The first book was good. The second book was great. This third book was holyeffinbatmanfreakinamazing!! Sooooo, if my calculations are correct (and if you don't take into account that I'm terrible at math), I'm guessing that just touching the next book in the series should result in a violent, arms-flailing, dance-inspiring joygasm!!!

What a cruel, cruel ending... If I were to wait a year to find out what happens to Mac next, I'd be royally pissed right now, because as much as I liked the book, I think this kind of ending is unacceptable and disrespectful to the series' fans.

Faefever is a very dark book and it starts out dark too. I missed Mac's happy-go-lucky attitude and flirtations with Barrons in previous installments. The only relief from the doom we get in this book comes in the form of MacHalo and Druid Voice lessons....more

And ever since the Harry Potter series ended and Anita Blake turned into a creepy sort of person I’d be disinterested in meeting if she were real, there are only two of them whose publication dates I follow religiously so I can actually be at the bookstore the moment it opens on release day to buy my copy. And ever since the Harry Potter series ended and Anita Blake turned into a creepy sort of person I’d be disinterested in meeting if she were real, there are only two of them whose publication dates I follow religiously so I can actually be at the bookstore the moment it opens on release day to buy my copy. Karen Marie Moning is one of them.

I was introduced to her Highlander series a couple years ago and fell passionately in love with the characters and their happily-ever-after endings (not to mention the heart-pounding love scenes!) Her writing style is easy to read and a perfect mix of intelligence and comfortable colloquialism that makes it easy to approach without being full of typos and awkwardly structured sentences. I say that Karen Marie Moning is a romance author for the people who want some decent plot with their sex! Mix in some gorgeous men in kilts and an element of fantasy (time travel, druids, Fae Princes, some Berserkers, whatever) and you’re good to go.

All that being said, her Fever series is completely different. Faefever is the third in the series and I would strongly advise you NOT read out of order (Darkfever, Bloodfever, Faefever). Each subsequent installment of the series is closely tied in to the one before it and without that foundation, it would be very confusing. I would also categorize the first three books in this series as more “urban fantasy” than “paranormal romance” so if you need a happy ending, these dark books might leave you feeling unfulfilled, at least for now.

The main character, MacKayla Lane, is a ditzy southern belle who is forced to grow up fast. After her sister is brutally murdered while studying abroad, MacKayla (Mac for short) travels to Ireland to identify her sister’s body and get some more information. She is unwittingly sucked into an unbelievably crazy subworld of Celtic myth that includes bad fairies, druids, dark hallows, evil plots, mystery and unfulfilled sexual desires with men of indeterminate scruples. Moning’s fans have quickly learned that the author has the ability to write some unbelievably compelling cliffhangers and this installment was no different.

The things I especially liked about this particular book:
--Christian MacKelter (mmm, young druid man, I hope to see him get his own book in the Highlander series. I wouldn’t mind seeing V’lane go the way of Adam Black and get his own either but that might be a stretch!)
--the MacHalo (Mac made Barrons laugh, yay! Wow, total fangirl moment there.)
--V’lane dressing Mac in sleazy bikinis (hilarious, I could totally picture it)
--learning more about the Lord Master
--more clues about who/what Barrons is (dun, dun, dun!)

The ending killed me *sad face* and I’m OMGCAN’TWAIT for the next book and desperately wish I hadn’t discovered the series until all five had been published. So yes, my one recommendation would be that if you haven’t started this series yet but think it sounds interesting, wait until they’ve all been published unless you like being made mad crazy over a book.

I don't even understand why these books are taking over my life right now. I'm either reading these books or thinking about these books, and I'm pretty sure I'm dreaming about them too. ~~mostly about Barrons pressing me up against the wall and pinning my arms above my head with one hand.~~

I love how much Mac's character is growing, I can see, feel her changing while I'm there, watching her! Right in front of me! *points maniacally*

I just can't seem to find anything about her I don't like. I like her when she's Bookstore!Mac, I like her when she's ScrewYouBarrons!Mac, I like her when she's Hero!Mac.... And even Inventor!Mac. I reacted the same was as Barrons to her MacHalo. Priceless.

Her constant battles with Barrons are delicious, although I felt bad when he completely trashed her attempts at being nice. I understand why she wants what she wants from Barrons, but I can also understand why he doesn't want to give it to her. That doesn't mean I can't cheer them on to go at it like bunnies in front of me.

Also, this is really not the appropriate moment in the review to mention a minor but at this point, I'm barely capable of typing, because my hands keep reaching for my Kindle, but I'm growing very fond of Dani, d'aaaw, I smile every time I see her ^^

If you're looking for a story so gritty, scary, and yet real and addictive...then go RIGHT NOW and pick up all three books in this series. You won't be sorry.

