McKillip's magical prose and gorgeous style does not fail to enchant. 'Something Rich and Strange' is short and meant to be read in one sitting.
If you love beaches, love the sea and don't mind a tale that is not very plot driven, then I would recommend this. The beach will never look the same again.

I found this book to be enjoyable and fast paced, with a lot to keep you interested. It was really quite riveting, with a lot of action. However, I really felt that it could have gone a lot further. The fact of the matter is, as an old marvel fan, I've seen this story told at least a hundred times, with slight variations. But the basic meat of this tale has been told and retold; in many comic flash backs, The cartoon series, the movie, and there's been a comic miniseries focusing solely on Wolve

As a story in itself, I would probably give this 4 stars, but I wanted to give higher marks to the author's writing style in general - actually, the title of this book pretty accurately describes the way she writes her fantasy novels. Also, this book holds a special place in my heart, having read it as a teenager interested in both artistry and the sea. And of course tortured romances.

Something Rich and Strange
(with illustrations by Brian Froud)
This book was nowhere near as successful as McKillip's best. I think it's because it remained too grounded in our world--the best McKillip, with the exception of the Riddle-master sequence, is that which takes us into a dream, weaving it around us so tightly that when the story ends we emerge shaken, wondering what we're looking at. Something Rich and Strange never does that. I don't know that it even tries to. I More...

This is a fantasy that reminded me of a folktale like the Selkie tale and of the ckassic story of seductive sirens on Homer's journey. Dreamy. Mysterious.Tense. Most enjoyed the descriptions of the ocean, the beaches and the cliffs along Oregon's coast.

The language in this book began so dream-like and beautiful and I was immediately interested in the characters. However, but just beyond the half-way mark it got really flat, the characters lost all interest and personality and I couldn't wait for it to be over!

Patricia McKillip's style is very different from what one normally encounters. It works perfectly for stories of faerieland. I like other books by her much better, but it was worth reading.

This was a very cool book, full of the magic and dark mysteries of the ocean. My head is still full of images of waves, scales and pearls. I didn't feel like the characters had much personality, which was not so good, but it was a great tale.

I'm giving this book 3 stars because the reprint lacks all of the color illustrations from the first edition. The story itself gets 4.5 stars.

(2/9/11) I liked the concept, but failed to get into the novel very much. The paintings were beautiful though.

Patricia McKillip writing & Brian Froud's illustrations. What more could one ask?

I read this book while sitting on the beach at Assateague Island. It is the perfect read for lovers of the ocean and full of magick and whimsy. I have read many of Patricia McKillips books and this one was a nice easy book that swept me away along with the ocean waves I heard while reading on the beach.

The book is supposedly based around illustrations by Brian Froud, but the connection is (fortunately) a tenuous one. The book is McKillip doing what she does best, though in a more recognizable world. The book has a Message, but handles it surprisingly well without compromising its plot or characters.

I adore mckillip, but this book was just a bit too strange for me. I didn't particularly like the main characters, either, and that made it difficult to get through. But if you like the ocean and think it's mysterious, you have to read this book.

I was severely disappointed with this book - the ocean offers so much rich potential for story telling, and instead we get a modern update of Hans Christian Andersen's melodramatic angst.

(Read reprint without illustrations)
Good characterization, good story except for a couple of heavy-handed message paragraphs near the end.

Not McKillip's best, but an interesting story. My copy is beautiful - it is one of the limited editions with Brian Froud's artwork.

Mine is illustrated by Brian Froud - which is honestly why I picked it up. A lovely story about what you can find when looking...

don't read it unless you know sea terms and you like the ocean. It was almost written to be about mermaids not fairies
