Whether you want to bake a quick batch of oatmeal cookies on a rainy day or you’d like to impress your dinner guests with a mouthwatering apple strudel that will leave them breathless and begging for the recipe, you’re going to love “The Joy of Vegan Baking.” Colleen Patrick-Goudreau is well known as a Renaissance woman – chef, entrepreneur, teacher, writer, activist, podcaster, public speaker and more. She’s so busy I’m frankly amazed she had the time to devote so much care to this beautiful co...more

This is an excellent, traditional, baking book with something for everyone. I have made 12 recipes so far, some of them multiple times and all have turned out very well. You would never guess, (and most people never do) that these recipes contain no dairy or eggs.

My favourites from top to bottom:

Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
Chocolate Cake
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Apple Cake
Cinnamon Rolls
Peanut Butter Cookies
Butterscotch Pudding
Lemon Bars
Cinnamon Coffee Cake
Strawberry cupcakes
Chocolate Mousse

I generally read my cookbooks from cover to cover, but I picked up this one for an initial cursory look only and couldn’t put it down and ended up reading the whole thing in one sitting.

Not hyperbole: This is an amazing and remarkable baking book, for experienced bakers and novices alike. This cookbook has everything needed to successfully create delicious baked goods. It’s also a beautiful book, containing many mouthwatering photos of the completed recipes.

Great vegan book too. Colleen Patrick...more

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Colleen's recipes. This was actually my first vegan cookbook. She provided many pictures, which I love and sometimes need if I'm going to be sold on a recipe. She gives excellent little tid bits of information. My only gripe would be the cost and complexity. Every recipe that I did try was super delicious, but often required too much money for me or was too complex. I shell out quite a bit of money on my food to begin with, and cut all other expenses, because quality food is i...more

WOW!!!! Probably my favorite vegan cookbook. Everything I have made from this book has been absolutely amazing. My boyfriend and I have a special fondness for the Apple Cobbler :). It also has lots of tips for vegan cooking which are very useful. I recommend book this for everyone, vegan or non-vegan!

Finally, a book that tells you just how delicious vegan baking can be. It's got all your traditional favorites! I have made multiple recipes for non-vegans and they love everything and have bought the book. Open your mind and your mouth and your tummy will thank you!

The thing about this cookbook that rubbed me the wrong way is that most of the recipes call for Ener-G Egg Replacer. I feel like that's an admission that these recipes are somehow lacking in something that non-vegan recipes aren't. A good vegan recipe should work around the lack of eggs without Ener-G, as there are at least 10 things you can use as egg replacers that aren't called "Egg Replacer."

Also, I have made some recipes in this book and the recipes themselves are written poorly. Things li...more

I love Colleen Patrick-Goudreau, and I love this cookbook. I've made several things from this book - cinnamon rolls and vegan cheesecake anyone?? - and they have all turned out great and had rave reviews from friends.

One of the things I love about Colleen's cookbooks are the little knowledge tid-bits she scatters throughout. Whether it is about ingredient quality, how to do a cooking technique, a tip, or a fact about animal welfare, I always find something interesting interspersed throughout th...more

Yum - beautiful photos and fail-safe recipes. This cookbook is a hit!

A few recipe reviews --

Apple Pie: The recipe for the filling was spot on, and I loved the suggestion to sprinkle cinnamon sugar on the top crust. That said, the initial baking temperature (425 degrees) was too hot and nearly burned the crust, and not cooking the apples first resulted in a pie with a lot of air inside the top crust because the apples shrunk during baking.

Apple Cobbler: It's hard to make a bad apple cobbler, but...more

Good basic explanations of ingredient choices and options, including recipes for making rice milk, almond milk, and cashew milk. Several egg replacers are explained, along with recommendations for which baked goods they work best in. Several recipes use Ener-G Egg Replacer. A standard range of baked goods (breads, cookies, pies, scones, etc.) as well as puddings, sorbets, smoothies, and candies. These recipes are not for health food - they are for making decadent treats for people who choose not...more

I can't rave enough about this cookbook. It is hands down the best baking book ever!!! I get wild raves about everything that I make from this cookbook. Not a single person I've baked for from this book is vegan. My neighbor appears at my door when she hears that I'm making the Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins. Really the very best baking book. Whether you are Vegan, Lacto/Ovo or Hard Core Carnivore- does not matter. This book rocks!

