This award-winning short story was later expanded into the fuller novel-length Dreamsnake and became its first chapter. Snake is a young healer whose use of snakes in creating healing venom is little understood by those she tries to helps. In this poignant story, her attempt to assist a young boy dying of a tumor leads to a terrible conclusion.

One of the classic science fiction stories, told by a woman about a woman, at a time when women in science fiction were rare. McIntyre thinks, and feels, with an elegance we rarely see.
