Considering this is one of my top preferred PNR series, that Cat and Bones are my favorite kick-ass romance couple, that Bones is my #1 all-time beloved bad boy vampire hero, and that I LOVED the previous three books, especially my favorite One Foot in the Grave; my expectations for Destined for an Early Grave were incredibly high. I feel like this book didn't quite have the same magic to me as the first three. However, I liked the first three a lot more after reading them a second time so I might feel different about this one too if I read it again.
On the bad side, Bones and Cat fight a lot in this book. Maybe it's just me, but it felt really off. They butt heads and had a few fights in the first three books but not on the same level as this book. I think it's more that instead of their fights escalating throughout the bo...more

When I had finished At Grave’s End, the third book in Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress series, I was on the fence whether I wanted to go ahead and read Destined For An Early Grave. If you read my review for At Grave’s End, you know I was less than pleased. I was upset with my reaction because Cat and Bones are one of my favorite literary duos from this decade. And to think that I could turn my back on them because one book in a series I loved failed to deliver. It may be silly and pathetic to som...more
A different vibe for this series, but it totally worked for me! I loved it!
Destined for an Early Grave took a (slight) step away from action packed fight scenes galore and a step toward dealing with some much deeper issues. The book starts off with Cat and Bones getting some much needed R&R. Trouble soon presents itself when Master vampire, Gregor aka "the Dreamsnatcher" starts inhabiting Cat's dreams and threatens to literally snatch her from Bones. (view spoiler)...more

Outstanding! The fourth book in the Night Huntress series and I was riveted to the pages. Like the previous books in this series, the main characters are Cat and Bones. This time they have to work on the multitude of issues the author mentions in the earlier books.
Destined for an Early Grave was a nice change of pace from the previous in the series. Since Cat no longer hunted bad vampires for the government, the book went in a different direction and introduced a new bad guy. Gregor. How Gregor...more

I'm not entirely sure why I read this entire series. Certainly the writing sometimes left something to be desired and eventually the plot became so ridiculously beaten, abused and tormented that I briefly considered starting a home for it and marketing telethons help others like it.
I think the only thing that saved this ENTIRE series for me was the relationship between Bones and Cat. Passionate, loving, flawed, sometimes almost breakable, realistic. I don't know and since I had to turn my brain...more

Now I know why this series is so massively popular!
I have a bit of a confession to make before I talk about this book. First off, I wasn’t too keen on the Night Huntress thing when I started the series earlier this year. In fact, I hated Cat and her beliefs about vampires and wasn’t that enamoured by Bones in the previous three books. That being said, I was skeptical going into this book because I was hoping and praying that this one would capture my attention. Going into this, my favourite book...more

The freakish villain, the raw emotions, the tense ending, and the inclusion of my favorite character, Vlad, made this one an interesting enough read. But I had many problems with it along the way.
You know that couple who love each other overwhelmingly, but are just so volatile together, you think they'd be better apart? Because you're sure one day they'll love each other to death?
Cat and Bones become that couple.
I was sure they'd murder each other before the threat was resolved. The lesson of...more

Destined for an Early Grave was an okay read. The one-liners were hilarious, the story was okay and I liked the bantering between Cat and Bones. I'm a sucker for angsty love and since the relational problems were big in this book, I enjoyed the story.
But still... By now I should be used to the one-dimensional characters, the lack of back story and the waste of all the nice ideas Frost has. And I am. A bit. Still I can't bear to see characters come and go without any explanation. Like T...more

Update: 6/6/11 - Very good read. It wasn't as stressful this time around since I knew what was going to happen, however, my heart still dropped at some of the scenes between them.
Original review: 9/10/2009 - I have to say that this was my least favorite of the series, but enjoyable nonetheless. I just want Cat and Bones to be happy and there was way too much emotional angst going on. I get that things need to be a bit spicy to keep things interesting, but it was almost like a soap opera. I loved this entire series, it's one of my tops! This one was really good but I didn't like how Cat & Bones were at odds for so much of the book! That's the reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. The rest of the book was great....lots of action! I hope Jeaniene Frost continues the story of Cat & Bones! I would definitely change one thing though....make Cat's mom quit being such a whiny bitch!

