The new novel in the #1 New York Times-bestselling series.

Technology may be different in 2060 New York, yet the city is still a place of many cultures and great divides. But as ever, some murders receive more attention than others-especially those in which the victim is a prominent businessman, found in his Park Avenue apartment, tied to the bed-and strangled- with cords...more

A Hitchcockian feel not everyone will like.

When Eve is called to a homicide on Park Avenue, she finds herself in the bedroom of Thomas Anders, sports fanatic and the head of Anders Worldwide. Sixty-one, he, like his father before him, ran a top enterprise of sporting-goods turned into more; several cities set up to help underprivileged children with sporting-goods to play sports. Unfortunately, Anders’s life was cut short. His body was found by his House Manager (housekeeper); each arm and leg t...more

Another solid entry in the series. There seems to be two approaches with this series. A) Reveal the guilty party or parties early (about one third of the way through the book) and the remainder is how Dallas captures them and proves them guilty. B) A slower build up to the reveal (about two thirds of the way through the book) with a few red herrings thrown in, allowing the reader to figure out whodunit for themselves.

This book takes the first approach. While that is fine, I'd rather be challenge...more

This twenty sixth book in the "In Death" series (or thirty first... if you count the novellas and Remember When, where the story of a crime begins in our time by Nora Roberts and the mystery is solved in the future during the second half of the book written as J.D. Robb) was just as easy to gobble up as all of the rest.
It's set three days before spring, in late March of 2060 but it's still very cold in futuristic New York City... reminds me of the winter we are having this year near Chicago.

Maybe it's because I've read about 22 of these in a row, but the "spark" is starting to die a bit. GASP! I mean, I still LOVE these books, but I feel like the last few haven't had enough at stake emotionally for the main characters. The conflict in their relationship really drove the first dozen or so. I'm hankering for some head-butting between the two leads so they can "make up" after, hehe. :)

I really love this series. However, the last couple of books haven't been up to her high standards. Although, I do have to say, this one had one of the better mysteries. Normally, the mystery is secondary for me. The relationship between Roarke and Eve is wonderful. One of the other bright spots is how she develops all the surrounding characters as well. Peabody, McNab, Mira, Feeney, and so on.

However, I have been hoping they would do a little more the main couples to progress them. Maybe that'...more

Strangers in Death is the latest in a long line of Eve Dallas books. I was fanatically devoted to this series until a few years ago; as a matter of fact, even when I lost all enthusiasm for Nora Roberts' formulaic trilogies and re-issued oldies, I still had the In Death books on my autobuy list. Then Roberts aka Robb dropped the ball entirely and staleness crept in. Instead of "autobuy" it became "when I can't find anything else to read." I mean, really, after 26 full-length novels and a handful...more

I'm a big fan of JD Robb's In Death series! Each murder mystery may be resolved in each story, but the characters have evolved from book to book, so this is definitel a series to be read in chronological order. I also love that it takes place about 50 years in the future!

Lt. Eve Dallas's latest homicide case involves a prominent businessman, found in his Park Avenue bedroom, tied up and strangled in his bed by black velvet ropes. As she invesigates and learns about the victim, she discovers the...more

Lt. Eve Dallas of the New York Police and Security Department is called to the scene of a murder where it appears philanthropist Thomas Anders died during a kinky sexual encounter. Evidence suggests the victim was sedated at the time of his demise and a lapse in the security system’s recordings signifies this was not an accidental death. Eve quickly hones in on a suspect but can find nothing to connect the killer to Anders at the time he died. But this doesn’t stop the lieutenant, who uses every...more

The latest in the Eve Dallas futuristic crime series written under Nora Roberts' mystery pen name. This was another great entry. I'm always surprised that she manages to keep my interest from book to book, but she does. In this one, Eve is trying to find the murderer of an extremely wealthy man who died in a shocking manner. Or did he? The deeper she gets into the investigation, the more Eve begins to question the tableau of the murder scene. She is also trying to assist two fellow officers in t...more

Strangers in Death is a futuristic police mystery. Set in 2060 in New York. Eve Dallas is a Lieutenant in the homicide division. I gathered from the references throughout the book that this book was part of a series although I haven't read any of the previous ones. Sometimes the references were a smidgen confusing but the book can definitely stand on it's own. A wealthy man has been murdered in a secure penthouse with no one in the apartment and no signs of breakin, however, the security CD's ha...more

It's another day in Eve's world and another murder has taken place, this time to a prominent business man, one well liked by the business community. there are almost no leads, but Eve has her instincts and they tell her who the killer is from the get go. This time I both agreed with her logic but needed her to prove it & boy did she prove it.

I have my issues with Eve (i'll share those another time) but I do love her world. Her secondary characters truly help to make the book, i personally wi...more

I liked it very much. It wasn't perfect, but quite good, that is, for the kind of book it is, it fills the bill very well. Interesting, engaging, fast-paced, believable. Eve is a bit "hard-assed" and bitchy, but she gets the job done. Don't go to her for sympathy or understanding, though. I like that she's intelligent, doesn't care about fashion or money. The plot is slightly convoluted, but in a good way. I want my characters to be as successful as Eve Dallas, but not as mean.

Thomas Anders, ric...more

Very few authors have the ability to suck me right in. I sat down with the book and I completely forget about the time. I started reading it in the evening and think it must have been around two in the morning when J came into the living room and told me to go to bed. He took the book away from me...yep, took it away. I had to go to sleep. Anyway, I finished it the this morning.