Mac is torn in so many different directions in this book, it's almost painful to read. None of the decisions she must make are easy, yet every one will have titanic consequences. She's seemingly being 'courted' by three different males, each of whom wants her for her ability to sense Hallows. In "Faefever, she finds out a little bit more about each of them. There's V'lane, the death-by-sex fae who claims to want 'the Book' for his Queen to keep the walls between the worlds strong. There's the Lord Master, Mac's sister's old lover and ultimately killer, who needs the book to dissolve the walls but will keep Mac and her family safe and restore her dead sister to her with help from 'the Book'. Then there's Jericho Barrons. Every time Mac thinks she has him pegged, she discovers how little she really knows or understands him. Yet her attraction to him is always there. In Faefever, Mac finally spends some time with Christian MacKeltar--a Druid from a pretty impressive family lineage of Druids who battle to protect humanity by preserving the 'Compact' with the Fae Queen.

But in the end, it all comes down to Mac. She's the only one alive who can sense the object/s they all want. Her actions affect not just herself and other Sidhe-seers but ultimately all humanity. The real issue is: Who can Mac trust? Or maybe more accurately: Can she trust any of them?

I absolutely devoured this book. Didn't eat, didn't take a break (but did have to go to the bathroom once)! Now I'm strung out and strung up. I want to know...need to know what happens next. All I can do is wait for "Dreamfever" which is currently awaiting a release date but will likely be at least 9 months from now :( (less)

How can Moning end Faefever like that? I am totally at a loss for words. Everything within those last 50 pages happened so fast, I can barely wrap my head around it.

I found that Faefever was a little slow sometimes. Moning has a knack for building scenes up and then just when you think something great or terrible or anything remotely shocking or whatever is about to happen, she cuts it off there and you end up feeling deflated and frustrated. This happens countless times within the book and there are times when I just want to bang my head, throw this book out the window and yell, Why, Moning Why!?!

But then I go back after cooling down and keep reading, because that’s what happens when you read a Fever book. Moning is just so skilled at teasing us with little glimpses and then leaving it at that. And for that, I may cry.

Now on to the better things about this book...

Let’s face it. I read the Fever series for Barrons. And I’m sure I’m not the only female out there who feels this way. Every time I say the word “BARRONS”, mass hysteria and swooning usually follow. Every time I read the name Barrons in the book, I sit up in my chair a little straighter and devour the pages where he graces us with his presence because I feel like there’s just not enough of him. The suspense and unanswered questions are killing me, just as they are with Mac. I need some answers!

And speaking of Mac, I think she’s just as strong as she was in the previous books. She’s such a smart, patient girl. Her contacts with V’lane and Inspector Jayne are paying off and I think she’s dealing well with her grief. What I love about her is the fact that even though unexpected and dangerous things are happening all around her, she still finds the time to remember who she was before all this happened. She is still MacKayla Lane in her heart. And I just love the MACHALO scene.

To be honest, I’m kind of scared to read Dreamfever. After this rollercoaster ride, I’m afraid of what I might find in the next book. But I need some damn answers. And I need them soon.(less)

This was one hell of a ride! This series does have a rough start in the first book but I am now 100% addicted and in love with it!

I'm beginning to really adore Mac. She's grown into this very strong woman who can be badass when she wants. She's starting to really question Barrons and stops allowing him to push her around - as much. Plus I love her MacHalo invention, especially the fact that it's hot pink! Haha. But it was well thought of.

Barrons is pretty much the same: The enigma. I have a million theories about him, but the one I'm sticking with is that he's the Unseelie king. If he's not, though, I think it's who he's keeping under his garage. Dunno, I'll see in the last book. The anticipation and mystery behind him are actually incredibly fun to analyze. I do think - or hope - that he's not a villain.

V'lain is probably my favorite of all the male characters (I do love Barrons but we know nothing about him, so at this moment V'lain is much more interesting). He gives her Mexico and massages! *Swoon*

So far this book is the one with the most action and plot in the series. Halloween is just around the corner and that's the day that the walls are either coming down, or getting put back up. It's really gloomy, especially the last half. And it ends in a huge cliffhanger. So I'm very happy that I hooked myself up with the whole series before even starting it.

Probably what I enjoy most about this series is that they're not anticlimactic. The peak doesn't just fizzle out; it's exciting and full of suspense. I don't often enjoy cliffhangers because they sometimes feel as if the book is simply missing the last chapter. This wasn't the case: The cliffhanger makes sense and it feels like the end of this chapter in Mac's life. A whole new story is going to develop out of this. So yeah, I loved the ending. I had no idea what she was going to run into (view spoiler) but I had an idea Who she was going to see. He did warn her!

Faefever is the third book in the Fever series and I must conclude: I'm liking Mac less and less.
People warned me I would hate her in the first book but that she'd grow on me as the series progressed. The exact opposite seems to be happening. Sure: in the first book Mac was annoying and completely self absorbed, but she admitted to it. She came out and said she could be totally dense and insanely vain.

