Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad (Ladybug Girl)
Lulu is so excited for the Bug Squad to come over for a playdate, and she has all kinds of things planned for them to do - right down to eating cupcakes. The cupcakes are special because each one has a candle that Lulu thinks everyone should blow out at exactly the same time.

Lulu is a young girl who loves to play with her friends! She decides one day while having a playdate to name her group of friends the "Bug Squad". Ladybug Girl and her friends, Bumblebee Boy, Butterfly Girl, and Dragonfly Girl, play delightful imaginary games together in the forest. This book honestly reminds me of my childhood and all of the activities I used to love doing while playing outside with my sister or friends! It's also a great book for both genders because instead of being all about...more
This is a cute book about a young girl named Lulu and her friends. They are all great friends and part of the bug squad--a secret friends group. They have a wonderful time playing in their fort and then they come back to the picnic table where lulu's mom has given them a craft to do. But, when everyone doesn't do as Lulu says she starts to get upset with them. Then she tells everyone that they all have to blow out their candles together on the count of three, but when Kiki doesnt, Lulu blows out...more
Jackie Davis captures the pleasures and tribulations of childhood in each Ladybug Girl book. This one explores the world of the play date. Ladybug Girl, aka Lulu, has three of her friends over to play and has a vision for how she wants it to go. Inevitably someone doesn't want things to go just the way she wants, and she has to deal with the feelings of shame that come when we try to impose our will on others and frustration when things don't go the way we want them to. Davis tells this story in...more
October 4 was Jumpstart's Read for the Record Day to support literacy, and this year's book was Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad. I was able to read the story with three of my classes—fifth, third, and second grade. Third grade was the best. They enjoyed the story AND they were able to have a productive conversation about the importance of reading. Fifth graders felt like they were too old for the story and second graders didn't really get engaged in the discussion.

I picked this up because I noticed it on the NYT bestseller list. No wonder the masses are losing interest in picture books -- they're buying all the awful ones!
I imagine this book attempts to cash in on the cuteness of the Pinkalicious/Purplicious/Silverlicious phenomenon. Ladybug Girl's wings are sparkly! She's so girly, all dressed up like a fairy!

I remember liking Ladybug Girl when I first read it, but after reading Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad, I wonder if I should re-read. This seems a lot like talking down to kids, so I'm curious to see if kids relate well to this story. The conflict is quick, and quickly resolved, and the rest of the story lacks much interest. None of the kids in the Bug Squad has a personality developed through this story, and I only know LuLu's because of the other Ladybug Girl books.

Another great book in the Ladybug Girl series, this one introduces the Bug Squad (new characters Dragonfly Girl, Butterfly Girl and returning Bumblebee Boy). Lulu gets into trouble when she has her friends over for a play date. She is too bossy and it back fires on her. A sweet and poignant lesson about building new friendships.

When I saw that this was the book chosen for Read for the Record, I got a copy to send to Sophie so that she and her mom can participate. It was a cute book, but I can think of lots of others that would be a better choice. The illustrations are very lively and colorful, and I like the idea of kids dressing up as bugs, but it wasn't the most interesting of stories. Ladybug Girl is having a play date her friends, and in her mind she knows just how she wants it to go. But things don't always go as...more
The official Bug Squad party is today and everyone is coming over! Bumblebee boy, Dragonfly girl, and Butterfly girl will be in costume. They all head out to their secret play area for fun. Then it's back home to paint pictures, and have cupcakes, with little candles. Everyone should blow out their candles at the same time, but antenna get crossed, and feelings get hurt. How will the I intrepid Ladybug Girl smooth things over? It's all about friendship and understanding.

We've read several stories in the Ladybug Girl series by David Soman and Jacky Davis. They feature a young girl and her friends who form a club. They all wear bug costumes and have "special powers." Overall, it's a good story about friendship, taking turns and compromise. Our girls are starting to grow out of these stories, but we still enjoyed reading this story together.
This was the first book I've read about "Ladybug Girl." This book was this years book chosen for Jumpstart's reading campaign. This group tries to set a record each year for the largest number of people sharing reading with children (and adults). As a teacher I supported this venture, eventually even getting my whole school into the swing. There are other books in the "Ladybug Girl" series and they will be my next attempt to expand my horizons on her delightful adventures. If you're interested i...more
I had to add this book because it is Amelia's favorite book right now. I also LOVE reading it to her. It teaches imagination and friendship skills. As we read the book, I will stop and we will discuss the different characters feelings and what Amelia thinks they should do to solve their problems. I think if we lived in our old neighbor, there would be a "bug squad". Very cute book for boys or girls. There are several books starring Ladybug Girl.

This is my first time reading the Ladybug Girl series and what a wonderful book this is! Not only did my little girl fall in love with the story and Ladybug Girl, but I enjoyed reading the story to her. The story is fun, the illustrations are great and the message the story delivers is one younger kids can not only relate to, but identify with. I'm looking forward to reading more books from this series and I highly recommend picking it up!

Description: In their first official playdate, Lulu (a.k.a. Ladybug Girl) and her Bug Squad buddies demonstrate their "superpowers," which include cartwheels, running fast, and saving ants. All seems to be going well until Ladybug Girl's super enthusiasm begins to grate on the group. A gentle lesson about playing together.
The illustrations are cute and I like they are all dressed as different bugs. It is accurate in the way children play and sets a good example in a lesson with friends.

The Ladybug Girl books follow a formula but it's sincere and wholesome one. At some point in the story, Lulu will face a conflict that her alter ego, Ladybug Girl will help her overcome. This book is no different in that respect. Lulu spend a fun day with her friends but she inadvertently upsets one. She rises to the challenge and all is happily resolved in the end. Real life may not always work so smoothly, but the emphasis on perseverance should not be lost on the reader, even a young child.

It's the first official Bug Squad Playdate, and everything is going great, until Lulu blows out the candle on Kiki's cupcake. But, that is quickly solved by relighting the candle. After all, the Bug Squad sticks together though it all.

Ladybug Girl and her friends, Bumblebee Boy, Butterfly Girl, and Dragonfly Girl, play delightful imaginary games together in the forest.
I often wonder if children still play like this. I certainly hope so. Reading about children playing such fun games can’t help but encourage them to do so.
“Lulu leaps to her feet and says, ‘Follow me! Let’s play “We Can’t Touch the Ground Because It’s Hot Lava.”’”

This book was probably the most annoying of the Ladybug Girl bunch. While I did like the Bug Squad (comprised of a ladybug, a bumblebee, a dragonfly, and a butterfly), the way Lulu dominated the other children was irritating. While she did eventually learn a lesson after hurting Kiki's feelings, it almost seemed too little, too late.

Ladybug Girl gets together with Bumblebee Boy, Dragonfly Girl and Butterfly Girl to form the Bug Squad. They go out into the forest to visit their "Bug Squad Base." They travel over lava (grass) and deal with giants in their way (sunflowers). Each child has superpowers and they use to help get them through the forest.
