I want to say up-front that while I really enjoyed this book, there are a few plot holes, and some other things that I am sure will bug some readers.

For me, I really liked the book. I liked the first one a lot too, though. The author sounds like she wants to be the next Sherrilyn Kenyon mixed with JR Ward-hey who doesn't? (not in a rip-off kind of way, but in a really cool way).

I really liked our heroine Callia, and I did like Zander, however for what he did, I don't think he groveled enough.(I get the mis-communication that her father perpetuated, but I felt Zander was an ass) Although what he did say was sweet. I wish we had seen more backstory from 10 years ago when they met and fell in love. And you know how some authors take their sequel and re-hash the first book too much? This book didn't do that, which is awesome! But there was zero-to-no rehashing at all, so I was a bit confused since I read the first one a while back.

But, with all that said and done, my main problem with this book wasn't the writing or the plot (which I liked, plotholes and all), it was Max.

Entwined is book 2 of the Eternal Guardian series. This is such an unexpected surprise. I expect fun. I expected interesting, exciting, even creative, but I did not expect heart-clenching, heart-felt, and heart-melting.

"You don't understand. I didn't want to forget what happened, Zander. I wanted to forget you. I wanted to forget how I felt about you..."

"Is this your way of telling me you finally did?" he whispered.

"No. I didn't. I never have. That's the problem. It didn't work...Pain isn't freeing. It's just one more reminder of what you've lost. And now all I have are these ugly scars. That's what I'll have when this is all over."

I love stories where the characters get another opportunity at love. I appreciate Zander and Callia's shared history, and was eager to see how they resolve the problem that kept them apart in the first place. How do they reconcile? This second chance story goes emotionally deeper. This misunderstanding HURT. The assumptions, the lack of trust, the regret make way ultimately, for the redemption.

"If I had known," he said in a voice thick with emotion, "I would have been there with you. Every second. Nothing would have kept me away. And no one..." His muscles tensed against her. "No one would have ever hurt you." ... His fingers slid into her hair and he tipped her face to his gently. But it wasn't anger that plagued his features. It was regret. And sorrow. And a grief only she could understand."

Elisabeth Naughton infuses this emotional journey with quick-paced suspense. The story is compelling on so many levels. It just works.

Elisabeth Naughton has up the ante with Book 2. A fantastic read, it will entice you to the next book, Tempted.

Entwined was a good continuation of the Eternal Guardians series and I loved the main couple, Zander and Callie, and watching them come to terms with their past together while work through some deep and heart wrenching misunderstandings. I also enjoyed the continuing dynamics between the other Guardians and watching the series’ villain’s scheme and plot their evil. To realize all that has been done to them and that they were able to find their way back to each other, the journey was oh so worth it and one I’d take again & again. There was a lot of other content & story line that filled the pages of this book. Again the suspense & mystery that kept the story arc moving was exceptional, just as in MARKED. However what struck me most was the relationship between the H/h, Zander & Callia & once you read it, because *sending a subliminal message to you* YOU WILL GO AND BUY THESE BOOKS AND READ IMMEDIATELY, you will understand why. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside.....

That was a roller coaster of a book, but had great emotional pull that made you want to not put it down.

I found all the gods more easy to understand being book two, and how my feelings changed about the characthers through the book.

Zander - to me certain aspects of him reminded me of zsadist from bdb - which is no bad thing.
Isadora - she's stronger than others realise, but still lacking personality to me.

Where do I start to describe the awesomeness of Elisabeth Naughton’s second book in the Eternal Guardian series…..Entwined.
When you have an 800+ year old Argonaut, who believes he is immortal, but is hell bent on finding a way to end his life, you know the story is going to be explosive.
Throw into the mix a rage so all-consuming, that it is used to mask the despair he has suffered for 11 years and you will need to have a very cold heart or tissues on hand when you read this story.

I pretty much devoured this one, but that was to be expected due to the pacing and the story-within-story-within-story juiciness of this book. After this book, Elisabeth Naughton all but cemented her ability and talent as a PNR writer -- I mean the woman handles multiple plots as well as Nalini Singh and dare I say it, better than Sherrilyn Kenyon (Nick's whole time traveling thing has me beyond confused. I am well and truly confuzzled at this point).

I liked this book. It was... emotional. I really felt for Callia, and for Zander (who, I loved :D) There were a few plot holes, but all in all, I really liked the book.

This book is especially intense because Zander has had enough living after 800 years. The problem is he’s immortal, so dying isn’t going to happen any time soon. And he’s needed to help fight against the new wave of evil trying to extinguish the newly discovered half-human colony that Atalanta, a fallen goddess who wants it all any way she can get it, wants gone.

