This book was a cracking good read. I really enjoyed the push-pull between the hero and heroine. It was fun and engaging and I was completely immersed -the very best kind of romance!

The tension created by the two different perspectives of Emily and Blade was well done and very entertaining. She is naive and he is cynical and bent on revenge. But Quick inserts enough ambiguity into this dynamic that the heroine never is at the hero's mercy. She never does anything she does not want to do. She has...more

I do not think I like Amanda Quick's heroes either. They're all so cool. Marble. Ice men. Emotionless. They NEVER give anything away to their heroines. Can't crack a smile, much less a joke. This irks me. Badly.

And if I have to hear the words: Metaphysical, transcendental, or higher plane one more time....there will be explosive projectile vomiting.

The ending was the best part. It's over now.

3 stars is a high rating. But I suppose it is apt.

Some books can be read anywhere, others suit a certain mood. After a heavy day gardening, I was in the mood for a nice fluffy relaxing book to read in the bath. Decided Stephen King probably didn't fit the bill, while Amanda Quick most certainly does.
So, another one of those books where you know nothing really nasty is ever going to befall our hero & heroine and prevent them from being together - although there are the necessary alarms and hurdles in the path of true love.

A few campy, chuckling moments due to naive heroine, but plot was weak. My mind kept wandering.

This author has written many books under the names Jayne Ann Krentz, Amanda Quick, and Jayne Castle. She has a wonderful writing style and can make almost anything entertaining. But I feel like she ran out of ideas - as if she pulled the words charming eccentric naive romantic female out of a hat and tried to do something with it, again. Then she added brilliant business financial mind. The positive wa...more

Upon reading a synopsis of Scandal, I was hesitant to read it. I haven't read a marriage of convenience in a long time and really, this just didn't seem like my thing. I got about a quarter of the way through and still wasn't so sure. The heroine, Emily, appears almost stupid at parts, too stuck in her romantic literature to face reality. However, there is a point, when she carefully lays out the reasons the Earl should marry her, where Emily's supposed stupidity becomes almost endearing and the...more

Like most readers I like strong and intelligent heroines. Emily is that, but she's also very naïve and gets carried away with her poetry – which got annoying. Even though later we realize that her romantical (I hate when they used this term in the book) imagination is probably how she coped with the hard realities in her life, it was too late for me to overlook my annoyance.. therefore I never ended up liking her. At all.

In the first 3/4 of the book, I didn’t like any of the characters!! And I R...more

Scandal by Amanda Quick was so not the book for me.

***** slight spoilers*****

Emily Farringdon has been corresponding with the Earl of Blade for some time and has already fallen quite desperately in love with him. She is sure that he is an honorable and good man but she is not counting on ever meeting him. Emily's reputation is tainted by 'the Unfortunate Incident' as she calls it. When she does meet Simon, the Earl of Blade, she is surprised that he doesn't seem bothered by her past and practi...more

Enjoyable story of a wildly romantic, naive young woman who is married by a man who wants to use her to gain revenge on her family. Normally, I have no use for revenge plots that involve using innocent parties but this is a light, airy love story. Simon's 23 year quest for vengence quickly begins to fall apart in face of Emily's steadfast love and conviction that he is a noble and decent man. That is the fun part. At times, Emily teeters on the edge of annoying with her constant reference to flo...more

This was chosen for the Smart Bitches bookclub over the holiday break and while I didn't get a chance to read it then, I did want to come back to it. Amanda Quick was one of my first romance authors and was instrumental on getting me hooked into the genre. At age 13, I LOVED (lived and breathed) strong, quirky heroines, strong heroes, and the negotiation of relationships in romance novels (not to mention the steamy sexxxings) fed the imagination of this young feminist. Quick tends to write exact...more

From Library Journal:

Before Quick began writing about the paranormal world of the Arcane Society and Lantern Street, she wrote charming and fun Regency-era romances that make grand next reads for Quinn fans. The best of these is the story of Emily Faringdon and the Earl of Blade. Emily lives for poetry (which she writes very badly) and on the side makes investments for her feckless father and brothers (which she does very well). Blade, whose family was ruined by Emily’s father, seduces her into...more

This is another example of the historical romance that Amanda Quick is known for. Emily Faringdon has been bailing her twin brothers and father out of debt since she was a teenager. She has a youthful indiscretion that led her to be relegated to the country and she longs for a love that will look past the scandal attached to her name. The Earl of Blade has had a plan of vengeance for fifteen years, and he started to correspond with Emily because of her family. When he meets Emily, he finds himse...more

Synopsis:
Resigned to a life of spinsterhood following a youthful indiscretion, Emily Faringdon never dreamed she would meet anyone who could see beyond her past. Simon Traherne, Earl of Blade, will let nothing stand in the way of his vengeance against the Faringdon family until he meets Emily and realizes that some things are more important the revenge.

Review:
Quick's books never fail to put a smile on my face. The writing is immersing and the dialogue exceedingly witty.

I enjoyed this story, even though I don't like revenge plots in general.

The main characters were both likable in their own way. I liked Simon's intelligence and courage, even though he can be ruthless and manipulative (and behave like an ass) at times. He is a typical romance hero, I think, and I'm not sure if Ms. Quick's attempt to make him "exotic" worked, but that's neither here nor there.
Simon's thoroughly chilling effect on the Thursday Afternoon Literary Society was amusing in some ways.

Please note: This review is still in progress.

I've had a bad 2013 so far, health-wise.

For me, at least, it's been very bad. I've lost a lot of interest in my hobbies. Medication has had me staring at walls like a zombie.

I read this book for the first time years and years ago. Never able to find it again, no matter how hard I looked.

