Arriving on Earth in the midst of the American Civil War, the Doctor and Amy must get a posse together to help them retrieve an alien artifact that has fallen into the clutches of the Confederate army. The terraforming device belongs to the Cei, a race of invaders who plan to use it to turn the planet into a new home world.

It's better than some recent episodes of the TV show!
On a more serious note, I think Matt Smith did a fairly good job of reading this. It wasn't quite as good as his 'average' on the show, but it was better than his feeble attempts at voicing the adventure games. He did a nice range of accents, although bizarrely his Amy Pond sounded more Scottish than Karen Gillan's!
But I have to agree with the Goodreads user who said that Oli Smith's pacing is absolutely terrible. The scenes just fire like a m...more

Amy and the Doctor arrive in the Ol' West, to be confronted by three men who all claim that they've been hired for a job.
With the help of their new friends, Amy and the Doctor must acquire a dangerous alien piece of technology.
Now they've got enemies on both sides - soldiers and aliens - coming to claim what they feel is theirs to take.

The Runaway Train is Matt Smith's first Doctor Who audio, and he does a great job with it. As a story, it's fairly straightforward (not a bad thing) and chugs along at a brisk pace while still leaving time for great character moments. Ollie Smith is to be commended for capturing the new Doctor, and more importantly Amy right off the bat. I can only hope that the rest of the BBC produced stories follow suit since they don't have a good track record in doing the companions justice (ala Pest Contro...more

This was a free giveaway Doctor Who CD from the Daily Telegraph, apparently to be released more formally in a few months as one of the planned series of Eleventh Doctor original audio books. It's set in the Wild West, which is less original a concept than it was before The Peacemaker (Tenth Doctor book and audio from 2008) and Freakshow (Companion Chronicle audio as told by Mark Strickson as Turlough from ealier this year), and of course was used in Old...more

This is the first 11th Doctor book I ever read, and if I am not mistaken I believe it was the first audio book to be released. I chose it to be my first 11th Doctor novel simply because it's set during the Civil War and I love the American Civil War and I wanted to see what they did with it.
First off, this is narrated by the 11th Doctor himself, Matt Smith. That's another reason I chose this book actually. And I have to say that Matt Smith did such an amazing job narrating this book. Of course,...more

doctor who fans, kids of all ages, adults, teens,
I'm generally not an expanded universe or fanfiction kind of girl. Extremely picky. Voice is key because half the fun of Doctor Who is, well, the Doctor and the characters he picks up along the way!
Audiobooks, then, have got my attention.
Matt Smith is a wonderful reader, and while it's to be agreed that he doesn't do Amy's voice perfectly - he's a guy and not Scottish so we'll forgive him for that. XD His Southern accent is hilarious.

This was my first Matt Smith audiobook. The story was not terrible, but did not blow me away. I could see this being a mid-season episode, but might find is lacking for any sort of finale. Smith does a good job of portraying the 11th Doctor, but trips up now and again doing Amy and Confederate soldiers.
Going by Goodreads rating, I give it 3 stars, I liked it. For the Doctor Who fan this is a nice hour of listening while working on something, but does not hit my "must-see/listen" list. Also, prob...more

I like watching the adventures of the Doctor much more than listening to them. You see, for me the whole Doctor Who experience includes those crappy BBC effects and admiring the pretty things such as the TARDIS and... Amy Pond.
Additionally I didn't like the story and I'd given it one star if another person had read it to me. But well, Matt Smith is made of some serious awesome with all the accents and the comeonfuckme voice of his. He could tell me stories of tortured kittens and I'd still be li...more

The first audio book of the Matt Smith is a bit of a disappointment. Maybe it's that author Oli Smith didn't have access to episodes featuring Smith and Karen Gillian as Amy Pond to draw on in creating the characters or maybe it's just that the whole story feels like something we've heard/read before.
Either way, it's a fairly straight-forward story without any major surprises. Matt Smith does a good job reading the story but he's not given a lot to work with here.

I have a feeling I may have cheated a little by listening to a 1-hr audio book instead of reading, but c’mon … it’s Doctor Who being read by Matt Smith himself. How could I possibly refuse?
The story wasn’t the most compelling Doctor Who tale, but I found this amusing and kept getting that Back to the Future III vibe (complete with train running out of tracks and plummeting to gorge floor). The Doctor and Amy arrive in...more

A standard fare Doctor story of the less innovative kind. Some Southern stereotypes, a boringly written Amy and sequences obviously made because the author thought "Wouldn't it be cool if a spaceship raced a Civil War train!" But the faults aside, I still enjoyed it as a quick fast-paced Doctor Who fix. It works for some mindless fun, and an extra star for Matt Smith's reading.
Audiobook: Matt Smith is an awesome narrator in this mini adventure with Amy and the Doctor hitting the old west to save Earth from a mysterious fate. Of course with cowboys you're gonna get good guys and bad guys, so it's important to enlist a good crew. I could listened to these books all day. Oh wait, I have been.
I enjoyed having Matt Smith, the eleventh Doctor himself, read this one, and the idea of racing to avoid a terraformer 'bomb' exploding on Earth and making it unfit for human habitation was engaging but the American Civil War setting wasn't entirely successful and it didn't hold my attention well. I am still in the dark about the relevance of the runaway train...
Not going to spoil anyone, but this is definitely one of the better Doctor Who audiobooks that's been released within the last five years. Matt Smith can actually do a southern American accent with astonishing ease and believability, not to mention switching back and forth between characters.
Loved the story. Nothing like a good (space) western for the soul. <3 I can't wait for more of the Eleven/Amy adventures to be released!

Didn't feel worth the $6 I spent on it. Matt Smith does a nice job reading. Loved the "Southern" accent he affects for some of the characters.
The ending was a disappointment. It just wraps up too neatly, too quickly.
Other than that, this audio book feels like an episode from the TV show. Not a great episode, but an OK one.
Matt Smith's narration saved this story for me. The story lacked imagination and it was quite boring. It also underutilized the backdrop of the American Civil War, which was really disappointing as this was what made me choose this Doctor Who story over many others.
Nice little Wild West story with a little alien tech and off screen timey-wimey.
Matt Smith reads the story in an engaging way and does the voices and AMerican accents for the different characters.
The Doctor and Amy land right in the Wild West and meet a group of men that claim the Doctor has hired them to perform a task. The Doctor doesnt remeber and can't believe he ould need the help. But in fact there is a bit of alien tech that needs to be recovered before it becomes a danger to life on pla...more

A short but fun adventure with the Doctor and Amy Pond set during the US Civil War. The audiobook was narrated by Matt Smith, which made it all the more enjoyable.
The Runaway Train is a perfect example of why most people don't bother with tie-in media. It really is a special kind of awful. Imagine a high schooler re-writing 3:10 to Yuma to feature The Doctor. Yep. It's worse than that. Matt Smith's awful southern accent is the best part; it's the only thing about his that really amused me.