Another problem facing him is his attraction to the king’s healer, Callia. They spent a heat- and fire-filled night together years before, but betrayal has kept them apart ever since. They still sizzle when together, though. When Zander volunteers to be the Argonaut to marry Isadora, the princess heir, Callia is commanded to check the man out, make sure he doesn’t fire blanks. You can imagine how that ended up. They haven’t talked in ages, but talking now gets interrupted with sparks flying all over the place. Those sparks eventually turn into anger thrown back and forth, and the tension between them from that point on is palpable.

In the meantime, Atalanta is grooming her son Maximus to help her take over anything she can get her hands on and regain her immortal status. This little boy is something else. He plays along with her evilness, but he clings to his humanity with a will that rivals any god. He nearly stole the entire show for me.

The mythology in this series is fascinating with the twist Ms. Naughton has put on it. The politics of the race are intertwined throughout, even when you don’t realize it, another very interesting aspect of the story. The action against the daemons is fast paced and furious, swords clashing and heads rolling.

My only disappointment comes near the end when the truth is revealed about Maximus. I wanted more emotion, more satisfaction at the resulting realization. After learning what this child has lost for so many years, I just expected more reaction all the way around.

But even that isn’t enough to take away from this terrific story. Zander is a hero you feel for immediately, Callia a heroine you sympathize with, both for their loss and their hard-won love for each other. The other Argonauts are right in the thick of things, and I look forward to their books. Especially Demetrius. He’s so adamant in his demand against his king’s wishes that it will be interesting to watch when he finally succumbs.

While the story is about the relationship of Zander and Callia, running through every storyline is the threat that Atalanta still poses to both realms, even though she is now mortal. It doesn’t help that her daemons are becoming more brutal and attacking in a more brazen fashion or that Atalanta has another trick up her sleeve in her attempt to finally defeat the Argonauts and have her revenge.

I really enjoyed reading about Callia and Zander, both very likeable characters, and found their story to be more interesting than Casey and Theron’s. While we don’t see the major players from the last book as much, they are still a part of the story and Isadora (who will be forced to marry a surprising Argonaut, now that Theron is off the market),Titus (another Argonaut) and Orpheus have slightly larger roles.

As with the first in the series, I won this book from a giveaway on Killian McRae’s Web site (www.killianmcrae.com). I stated in my review of Marked that I wasn’t sure about this series because it’s more of a paranormal romance series rather than just a paranormal one. However, with this book there was less of a “tightening of the loins” type of feel to it than with the first one (though it wasn’t too bad in that one, just more than I prefer). I actually blew through Entwined in less than a day and really found myself caught up in the story. There’s usually more than one thing going on at any given time and jumping from one storyline to the next really helps keep my interest, particularly since they’re all pretty good. I also like the Greek mythology aspect of these stories, probably because they’re so different from everything else I’ve been reading.

The third book in the series comes out in September and is about Demetrius and Isadora and I can’t wait to read it and especially to see what Orpheus’ role in it will be!

I was sucked in from the first paragraph, and read this in one sitting. Zander is exactly what I love in a hero. Uber Alpha, but with a vulnerability. He believes himself to be immortal, yet is tired of life. To avoid spoilers, I will only say he pledges himself to a responsibility none of his fellow Argonauts are willing to take on, which gives him a sense of purpose he has been lacking. Let me first say I really like this series already. This is the second novel in the Eternal Guardians series about a group of warriors who are especially gifted for there species. Having descended from Ancient Greek heroes like Odysseus and Achilles, they are the big alphas of the Angolean race.

In this one the king continues with his hair brain scheme to marry off his daughter to a member of the Argonauts; keeping the monarchy and the ruling of the species away from the Council. If you're a fan of JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series, this is kind of like that. Especially with the council trying to move in and take over the monarchy- nobles who have too much time on their hands and a sense of arrogance (few being the exception).
This story centers on Callia, the king's healer, and Zander- an Argonaut descended from Herakles- who has lost his soul mate after finding her. As you probably guessed Callia is his soul mate, but after thinking her unfeeling toward him- he agrees to marry the king's eldest daughter, Isadora. Isadora accepts her fate a way too easy for my liking.
SIDE NOTE----> I'm mad about the way these females act though! Where the hell is wrong with a little modern feminism? I mean sure I am okay with a big strong male taking the lead, but come on!!!! The women for the most part get told who to marry, when to talk, etc. etc!!!! I had problems with Isadora's lack of spine. Sure she finally makes some headway in growing upand standing up for herself, but it's always behind closed doors. Callia too seems to just let things happen to her. Zander has his own Zhadist qualities about him that we all love. (mostly the emotionally damaged man part) Zander is just as enjoyable, though not more so than his brother, Theron. I just can't wait to read the next one, Tempted .
Naughton's writing is fast paced and fans of JR Ward are sure to love her heroes; if not her heroines. Though the world building is well developed, the characters are the big draw. Not only are the heroes emotionally damaged from having to fight an ongoing war with their sworn enemy, the goddess Atalanta, but they are having to do so while hoping/ not hoping to find their soul mates- a curse from one of the three fates. Definitely an author to start reading if you haven't already.