This year, for some strange reason, I just had to find this book again. I was desperate and I had to know. Thanks to the wonderful ladies and the Romance Forum Refug...more

Emily's naiveté, romanticism and bad poetry might make you cringe, until you realize that her escapism masks an understanding of the harsh realities of life. (Some readers never forgive Emily's flights of fancy--just glance through the other reviews!) But while Emily understands those harsh realities, she doesn't always accept them. She's made her peace with the faults of her father and siblings, but she's determined to see Simon, her revenge-obsessed husband, live up to nobler ideals. Simon gra...more

I loved this Romance! It was the perfect balance of strong but flawed heroine and strong but flawed hero who don't seem like they should mesh...but do. What I liked so much about romance was that her belief in him made him a better person. She'd been content with her lot in life before he came, and even finding out his true intentions never really alters that belief...and it is that belief that allows him to let go of hurts and those evil intentions, even if he doesn't ever quite succumb to her...more

Emily is deeply into romantic imaginings. She believes that's all she'll ever be able to do, imagine, because she had an Unfortunate Incident when she was 19.

EVERYONE knows about it. Her father tells her (and everyone else willing to listen) how RUINED she is. Too bad she'll just have to stay home and make money on the exchange for he and her twin brothers.

She begins a correspondence with S.A. Traherne, not knowing that he is Simon Augustus Traherne, the mysterious Earl of Blade.

He knows exactly...more

I hated the hero by the end of the first page. He did not improve.

This is one of those pernicious books that spreads the myth that the love of a good woman will change an abusive husband. I really should have given up the first time he became overtly abusive, because he goes on and on, and you begin to wonder what is wrong with the heroine that she doesn't ever believe her husband is anything but a good man. It just kept getting worse and worse, and I was reading in a kind of horrified fascinati...more

Emily Faringdon has been corresponding with Simon Traherne for some time. She is in love with the man that she believes him to be from his letters. But she doesn't know that Simon has a past. Twenty-three years ago, her father drove his father to bankruptcy and suicide. For now, she just knows that he's shown up in her town. Emily has a past. She once ran away with a man who is now a lauded poet. If people knew, she would be ruined. Emily knows she has no chance at a happy marriage, now if she c...more

I tried this back in the days when I read almost no romance except Georgette Heyer, and didn't really give it a fair shot. I wasn't used to the style, and could not deal with sex scenes in historicals back then. (Especially since my mother-in-law lent it to me! I was too embarrassed to give it back.) Now I see I've been giving Amanda Quick a bad rap. It's fast paced and fun, and although the too too adorable heroine drove me up the freakin' wall most of the time, she has moments of intelligence...more

This book encompassed everything that I have come to love about Amanda Quick's novels (as well as the Jayne Ann Krentz and Jayne Castle books). The eccentric heroine and the strong, dark hero with the potentially questionable morals who is occasionally totally bewildered by the said eccentric heroine.

There were definitely parts where I was completely frustrated by Simon and his attitude, but Emily was always able to get past it and the reader learns more about why he is the way he is.

Simon is a man bent on revenge who marries Emily as a means to get it. Emily, for me, was a puzzling character. She is pretty naive in the ways of the world and likes to see the best in everyone. However, she is very smart when it comes to business affairs. I had a hard time wrapping my brain around her. Just when I thought she would react one way to a situation, she ended up doing the complete opposite. I think that enhanced the story though.

I was fun to watch Simon realize he really isn't cold...more

The heroine is too annoying to really enjoy the book. Annoying naive amd just plain idiotic. She's romantic to the point of it being so above and beyond being tolerable that I was dreading her speaking. She sounds dim when she talks about the higher spiritual or metaphysical realm.

And the hero isn't as all bad and sinister as we're to believe. Mediocre actually. Even when he's trying to be cruel it's just pathetic.

So all in all didn't love the book. Could have been a lot better because the sto...more

Scandal is about a poet and writer Emily who marries The Earl of Blade. The two of them have been writing to each other and Emily quickly falls in love with him without even meeting him. When he comes and meets her they get married and she find out that he is not the person he portrayed in his letters and that he married her to get revenge on her family. Emily is a naive writer who believes that most people are inherently good, especially her husband. She continually talks about how she and Blad...more

Could there have been a more ridiculous book ever written? If I hadn't read so many other books by Amanda Quick, I'd have to assume this was a joke. No one writes this horribly or includes such absurd dialogue.

Quick tried to develop a completely stupid set of metaphors throughout the book by comparing Simon to a dragon and Emily to an elf. They called each other by pet names - he called her elf and she called him dragon. Yup. Dumb. Emily even went so far as to have dragons embroidered on her cl...more

This one was kind of cute. Quick finally started finding her way. It starts off with an interesting premise…Simon Augustus Traherne, Earl of Blade, wants revenge on the family that caused his father’s financial ruin and suicide and he sees the key to his revenge in the daughter of that family, Emily Faringdon. Of course, while he has all these ideas and plots for revenge he isn’t actually prepared for the reality of Emily who is just a little annoying ray of sunshine and perkiness and puts conti...more

Although Amanda Quick/Jayne Ann Krentz/whatever your name is, is a huge romance author, I never have tried any of her work. Recently the Smart Bitches, Trashy Books romance website ran a post asking for everyone's favorite titles by this classic author and then compiled the favorite answers. I am usually leery of trying Old Skool romance, but I couldn’t resist trying this one and it was Amazing. I literally couldn't put it down and read it in one fell swoop. It literally had me laughing out loud...more

The other day, I did what I usually do when the book I'm chewing on doesn't agree with me - I went to my historical shelf and looked for something easier to handle. I read lots of books like this one (there's just so many millions of them floating about the universe (or so it seems) that it's only probable that I'll brush up against one from time to time) but I'm not quite sure that I have ever seen one like Scandal by Amanda Quick. The main female character, Emily, is so utterly annoying and ri...more