I found this book rather trying. On the relationship side of things, Cat and Bones were so snippy and unfair with each other. Bones's overprotectiveness and Cat's insecurities and bitchiness were too much. Their constant arguments, deliberate lack of communication, jealousies, suspicions about betrayals, nastiness and anger with each other got so tiring and frustrating that on one level, I wondered whether they really ought to remain together. WOW. What a change in pace.
You would have never guessed at the start of this book just what all challenges were to come.
It seems our beloved characters were on Possessive, uncommunicative, spiteful, and mood alternating pills. Both Cat and Bones were acting like possessive pigheaded know-it-alls.
Whether from his recent power increase or just a nasty bug up his butt, Bones for some reason thought Cat should bow down to him now and watch her actions around him.

I feel like I should write two reviews for this, one for the majority of the book and one for the ending.
Catherine (Cat) Crawfield started out as a bad-ass, tough woman; who was an intelligent, take-charge leader. Unfortunately, somewhere along the way we lost that character. Through the majority of "Destined for an Early Grave", the 4th book in the Night Huntress series, the reader is forced to listen to the inner dialogue of a woman with a very low self-esteem. When did Cat become this woman?...more

Thinking they are headed to Paris for a much needed vacation- imagine Cat and Bones’s surprise to find out they were lured there by a Master Vamp Dreamsnatcher named Gregor who insists he has a prior claim on Cat. You see vampires mate for life so if Cat really is mated with another vamp, she and Bones will have to part ways. Yeah bones aint likin that one to too much but instead of communicating honestly with each other, Bones and Cat once again work at cross purposes until they, actually rathe...more

Book #70 of 2009
I'll admit that about 1/2 of this book had me seriously pissed off. I guess it was probably because the book is in first person and we get to hear all of Cat's mental berrating of herself and only get to witness what Bones does. But for awhile I was wondering where the strong female heroine from Book #1 had gone that she would accept that SHE had done something wrong, rather than stand up for herself and her reasons for acting the way she did. I enjoyed continuation of the Night Huntress. With a broad brush stoke the author painted the world crimson and weighted the characters down with more emotion than the previous 3 books!
Cat is being tormented with nightmares and when she finds out why, she gets mad. She wants to get even but, of course, Bones want to protect her. This story was heartwrenching. I wish Jeaniene Frost had included Bones' point of view, but that's not really her style. This plot was more about the relationship between Bones and Cat than the earlier stories, and the external threat just highlighted that.
I found Cat's thinking processes fascinating. I thought it was very realistic for Frost to have her not realize until near the end of the book that she was not giving Bones the complete committment he needed. I also found that for me, their co...more

Bones

Cat Crawfield

I enjoyed this book more than the second and third book. Maybe because I have quite a long break between book 3 and this. Halfway through the book, I was thinking, why is this series not made into a movie? Shall take a break before reading the 5th book!

This was my least favorite in this series so far. It was too dramatic and I felt that Cat was acting out of character - letting herself be bossed around and not standing up for herself. Bones was also playing the "dominant male" card which I can't stomach. I hate that. I felt like neither of them were acting like themselves.
Turns out, when Cat was younger, she was kidnapped by a super powerful vampire named Gregor. He had visions of Cat in the future and wanted her power for himself ((view spoil...more

As with most urban fantasy series I read, I tend to fall in love with the side characters. For the moment, I'm more interested in Ian, Juan, Tates, Spade, Mencheres, and Vlad. Luckily, there are stories for three out of the six characters I listed. Again, as with most vampire stories I find it perplexing that for a species that live forever, why and how are they all so unintelligent when dealing with their own species. I mean, their advantage of being around for over hundreds of years means that...more

After the big showdown in „At Grave’s End“ with Mencheres’ ex-wife, Cat and Bones decide to spend some time in Paris. But soon enough new trouble is showing up on the horizon. Cat is having dreams of a powerful (what else?) vampire named Gregor, the dreamsnatcher. He claims to be her rightful husband and that she was unwillingly ripped from his arms 12 years ago. Mencheres then deleted these memories from Cat’s mind, which can now only be restored by Gregor himself.

When they arrive in Paris, they are met by Mencheres and it is discovered that Cat is being hunted by the Dreamsnatcher, Gregor.

“Then you remember the dream,” Mencheres stated. “That bodes ill.”
The fear of that made my reply snappy. “Hey, Walks Like An Egyptian, how about for once you drop the formal stuff and talk like you live in the twenty-first century?”
The shit’s gonna splatter, start buggin’, yo,” Mencheres responded instantly.
I stared at him, then burst out laughing, which was highly inappropriate considering the very grave warning he’d just conveyed.”