Well, thanks for offering that tidbit, Moning. I can't stand when authors write something horrific, but wind up pussing out by bringing the character back from the dead *cough Richelle Mead cough* create an alternate universe where no one is actually dead *ahem Stephen King ahem* or invent some other ridiculous way of satisfying fans who can't handle the bad stuff. J.K.Rowling was able to bring thousands, no millions to tears with Dumbledore's story in The Half-Blood Prince. She didn’t apologize or dwell on it ~ she simply continued with the story. As much as I hated what happened, I loved being so affected and emotionally invested in a book. If Rowling is able to write such depressing stuff for a children’s series, why can’t authors with an adult audience (and less beloved characters) let us accept their stories for what they are? It reminds me of when I was a kid and I would watch MTV for hours every day, waiting for Thriller. Loved it, couldn't get enough. Until some little boy got scared, and Michael Jackson made the decision to pull the video from the airwaves because he couldn't stand the idea of frightening someone when his intentions were to entertain. I remember being sooo pissed off that just one person ruined it for everyone else. Not to say that is the case here. But I believe that an author, or really any artist, should stand by their work. Clearly, not everyone will always be appeased. If an author feels their story needs to take a dark turn, then let it do so. Don't reassure the reader that things really aren't so bad.

So here I am, at 6am on a Saturday... been up for hours and now that I am done with Faefever I am furiously typing away online. One browser window is (obviously!) opened up to Goodreads so I can rant. The other is opened up to my local library, so I can request & put a hold on Dreamfever. *sigh*

UPDATE: 1/11/11: As with the previous two books in this series, I loved Faefever even more the second time through. Also, found myself paying attention to a lot of little details ~ now that I am aware of how much foreshadowing Moning includes in her books, passages that I thought were just interesting tidbits take on new meaning. Or do they? Damn! I guess I'll find out for sure in a few days when Shadowfever is fiiiiiiinaly released :)

Ok, WTF?

I wasn't expecting this ending. I was loving the book and then... everything got really twisted.

I hope everything solves in the next book. I am really dissapointed with what happened because it was just the last 40 pages; before that, everything was perfect.

This series will kill me with all this emotions. The tension is there all the time, then the romance, then the sadness, then fury, and this goes on and on with all the feelings you can think about.

I fell asleep. Woke up in the middle of the night and all I could think about was this damn series! So I sucked it up and read it. Like many said. Towards the end I'm thinking it's a big improvement from the first and second book. And hey, it's going good and I'm enjoying myself.

Okay, I recognize that I never wrote a review for Faefever so I'm doing it now for Tatiana since I know that she's about to start it.

In Faefever we see a change in the dynamics of Barrons and Mac's relationship. It starts to be a little more even between them as Mac wises up a little and really becomes a player in the game.

We also see more of Christian in this installment.

I both loved this book and hated it. I still love all the characters and the tension of the high-level story is building to such a climax that the next piece of straw could bring down the fall of mankind. But every good author makes you fall in love with the characters and then the author has to make bad stuff happen to them. That is what gives us a story. Wow...I can see why so many people were upset at the end of this book...although it is right up my alley. I do have to say that you knew something was coming. Poor Mac. It is just really hard to predict this series.

I am still enjoying the banter between Mac and Barrons and even Mac and V'Lane. I'm still leaning towards Barrons over V'Lane but I think it will be determined by how much Barrons is willing to let his guard down. V'Lane seems to be getting better but he is fae...more

Once upon a time there was a girl who had never even heard of the Fever series. Then a long come Goodreads and a friend who calls herself Mrs Barron's. 'poor woman is deluded' The girl told herself when Mrs B HOUNDED yes hounded her to read the series and that she'd love it & JZB. Turns out Mrs D Barron's wasn't deluded at all & she was right, the series is EPIC.
It just keeps going from strength to strength, each book draws me in deeper & I can't seem to get enough.

This 3rd installment in the Fever series is one of my favorites so far. We are in the middle of the war with the Unseelie & Seelie and us Humans, who have no clue as to the spiritual warfare occuring between our world and that which we were never suppose to see.

Third book of a Five Book Series, this was my least favorite. We learn very little. There seemed to be very little Barron's/Mac interaction in this book, and what interaction there was, was laced with violence. While I root for Mac and Barron's to have a HEA (Happy ever after) I could not help but be angry at Barron's treatment of Mac in this book.

I don't know where to begin, the end of this book has left me reeling!!

This is me...

You get the point. That must be the worst cliffhanger I've ever read. I stood there with my mouth gaping open for a full minute after reading the end of the book.

Apart from the end the book was once again awesome. Action, mysteries, discoveries, lies. The book has it all except for love/sex scenes...

Re-read by audiobook. I've read the library book too. Ending is so sad! Love the book/series!

Previous review 09/13/10 Wow! This series just gets better and better. No HEA, which I don't mind. Mac is still trying to find the dark book and still doesn't know who to trust. And even with all her planning, bad things still happen. Fantastic book/wonderful series. I'm going straight to book #4.

This is where the action really starts. The end of this book is a major cliffhanger. Make sure you have Dreamfever ready to go, I can't imagine how insane I would have been if I had to wait for Dreamfever's release. Luckily I started reading when Shadowfever was released.

This series is excellent, and this book really is the beginning of the good stuff!
