I thought two of these stories were good enough to include on my Contemporary Short Stories syllabus this semester (Hitting Trees With Sticks by Jane Rogers and Lionel Shriver's Exchange Rates). I didn't think much of the winning story, 'The Not-Dead and the Saved', though. Despite the gravity of the subject matter, the story came across a bit trite. I thought the runner-up story was nice, but not very emotionally complex.

"Other People's Gods" is an endearing story. The narration is sharp and humorous, and the end of the story packs a real punch.
I like the other stories too but Ganesha triumphs.

Five excellent short stories. Jane Rogers' 'Hitting Trees With Sticks' may well be the best short story I've ever read.
I love the fact that this year 4/5 of the stories are written by women! And they were all really interesting reads... Normally I put a short story book down half way through but they seemed to complement each other.
