron from Modern Family.

And while I’m on the issues of characters, I have to admit that it’s pretty awesome to see the parents actually visible in a novel for once. Normally, it seems like the kids are running around doing their thing and the parents are never referenced. I loved the relationship between Will Grayson and his mom. It was amazing to see how much she cared.

This book was absolutely hilarious, with its smart dialogue and laugh-out-loud rants. It’s one of those audiobooks that made me want to find anything to do as I was listening to it that dinner got made, the house got cleaned, I went for a walk, and still I was trying to find anything to do just so I could keep listening. And yet, while it’s hilarious, it’s also quite a serious novel and I admit that I teared up on a few occasions (doesn’t that usually happen in John Green novels?).

John Green and David Levithan sure know how to write real life issues that readers can relate to. It’s hard not to fall in love with the characters, no matter how crass they can be. I do suggest that if you want to read this novel, you give the audiobook a chance. The narration is fantastic and really adds to the story. Or, if you read the book, download the audio to read along. I guarantee it’ll be worth it!

My only experience with Dan Levithan was less positive, I didn't care about Dash and Lily but I really do like depressed Will Grayson. i make a mental note to buy her coffee or something, but my mental noteboard is a joke, because as soon as i put something on there it disappears. and she launches right behind me, saying all the things that would be in a hallmark card if hallmark made cards for people who invented internet boyfriends for other people and then were suddenly caught in the lie. and the last one i took my pills this morning, i swear. but it's like they ended up in my leg instead of my brain, because i just can't get happy. He's depressed, confused, self-effacing, and sweet. Back to Dan Levithan. I felt like he got it just right when he was describing Will Grayson's mood and feelings about Tiny. Perfect teen angst.

You do have to be willing to let some things go. I'm pretty sure the high school would not allow Tiny to put on a show without any faculty supervision. Or when he just showed up at Will Grayson's high school and ate in the cafeteria, like it was nothing. I'd like to think that couldn't happen nowadays. So I let it slide because that's the kind of person I am. Okay, it's not the kind of person I am, but I decided to enjoy the book and not nitpick. Except for this one thing: the word "andbutso". Really hate it. JG also uses the variation "sobutand". There might be a "butsoand" in there butifso (ha!) I didn't catch it. So wrong. (less)