Like any series, there are books that are really good and other that just don't do it for me. And this one fits in the...more

In the New York of 2060, Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Detective Baxter have both caught cases which have no apparent leads. Dallas knows in her guts who murdered Thomas Anders, but her suspect has an iron clad alibi. Friends and colleagues of Anders describe him as a good-natured, generous, and conservative fellow. The kind of man anyone wants as a friend, and golf-partner. Anders' personality seems totally at odds with the scandalous and risque tableau in which his corpse was discovered. After a r...more

I read the In Death series randomly and not through the series itself. Nevertheless, I judge the In Death series from how it entertained me, how the murder was done and who the killer is.

The Strangers In Death ran the same course as that of the movie Strangers on the Train, a twist which surprised me and made the novel so much more enjoyable.

The characters were their usual self, endearing and charming in their own way. The thing I love the most about this novel is its shock value, which are pers...more

Since I resumed reading the In Death series, I've not strictly adhered to the order, instead randomly selecting.

Likes: Charles and Louise's appearance and the Eve/Roarke "discussion" about money, otherwise the case was mildly interesting.

Dislikes: Too numerous to mention. Get Roarke out of Eve's work life and put him back in his own element.

Wish: Please kill off a major character(s)! How about a 2 book case? Stop with the hardcover editions.

I run out of things to say about this series. It's not the mysteries so much as the characters that bring me back again and again. I just love Eve and Roarke and the magical chemistry they have with each other. I love a couple that can do that verbal banter thing. *g*

Roarke points out that Eve takes the current case a little differently. Instead of being consumed with the case, she's fired up because she knows who did it, and she just has to prove it.

On the personal front, wedding bells will rin...more

As usual I really love these books. The characters are realistic and the crimes are inventive. My only beef is that the titles have been giving away the mysteries lately. The book title two books ago gave it away. I figured out the killer on this right away because of the title. It was amusing that the movie referenced in the book was how I deduced the plot. It was still interesting to see how Eve makes her case because she too knew who the killer was from the beginning. The supporting character...more

Terrible. Had to read it for book club but struggled through it. Horribly written. For some bizarre and completely unnecessary reason it is set in the future - only it is a future that is more technologically backwards than the world we live in today. It's like the future imagined by some IQ challenged 50 year-old in the 1980's. I guess supposed to be a mystery but not a single twist, run or unexpected event. Just slogging though a not terribly interesting investigation with some completely grat...more

Does every murder tell the story of how they died? Does the murder even tell you the story of the person? In this case is sort of does and it sort of doesn't.

A well known business is found dead in his house...tied to his bed....strangled...with cords of black velvet and plenty other strange things.

But something is not adding up. And Dallas is the only one that sees it. Everyone...including the Chief of Police's Wife is telling Dallas her gut is wrong. Will Dallas listen? Or there is a connectio...more

It was a nice surprise when my mother brought me this book from a yard sale. I have read it before but its a good one. Im a big fan on this particular series but there a few things that might have someone unfamilar go " Who's that?" I like this one because alot of my favorite secondary characters get a cameo or at the very least mentioned. The mystery was a good one. Dallas, the hero, suspects who the killer is but she has to find proof.

Rereading this book makes me want to go read the rest of t...more

Love this series - never gets old!

In this book, Eve is after the killer of a seemingly kind and generous elderly philanthropist. Seemingly, because the method of his death appears to suggest that he had kinky sexual tendancies, and that something just went wrong during an encounter.

As Eve investigates, however, she can't find any proof of this and becomes suspicious that something else is going on.

This book was pretty much a straight-up investigation of the murder, with less of the character dev...more

Doing a 180 after the last lackluster Eve Dallas mystery, Robb takes us back to New York 2060 when Eve tags a new case. Thomas A. Anders, the sportswear king, is found dead in his bed, naked and apparently in the throes of something pretty kinky when he died. Something about the scene is off, however. Anders was drugged up to his eyeballs and passed out cold when he choked to death, and the security disks show that his killer left the scene well before he died. Eve’s investigation doesn’t turn u...more

About Strangers in Death, I've got nothing special to say.
It wasn't a great book. In fact it wasn't easy to cruise the pages of this book.
Nonetheless there were some things I did enjoy. Particularly:

Charles and Louise. It was nice to see the two figure things out. It was an emotional scene and also an inspiring one. Charle's attitude was honourable and the fact that he took the time to change his life for Louise shows a great character and an even greater personality.

Eve and Roarke. I will al...more

In case you were wondering, yep, Strangers in Death is still upholding the ongoing formula of the In Death series. Fortunately, as I have observed before, it continues to be an entertaining and well-executed formula, which goes a long way to keeping me coming back and reading each new installment.

This time around we have Dallas and Peabody investigating a murder that has no apparent perpetrator--for which all signs indicate that the most likely culprit must surely have been a stranger, because n...more

Strangers in Death is the latest in J. D. Robb's popular series. The book opens with Lieutenant Eve Dallas, a homicide detective, at the murder scene of Thomas Anders, a prominent sporting goods businessman. It looks like a kinky sex game gone wrong. The scandal and sensationalism will surely set tongues a-wagging.

Eve slowly untangles the scene as it just doesn't add up. Security tapes are missing and how did the murderer get in and strangle Anders with no struggle? Ava, his wife, is in the Cari...more

“Why doesn't it bother her? Seriously, it doesn't. She's not putting on a front. She's in a serious relationship with a guy who has sex with other women for a living, and it doesn't matter to her."

"I married a cop." Roarke smiled at her. "We all have our levels of acceptance. He was an LC when they met, just as she was a doctor, and one who often works in dangerous areas of the city."

She shot him the same easy smile. "So...if I'd been an LC when we met, you wouldn't have any problem with me banging other guys. Professionally."

"None at all, as I'd kick your ass and murder all of them. But that's my level of acceptance.”