Bring on the next! I am really enjoying this series...though I'm starting to feel sorry for poor Isadora. She's already been jilted twice now with each guy ending up with a sister she didn't know she had. TAlk about grounds for a complex! She better start praying no more sisters pop out of the woodwork because the number of remaining Argonauts is dwindling. I've been pleasantly surprised by this series. I hadn't really heard much going in to it and had no expectations. I've been really pleased with the writing. At the end of Marked, Isadora, the princess, is still not married but has found her other half of the prophecy in Casey, which turned out to be the King's half daughter.

So, Isadora needs to marry and since it has to come from the Argonaut pool, the King must chose who she is too marry and produce that heir needed.

Zander is descended of Achilles and the oldest of the Guardians. Being the eldest, he's watched friends, brothers-in-arms, and leaders fall while he continues fighting. Ten years ago he thought he'd found the purpose for his long life. Perhaps his immortality was gifted to him so that he could be around to find Callia, the king's personal healer. It seemed, however, the ever unpredictable Fates had other plans for him, and his relationship with Callia came to an abrupt and emotional end.

Now both Zander and Callia avoid contact with one another as much as possible though both remain in the employment of the king. No talking, no touching, no acknowledging the existence of the other. However, their personal drama is soon escalated by the growing threat of daemons, horrific and detestable creatures who seek to feed on humans; an arranged marriage with the king's daughter, and a history they thought long since buried brought to the surface. Zander has survived centuries free of his descendant's famous fatal flaw, but his renewed proximity with Callia might be the impetus that reveals that weakness to friend and foe alike.

MY THOUGHTS
Two words. Quite. Enjoyable. This series is in the same vein as Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunters and Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld, so fans of either will appreciate the focus on one particular hero and his struggle to defeat a villain of mythological proportions while having his life complicated by a sometimes unwanted female presence. The Guardians are strong, often egotistical, and fiercely protective, making them the ultimate romantic heroes.

Often times in paranormal romance novels, I find myself drawn to the hero but ultimately unable to relate to the heroine. The heroine tends to be of one of two ilks: either she's whiny and causes the hero interminable suffering with her constant denial of both him and their current predicament, or the author sometimes overcompensates by making her almost too self-assured and confident by refusing any and all help from the hero. This type of heroine often insists she is always correct regardless of the information contradicting her personal assessment, and sets off to do what she thinks is best without thought to the alternative consequences outside the ones she has conjured in her head. Neither type is particularly appealing to me.

Callia is a wonderful blend of characteristics, where no one particular trait overwhelms the others to make her cross the boundary from enjoyable to obnoxious. She is intelligent and strong-willed, yet compassionate when the situation is appropriate. She listens to the available information and acts accordingly (except for one instance), keeping her feelings in check and letting rational thought prevail.

Her history with Zander is slowly revealed to us, and it becomes clear that a series of miscommunications has left permanent emotional footprints on both souls. Their history is tragic, their hurt palpable, and their pain obvious in every prolonged loaded silence. This is not the typical meet, fall into lust, profess undying love, and then temporarily separate only to be united in the end type of storyline that dominates so many paranormal romances. Instead, these two share a history of betrayal and loss that makes them seem real despite their paranormal abilities and supernatural environment.

And so as to not be outdone by her beautifully depicted protagonists, Naughton creates a wicked enemy who gives new meaning to "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned". Atalanta, former Argonaut like the Guardians and leader of the daemons, is blissfully cruel and terrifically callous, and I look forward to her continued presence in future installments.

Pick this one up if you like alpha males, strong yet realistic women, and a little Greek mythology in your romance.

With the king dying and his enemy, Atalanta, roaming the human realm waiting for the right time to cross into Argolea to exact her revenge for being cast out of the Argonauts, times are very dangerous. Things become even more taxing when Leonidas proclaims that his daughter Isadora will marry an Argonaut and beget an heir. Isadora doesn't want to marry anybody, least of all an Argonaut, and when Zander volunteers to be her husband, Callia feels as if her heart has been ripped apart. Zander is her soul mate, but after not seeing him for ten years, the hurt between them is still strong. Zander almost hates Callia with the same passion he once felt for her. Only he knows she did something so horrible that he can never forgive. Callia feels that Zander has betrayed her even though she still yearns for him. But Zander refuses to forgive Callia until the truth about the circumstances of their relationship come to light and all the deceit and lies are forced out into the open.

