Anne of Green Gables by L M Montgomery is the first in the Avonlea series. Written in the early twentieth century, it offers a unique look at that time period in rural Canada. Anne is an orphan sent to live with a brother and sister couple, Aunt Marilla and Uncle Matthew. I love Anne of Green Gables, it's really delightful, wholesome, and I love the language. But this version is really amazing because the columns are lined with notes explaining the history of P.E.I, similarities to L.M. Montgomery's life, as well as defining the colloquial phrases and words. It has great pictures of Prince Edward Island, a biography of the author and quotes from her journals about how she was inspired to write this novel, poems / recitation peices that are refered to in the boo...more

I love the book (it's probably THE defining book of my childhood), so I was excited when I first heard about the annotated version. It's okay, but not wonderful. Nearly all of the annotations identify quotes or plants - neither of which held much interest with me, and (as far as my reading goes) neither of which affected the text very much. Also, it was awkwardly formatted - footnotes would begin at the very bottom of the page they referenced, with most of it carrying over to the next page, a...more
