I'm not sure if it's because I read these late at night or because McKinley did something wonky with her prose, but I found this collection of fantasy shorts harder to follow than anything else I've read by her. Especially in the beginning, the language is a little hard to follow and the long, loooong blocks of prose are chunky and difficult to navigate.

This book was good---a bit short to me, but good. Robin McKinley tells 4 stories in this book. The first(The Door in the Hedge) tells the story of Princes Linadel and her seventeenth birthday, the second being The Hunting of the Hind (i think?) where Korah's brother is bewitched by the hind and it is up to her to save him from the spell. The third one is a favorite: The Frog Princess. Princess Rana is courted- unhappily- by the Prince ALiyander, a sorcerer. She finds a frog in the pond who retri...more

I fell in love with fantasy when I read Beauty by Robin McKinley. I quickly read The Hero and the Crown, the Blue Sword, and the Outlaws of Sherwood. I spotted this on the shelf at the library last week, and thought a little Robin McKinley was just what I was in the mood for. I had a vague impression as I read it that I had read it as a child, but it was wonderful all the same. She has such a way with descriptions--even though you know the princess is always going to end up with Prince Charm...more

ok, I personally don't care for robin mckinley's way of writing. She does an EXCELLENT job of describing settings, and emotions the characters have, but there is almost NO dialog!!!!!!!!!! I read her first story which is maybe about 75 pages, and there would probably only be enough dialog in the whole story to fill 2 pages. No exaggeration! I was really disappointed. Other than that the story was good. I don't think I'll read the other 3 stories in the book. I just couldn't focus on the d...more

A nice collection of 4 short stories, 2 original and 2 retellings by Robin McKinley.
The Door in the Hedge and The Golden Hind were enjoyable to read because they were new, but they were lacking something. But I really enjoyed the retellings.
The Frog Prince and The Twelve Dancing Princesses changed some of the little facts from what I remember, but the slight changes just made the story more interesting to read.

This is a compilation of 4 short stories. The first story of the book is a creative, eerie story that was completely new to me. It was really interesting. The other stories are familiar fairy tales, expounded upon... The Princess and the Frog, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, etc. If you enjoy more complete re-tellings of fairy tales, you'll probably enjoy this collection.

I enjoyed reading these short fairy tales. I wanted the stories to last longer. I don't particularly care for how she ends her stories. The ending feels abrupt. You get to the point where the conflict is over and realize so is the story. There is little time to devoted to life after the conflict is resolved. In spite of that, I still enjoyed the book.

I never finished it... I just didn't want to! I mean, I love fairy tales and stuff, but even though McKinley's a pretty good writer, I can't say so much for the stories themselves. They were hard to follow and in all honesty, I think there are books out there that are better worth your time.

Once I figured out that it was a collection of short stories and not one complete story I enjoyed it more! The stories were ones I was less familiar with, and McKinley does a nice job with them.

The stories were very charming, I only wished for more. The stories ended to quickly, but if she was trying to meet a certain word limit, she did it well.

I don't think she can write anything I don't enjoy. The stories were short and creative but left me feeling like she had left something important out.

McKinley writes quite a good short story and as these are based on fairy tales or the concept of faerie I found them enjoyable.

McKinley is best as a novelist. Her short stories always feel like they are waiting for the rest of the book.

I read it after I read her other book "The Blue Sword". This book is her twist on common fairy tales.

I was expecting one story. This is 4 short stories. It was still good, just not my favorite.

The Twelve Dancing Princesses re-telling was my favorite of these 4 stories. 3 1/2 stars.