Entwined is heavy on Greek mythology with a tortured hero and heroine who have been betrayed by those they loved. Elisabeth Naughton relies heavily on the angst and the build up of passion between Zander and Callia. These two ache for one another but through confusion and miscommunication they are separated due to things they weren't aware of. Zander's anger toward Callia is very much alive on the pages and there is a point where you think these two will never work things out. Callia tries to work things out with Zander, who treats her with disdain and almost disgust.

The cast of characters that round out Enwtined are very rich in personality and spirit. Isadora is a fighter and refuses to be a victim of circumstance. She makes a deal that could very well destroy her, but with an individual who is not what he seems. I was more interested in Isadora and her path than with Zander and Callia. Those two just had too much rage and hurt between them. It really made for difficult reading. I felt more of an observer and didn't have any emotional attachment what so ever to them.

Elisabeth Naughton is a good writer, but something about Entwined didn't keep me interested. I simply wasn't engaged enough and almost couldn't make it through. There were some nice fighting scene and moments of passion between Zander and Callia, but overall, this was a read that just didn't stay with me and was quickly forgotten once I finished reading.(less)

Callia is the Kings personal healer, she’s devoted her life to duty because the only man she’s ever loved didn’t love her back. He abandoned her when she needed him most and she has her cleansing period scars and an ache for a child she lost as proof. Now her cleansing period is almost over and she’ll soon marry the man she’s been betrothed to since birth, a man she despises, but who will become the future leader of the council. Through him she might make changes her world desperately needs ar at least prevent him from moving their world back to the middle ages as he desires. So when she has to face the man who’s hurt her more than any other in the world and examine him to be Isadora’s betrothed she’ll set aside her hurt and do her duty.

Max is a ten year old boy raised by Atalanta in a life where he must kill or be killed. He survive because of a mirror, given to him by one of the Fates, which allows him to see his one true hope, the image of his real mother. He doesn’t understand why she didn’t want him, but if she’d just come for him, just give him one chance, he’d be the best son anyone could ask for. Atalanta’s goal is to kill Max’s humanity and it’s the one thing he refuses to give up. He’s never had anything in his life, but she won’t steal from him his hope.
When the lives of these three people collide, untold secrets are revealed and unheard of dangers arrive. But can they survive the dangers around them and move past the hurts destroying them to become the family they always should have been?

This second Eternal Guardians novel is as stunning as the first. While it did present a couple questions like why is it that Theron can find his soul mate anywhere, but Zander can’t and how exactly Zander can take Callia’s scars, those confusions are few and far between. What I really love about this series is that it’s so much more than a romance. With this installment Naughton brings us so much further into the political climate of Argolea. We spend almost as much time with characters outside the love story as we do with the romantic leads. There exists in this world so many intrigues and secrets that you can’t help but being sucked into their lives. There weren’t as many interactions with the Greek gods in this story as there were in the first, but Naughton still continues to interestingly twist Greek Mythology to fit her world by bringing story of the Titans and the Horae into this latest installment. Through the mythological twists and political intrigues Naughton continues to build a larger potentially explosive story are that makes this romance series on of the few readers should read in order. More than the romance, it’s the series story arc that makes these books ones not to be missed. Max, who was briefly introduced in the first novel takes up a larger role in this book and probably has the most intriguing storyline of the novel. His life is the culmination of secrets and betrayals and it’s his circumstances that pull at your heart strings the most. The well written close third person story is fast paced and loaded with action. The world is vividly described and stunningly addicting. The love story is built more on past encounters shown through memories than current events and does include sex though that’s neither a focus nor an abundance of scenes in this book. The one major sex scene though is a little disturbing, not because of what happens between the characters, but because of when. Callia and Zander have just discovered their child wasn’t still born or aborted, but is living with Atalanta, their world’s worst enemy and while they’re on earth supposedly searching for him they stop to have wild monkey sex?! Because of the when it takes a little bit of respect from the characters, their number one concern at this point should have been finding Max and making things right, not scratching a ten year itch. So while the sex isn’t a major part of the story, the scene does actually detract from the plot and would have been more beneficial to the plot at a different location in the story. However beyond that, the plot is an intense page turner from beginning to end.

Like in the first novel the characters are extremely well developed. We see both Callia and Zander’s faults, but we are also given insight into the events that made them make the choices they did. Casey and Theron are still reoccurring characters in this book, but they’re more secondary background characters in this story and Naughton relies a lot on the first novel in the series for their characterization. The other secondary characters from the first book however she continues to build and shape giving each more flesh and making each a little less of a mystery. Naughton also introduces a few new characters in this novel like the council members Lucian, Simon and Lukas and she does a wonderful job building these secondary characters with both strengths and flaws as well as providing the motivations for their actions. Her characterization skills are just are strong as her plotting, coming together to create a stunning novel.

Overall this story isn’t one to be missed. This excellent installment in the Eternal Guardians series is one I’d highly recommend to readers who enjoy paranormal romance.(less)
