Duck is awoken early in the morning by a strange sound coming from under her bed. It was a pshh pshh sound. Duck did not know what it was and was too scared to look under the bed. So instead she jumped out of bed and ran to get help. Yelling out of her window, Duck called to Pig and told him what she had heard. Pig ran to get someone stronger than he to deal with it. When he found Bear, he told Bear that the noise was pshh pshh Bang Bang! Bear suggested they find someone loud enough to deal with...more

I thought The Great Monster Hunt was absolutely adorable. The story begins with Duck, who wakes up in the morning hearing a strange noise from underneath her bed. Too afraid to look, she jumps out of bed and runs to her friends for help from the "terrifying monster". One by one Duck searches for the perfect friend to save her...someone strong, someone loud, someone clever. Finally, with four friends in toe, Duck makes the terrifying return home and carefully peaks under her bed to reveal...a tin...more

I love the illustrations in this. I'm sure I've read other books with the same illustrator. What grabbed my attention was the title, since my NGA this week is "Monster Hunters." Though this isn't quite as monstery & gore as the boys might expect, I thought it would be a twist to begin the program with this book. It is funny to see the animals' telephonesque additions of the monter's sounds. I figured reading the book would be a good gathering activity while I wait for the late-comers. They'l...more

When Duck hears a snuffling sound under her bed, she runs for help to Pig, who runs for help to Bear...as the story is shared, the story grows, until the "pssh pssh" has become a horrible, deadly, monster sound! All the animals come to save the day, but it may turn out that this strange noise has been seriously exaggerated. This book is a little long for a storytime, but it would still be a successful choice because of the cumulating rhythm of the story.

When Duck hears a noise coming from underneath her bed, she's sure it can't be good. She asks Pig for help. Pig asks Bear for help and Bear asks Wolf for help. Then, Wolf asks Owl for help. Each time the story (of Duck's noise under the bed) is repeated, it gets longer and louder. Owl is sure they're dealing with a monster. And off they go on a monster hunt...only to find a mouse!

What I thought: What a funny book. The friends exaggerate and even the reader doesn't know what's under the bed. Remi...more

Basic plot: There's a monster under the bed! Or is there?

This was a cute story, clearly designed for reading aloud. There were a lot of fun sound effects and silly animal antics to make the reading experience more fun. The art in the book was also really well done, and you can't beat the ending for its sheer cuteness factor. I highly enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this story that you can use to teach "telephone" or rumors. Duck shouts to pig who shouts to bear, wolf, and owl that there is a suspicious noise coming from underneath her bed. It gets out of control about what the noise actually is until they realize this tiny noise (that blew up big through the grapevine) was only a sleeping mouse!

This is an enjoyable story to read for Halloween when children have many scary themes in their heads. It is also appropriate to relate to our view of other people in our lives. When we respect our peers and call on them for help, we can accomplish anything, and our expereinces are that much more meaningful because of it.

This is a fun sequence book that starts out with just a psh psh sound and by the time all of the friends are added throughout the story the horrible monster is making a psh psh, grrrr, bang bang, wham wham, grrrowll, and ooooooooeeeeee!!! sound! All of these sounds are repeated with each friend.

One of the Building Blocks nominees for this year. I thought it was a really cute story. I liked how the story of the monster grew as each new character told the story of Duck's monster under her bed. Very cute ending. The illustrations are very well done, too. I really liked this book.

Read to the Kindergarden at University Academy. This was cute and fun, might want to make sure the kids can be a little loud as they wanted to do all the sounds. Someone already knew what was under the bed so that was a bit of a bummer for those who were making guesses.

I loved this. It's great for voices and is just a lot of fun. We've only had it a couple hours and I have already read it 3 times to my 3 y/o daughter. Looks like we might have to find a copy to keep and not just checked out from the library. Also, great illustrations!!
Christy Head
Great chances for vocalization and a cute tale of turning a mountain into a mole hill--or, more accurately, a mouse into a monster. Also teaches about how everyone can play an important part in a quest as simple as a monster under the bed.
Angie
I thought this was really cute. I especially loved how the monster became bigger and scarier as the story progressed. This will make a great read aloud. Kids will be able to say the lines with you as you describe the "monster".

Funny book where animals exaggerate the noise coming from under Duck's bed as they gather more and more helpers. A little suspenseful and then funny. Cute illustrations--Rachel V.

Super cute illustrations about different animals in the forest that get "scared" of some sounds they hear. Little by little they find out the sounds are coming from a mouse!
Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy)
This was fun...all the animals try to help out Duck in finding out what is making the scary noise? Is it a monster? The surprise ending it great. Illustrations are nice.

I really liked this one! The illustrations are tremendous and the expressions are captured so wonderfully! Would be great for phonological awareness when emphasizing the sounds.

This is quite a cute book. I am enjoying reading it to the kids. All the characters, Duck, Pig, Bear, Wolf and Owl are all very cute. Great illustrations.

This was a funny story. There was a noise that the character though was a monster. This can be use to share funny story and make text to self connections.

I chose this book to read before Halloween to the young students. They are enjoying it and it has some opportunities to pick up on synonyms.
Amanda
ages 4+ (under 4, don't realize that each time the animal repeats the story the monster sounds scarier so they don't appreciate the ending as much)
Felicia
This book is funny and it also teaches that it is not a good idea to exaggerate or gossip, things can get out of hand.
Janeene
My 4-year-old loves this book! She asks to read it almost every night. Cute book, with unexpected ending.

I thought this was a cute book-great illustrations. I might try it for storytime, but it could be too long.
