Jadi kuganjar bintang 3.5.
Walaupun tergolong tebal, The Novice tidak membosankan.
Tidak menjijikkan malah g dukung aja, tapinya sempet membuat g berfikir kalau nanti...more

A surprisingly good fantasy title. The plot reminds me quite of Harry Potter (i.e. protagonist in school of wizardry, unusual circumstances of birth, befriended by the school headmaster), but the plot is much more suspenseful and interesting. And none of that ANGST-CRAWLING-IN-MY-SKIN rubbish that one usually sees in this genre of stories.
Mature plot, snappy writing, interesting characters. What more could one ask for?

I am moderately satisfied with the series, though not with the first book. What I think about each of the three books: 1) "The Guild": almost half of the book is spent relating the tentatives of Sonea, supported by a friend and the Thieves, to conceal herself from the Guild magicians: I think it is a waste of time and energy, because every reader undestands since a few pages that she's going to be captured and instructed from the Guild (it is impossible not to undestand it: the story is related...more
At first I liked this book. Things were...moving forward. Very soon, however I became bored and frustrated. Why? Because of the whole bully business that goes for the ENTIRE book. It never stops. It just goes on and on and on. I really didn't know what I hated more, the fact that Sonea was acting like a punching bag that entire time, or the fact that Canavan devoted so much time to this trivial subplot. By the time Sonea finally shows some teeth, it's already too late and the feeling of victory...more

How PATHETIC did Sonea turn out to be in this book?
Again, the author drags part of the story, aka where Sonea gets bullied by some of the rich, spoilt novices, out for pretty much 2/3 of the book, needlessly I may add.
I only gave this two stars because throughout the whole book, whilst the style of writing is still appreciable, I found myself completely aghast at the pathetic, lacking in backbone and self-doubting creature that she turned Sonea into!

Warning: Rant
I love the characters, especially the main one, but it really bothers me how focused the author is of the different "races". Each character is described primarily with ethnicity and usually follow a given pattern of behaviour. I would accept it if they were different species, like dwarves, humans and elves, but I don't buy it that people just over the mountain are so vastly different in skin color or mentality. And that they haven't mixed more.
I hope this will have some kind of sign...more

The second installment in the Black Magician trilogy is a big improvement, actually.
While Canavan’s writing style is still not the best, this time around the characters seems a lot more inspiring and the overall themes are darker and more serious. We have some pretty disturbing portraits of school bullying, teacher negligence, classism, homophobia and general bigotry. And there’s this beautiful theme of self-acceptance in a world of hatred. Despite the darker tone the book never stops being… en...more

This is a review of the overall series, and I'm struggling a bit with what to write without making this a spoiler review, but here are a few thoughts:
- I enjoyed the series, but I'm putting it firmly in the "good not great" category (hence the 3 star rating). As so often happens with YA fiction, it just doesn't have the full depth or the originality that would move it up a notch or two, which is unfortunate since there are definitely books out there which prove YA fiction need not be shallow or...more

Definitely enjoyed the 2nd book in the installment much more than the first. The plot and the mystery around high magic really pulled me in and wouldn't let me put the book down.

Watching Sonea deal with the discrimination from the students and teachers at the guild was heart-wrenching.
The novice of the title is the young Sonea whom we met in the first volume of this trilogy, The Magicians’ Guild. She has overcome her anxiety about joining the Guild following an exhausting search for her when her burgeoning powers threatened to endanger both herself and the inhabitants of Kyralia’s capital Imardin. Having been reluctantly accepted into the Guild by the magicians she is then subjected to concerted bullying by a cohort of students led by Regin who are persuaded that, as a former...more
It still had the same plot problems as the first book and the world lost some of its interest, possibly just by not being as new and possibly because it was no longer a description of poverty in the slums.
However, there were some very strong, well done, if often predictable points. I think what bothers me about the plot is less the simplicity than the unevenness. Sometimes the plot drags for chapters with no advance and sometimes climaxes are skipped.

Tre stelline e mezzo abbondanti.

Zweiter Teil einer Trilogie bei der mir der erste Teil super gefallen hat – was will ich da noch mehr?!
Sprache, Ausdruck:
Die Reise von Dannyl i...more

Er bringt...more
Following on from the closing stages and the Epliogue of The Magicians Guild, The Novice heavily concentrates on Sonea's new life as a Novice in the Guild - her lessons, her guardianship, first love and coping with the bullying from her contemporaries due to her heritige, especially Regin who you can't help but think is really Draco Mallfoy. This is lightly interspersed with the backgrounds of the other main characters introduced in The Magicians Guild as well as the investigations regarding uns...more
It's entirely possible that I was just in the wrong mood to read this book. The first one in the series was ... okay, I guess. I thought of it as brain-dead yahoo-fair. Bathtub reading, if you know what I mean. Simplistic and derivitive but harmless. I thought I saw where the author was going and was willing to follow her to the next book, should the opertunity land in my path. Well, it did and I did and here we are. Unimpressed.

The Novice, the second installment of The Black Magician Trilogy, continues the story of Sonea, a young girl who, after discovering she possesses strong magical powers, is accepted into the Guild of Magicians in order to learn how to properly control her magic and study its various uses.

The second book in the trilogy, The Novice, as the title suggests, follows Sonea’s training as a magician. Her background as a slum dweller makes it difficult for her to fit in with the other novices, who take to picking on her. In the meantime, one of her allies, Lord Dannyl, is promoted to Guild Ambassador and sent on a secret mission to trace a journey the High Lord made years ago. It is hoped Lord Dannyl might uncover the origins of some of the High Lord’s dubious activities.

This book was definitely more exciting than the first, as predicted. It was much more exciting and a lot more seemed to happen. It still could have easily knocked off 20-30 pages or even more, but it didn't seem to suffer from the tedium that the first book often displayed in the first half.
This book also deals with some fairly controversial issues. Bullying, for one. There were many times that I cringed and fumed at how much bullying went on. And as frustrating as it was to read, especially whe...more

SUMMARY:
"Even if a magician's powers surface of their own accord, he will soon be dead if he does not gain the knowledge of how to control them." Canavan has delivered again in this, the second installment of The Magicians' Guild trilogy. As usual, the book is a well written adventure that should entertain readers from pre-teens to adults who enjoy YA fiction. There is just enough mention of magicians and their magical abilities to keep it a main focus of the story without overtaking it. This book introduces a new 'side' story, centered on Dannyl, as well as continuing Sonea's story. The further along I get into this story, the harder I'm...more

Okay, so Canavan does a great deal better in this book than the first installment of the trilogy. While I have a few minor gripes, I was impressed with how much more quickly this story was able to take off running. Sonea's character is pushed and prodded and evolved in this work to a degree that she hasn't been previously.
It was very refreshing to have as a focus a main character with great power, but without the "Superman" complex of just trouncing everything with brute force. She has successe...more

I felt that this book was much better than the first in the series. The storyline is still very pacey and full of excitement (sometimes I find the middle of a trilogy a little slow), I kept wanting to know what would happen next to all of the characters.
I really felt for Sonea as she was bullied by her classmates, and was intrigued at Dannyl's findings. I also really liked the character development of both characters - Sonea becoming stronger and more able to stand up for herself, Dannyl learni...more
