I have fond memories of this book. I have a feeling Peter could have certainly benefited (christian or no) from the serenity prayer. Perhaps he'll eventually pick it up at a meeting of Fudgaholics Anonymous.
Blume's humor and ability to speak to deeply-rooted juvenile issues (such as being utterly ignored) keep her firmly planted at the pinnacle of authors writing for young readers. When the mood strikes me and if there's a copy handy I'll read just the last page of this book. I walk...more

When I first read this book as a kid in grammar school I really enjoyed it. I think I just liked how it went through a kids day. Funny things happen, siblings cause trouble, and life goes on. My sons enjoyed reading it in their free time.
But as an adult rereading it I didn't enjoy it as much. I have read so many other children's books that I liked so much more that this book just kind of fell flat. As a homeschooling mom I won't place it on any literature lists but just as something ...more

I finally read my first Judy Blume book. I can't believe it took me so long to get to one. And what a great choice. I can't wait to read more. Amazing to think the book is thirty-six years old. Same as my sister.
There is a boy named Peter. He has a little brother named Fudge. Peter has a mom and a dad. Peter has two freinds named Jimmy and Sheila. Peter's teacher is Mrs. Hawer. In the end, Peter gets a dog and names him turtle, to remind him of Dribble. Who killed Dribble? Fudge ate him. Peter's aunt was having a baby. So Peter's mom left to see the new baby. Peter and Fudge had to come to there dad's office because Peter cannot watch Fudge at the park. Once Peter had to watch Fudge because P...more
I read this with my 4th grade class every year and I never get tired of it! Even though published in the 1970's it stands the test of time. I found it funny when I read it at age 10, still funny reading it as an adult to my class, and even funnier now that I have a 3 year old son who could easily double as Fudge Hatcher if they ever made it into a movie. My 12 year old says it was her favorite book she ever read in elementary school and my 8 year old just experienced Fudge for the first time ...more

This book was first given to me from my second grade teacher and it has been one of my favorites ever since. When reading it as an adult I was able to appreciate the relationship between the two brothers and between Peter and his friend Jimmy Fargo. The events that take place between the two brothers are hysterical. Peter's little brother Fudge as he refers to him, is always causing Peter trouble, embarrassment, or anger. At the end of the book when Fudge swallows Peter's turtle Dribble was one ...more
Picked this up for my voraciously reading 3rd grade daughter, who seems to enjoy 1st person young adult readers, and even shares younger-sibling frustrations with the protagonist, Peter. This book (and the next, SuperFudge) were the Harry Potter of my own elementary days. I still recall the long waits on the reserve list at the school library!
Anyway - the read did not stand the test of time the way I was hoping. I've been struggling to decide whether this quality about the interaction...more

I really enjoyed reading this book because it was funny with wacky and scenes that you can actually imagine in your head. I would recomend this book to a fourth grader beacause oviousley it says tales of the FOURTH grade nothing. And its just really fun and wacky and it has a scene with alot of blood in it. Also the pictures just go through my mind as if i was there. It's cool when you just see nothing but like a big movie screen in your head. Also because your like multi-tasking, reading, and...more
This week’s book is Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing, a favorite of mine from childhood and I’ll wager it’s one of yours as well. If you’re one of the few who managed to grow up without reading this book, I’m sorry. That’s so sad. Hurry up and read it to your kids. You’ll be glad you did. I found I loved this book even more reading it as an adult. As a writer, reading this book is the equivalent of a semester in an MFA program and I picked my copy up for two bucks. They won’t even let you hang ...more
"I wish Fudge had never been born, I thought. Everything good always happens to him! If he had to be born I wish he could be nine or ten-like me. Then Mr. Vincent wouldn't want him to be the one to ride the Toddle-Bike in his commercial."
A little rascal for a younger brother is what Peter perceives his brother Fudge to be. Despite Fudge's rather obnoxious antics, Peter feels that everyone adores Fudge regardless. However, Peter would prefer Fudge to be his age so that he ...more

Surprisingly I have never read this book, but when I stumbled upon the Birth Year Reading Challenge, this went to the top of my list. Having won the Young Reader's Choice Award in 1975, it was a shoe in.
What can you say, it was written by Judy Blume. It is bound to be good, if not great. Peter is a fourth grader, through and through. Blume's ability to capture children as themselves, and not seem like an adult writing a child, is astounding. She captures the simplicity of thei...more

Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing is about a boy named Peter who has a brother named Fudge that makes trouble for him always. This book is about siblings constantly fighting but in the end, they learn that they have to live with each other. Reading along you find that Peter is seeking attention from his parents since they only seem to pay attention to his brother and his brother is only two years old so he does not know much and needs the attention from their parents. The tone of the story is so...more
As far as kids books go, this one is way up there. I love reading about all of fudge's antics. I happened to have both kids with me at the library the other day when I pulled this off the shelf. I asked them if they had read it thinking that surely they had, but neither one of them did remember reading it. I think this book was read to me when I was in gradeschool, but I had almost no recollection as I read it through today. It is only a 3.3 on the AR reading scale, which is disappointing, ...more
My book is called Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. It’s about a boy who’s in the fourth grade and he has a little brother named Fudge. In the beginning he went to his friend’s birthday party. The main character’s name is Warren Hatcher. His friend’s name was Jimmy Fargo and all the people who were at the party had a contest. It was guess how many jelly beans were in the jar. The person who won was Peter Warren Hatcher. HE guessed 38 jellybeans, but there were really 423 and he was ...more
Trying to figure out where he belongs, Peter Hatcher feels unloved by his parents and wants to know what he can do to get their attention and the same amount of love that they have for his little brother, Fudge. From getting to eat lamb chops when the rest of the family eats something else, to always getting his way, Fudge seems to be ruining Peter life. But, for Peter, the final nail in the coffin of not liking his little brother comes at the end of the book when Peter comes home from school ...more
I remember my year 5 teacher reading this to us and absolutely loving it - the story of little Fudge and his innocence slash mischevious ways, all told from the viewpoint of is older brother, Peter. This is a brilliant story that children can relate to - particularly the way Fudge is always asking questions, the things he does that keep him amused and the way that no matter how much Peter gets annoyed with his little brother, he still loves him deep down and wants to look after him.

As a child, I remember laughing out loud at this book and just being appalled by Peter and Fudge's parents.
As an adult, I laughed on the inside and was just appalled by Peter and Fudge's parents.
This was a engaging read to share with my kids this summer. We listened to it in the car and found ourselves sitting in parking lots still listening rather than hopping out and doing our errands. As a parent, I enjoyed often stopping the CD and asking the kids what they thought ...more

Been reading the Fudge series with the kids. Both Miss nearly 7, and Master 4 enjoyed them immensely. Miss nearly 7 relates to the serious big brother Peter, who is often left mortified and infuriated by his little brother Fudge's antics and outbursts, while Fudge makes Master 4 feel like an angelic little boy in comparison. After all he would never smear food all over a restaurant, throw a massive tantum in a shoe shop, try and fly off the top of a jungle gym and end up knocking out his front t...more
This was read to me by my morbidly obese 2nd grade teacher Mrs. Rossman. She was on Weight Watchers, and consequently made our class go on 'walks' every single day, sometimes multiple times a day, in order for her to lose some of her fatness.*
That school year we read every single Super Fudge book. And now to this day, whenever I pass by the pork chops in the meat section at the grocery, I think of 2nd grade, and Mrs. Rossman and how the older brother loved sucking ketchup off of his ...more

Do you have a younger brother or sister? If you do, then you will love this book by Judy Blume. It has illustrations in every chapter and is the first book in a series about a kid named Peter.
Each chapter tells a funny story about Peter and his 2-year-old brother, Fudge. Fudge really drives Peter crazy because he gets all the attention and makes Peter feel like a “nothing.” For example, in one chapter, Fudge thinks he can fly and jumps off of the playground equipment at the park....more

I thinked this novel about a brother to brother life, is very amusing. The older brother, peter, cant seem to do anything without his little troublmaker of a brother ruining it. This story remined me of my family because everything i do... my siblings have to be involved and end up changing the plans. Having a kindergartener as a sibling is crazy, but its normal.

I remember having a couple teachers in elementary school who were crazy about Judy Blume. And I'm pretty sure I even read a couple of her books. Recently I thought I'd give her another try. I was pleased with this one, although like the Lois Lowry books, I found myself getting a little antsy. There's only so much "little kid behavior" that you can smile at. After a few CDs of it you're starting to ache for characters that behave rationally and use four-syllable words. Still, Judy...more

I just finished listening to this audiobook with my daughter in the car. I loved it as much as I did as a kid. Blume gets how it feels to be a frustrated older sibling who's left on the side because s/he's past the cute stage. Today, Fudge would be diagnosed with ADHD. I didn't understand how a stay-at-home mom couldn't keep a better eye on this three-year-old. Poor older brother Peter has to be the responsible one most of the time.

Yaya: I remember when Fudge ate the turtle, it was a bad thing. I remember when at the birthday Peter thought that he wanted a goldfish, but instead a bottle of a turtle came. Fudge was not a good little brother because he wanted to touch the bears. He did not listen to his parents. Remember when he took the stamps and put all over the suitcase and he put one in the middle and said, "all gone"? Fudge got lots of toys.

This was an amazingly good read for me and my 8 year old daughter who read it to me. Usually books for new readers are sickeningly sweet, or a real snooze, but this has a sharp edge of reality that I really enjoyed. The protagonist, Peter, is lovable and witty and annoyed with his younger brother, Fudge, who gets all the attention. Peter's voice is true throughout and I genuinely felt sorry for the kid.

I haven't read this book for years, but found it in the audio book section and had to listen to it. The author does a good job reading it, though I am turning into an audio book snob and like when there are more distinct voices. I laughed at the same places that I did when I was a kid. Since Tim's 2 right now I also had a different perspective on how the mom handled Fudge. I always thought she was a softie and got mad at her along with Peter, but now I think I may have done some of the same ...more