This book catches a lot of flack for using Ener-G Egg Replacer in so many recipes. While I would prefer recipes not call for this specialty ingredient, in all honesty it's not really that big of a deal. The most important thing for me is that every single recipe I've made from this book has been absolutely delicious. So is Ener-G necessary for vegan baking? Of course not. But does it stop these recipes from tasting great? Not a bit.
Didi
I love the recipes in this book. They do use more oil and fats than I normally find acceptable, but when you consider that these goodies are occasional treats and not every day munchies, the price of a bit more fat is worth it. I look forward to using these for holidays and special occasions. The chocolate chip cookies are exceptional, by the way!
Lisa
I give this wonderful book 4.5 stars. It is an essential component of the savvy vegan's kitchen, in my opinion. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it relies quite a bit on vegan margarine, which is not my favourite ingredient. There are, however, plenty of excellent recipes which don't use this product. Highly recommended!

We are not a vegan household but we are a household of food allergies making traditional baking challenging if not impossible.
I find every single recipe in this book easy and delicious. Very few of these recipes require random hard-to-find ingredients.
I recommend this book for any baker to keep in their pantry.

I'm hoping to get Christmas money so I can buy this book. The first 30 pages give an excellent explanation of how to replace dairy and eggs with vegan alternatives. Last night I made the Mexican Wedding Cookies and, of course, had to taste-test one - wow. You would never know they were vegan.
Katie
This is amazing! I'm quite new vegan girl (8 months) and I had no idea I can make so delicious things without eggs, milk and butter. But believe me, with this book you can do anything you want. I recommend this beautiful book with gorgeous photos with all my heart :-).
Becky
I love The Vegan Table, and the few recipes I have made so far from The Joy of Vegan Baking have been very good as well. My non-vegetarian friends and family can't tell the difference between these and the desserts I used to make.
Ela Moreno
I have made a good portion of the recipes in this book and only one (the coffee cake) hasn't turned out. The book is great and supplies me with all sorts of "there's no way that's vegan" items to discuss with my coworkers.
Calista
I know she says that she thinks dessert should be dessert, but some of these just use way too much sugar and butter. I've made some seriously delicious recipes from here, though, like German apple cake! Yum yum!
Toni
I've only tried a few of the bread recipes, which are inherently vegan anyway, and they have turned out absolutely perfect. I've had better luck with these than with Julia Child's bread recipes, believe it or not!
Sarah
Everything I bake from here turns our amazing, even with gluten-free flour substitutions. I especially like the section at the beginning where they say how, when, and what to substitute for eggs and dairy.
Leigh
Joy of Vegan Baking has graced my pantry shelf for going on five years now, and it is the most-used, best-loved cookbook in my kitchen. The book falls open to chocolate chip cookies, and the gingersnap and pancake pages are stained from repeated viewings. Even my non-vegan friends clamor for my cookies, and Joy is my secret. I don't know what possessed me to give a four-star review. The error has been corrected.

My improvisational cooking style tends toward reinventing the wheel. Joy of Vegan Ba...more

she uses a lot of earth balance, kind of felt like she took your standard cookbook and changed the wording to make it all vegan. I do really like her podcast, but I am glad I didn't buy this book.
Kaecey
Even if you're not vegan, this book is a true find. Her tips are wonderful and those alone are worth the book. The cookies are fab and even work when turned gluten-free. One of my favs.
Rachel Frank
My favorite vegan cookbook! Who doesn't love baking and sweet treats? The book has a comprehensive overview of vegan baking and then a wide range of recipes from breakfast to frostings.
Davida
Super awesome so far:

Have made banana chocolate chip muffins, ginger muffins, and two variations of waffles.

AND I'm using up that big bag of flax seeds and sticks of Earth Balance I never thought I'd use.

I'm learning a lot about vegan baking and the recipes are easy and delicious!

I am LOVING this book! Everything I have made has been outstanding. Really, really moist which I find to be the most difficult when I bake. The Chocolate Chip Cookies are AMAZING! My husband has stated many times that they are the best cookies he's ever had period...and, I'm not even a very good baker! My mom gave me this book for my birthday and is getting her own copy, since I've been so excited about it.

This is one of my very favorite cookbooks and perhaps the most consistently used. Every recipe I've tried is simple and delicious and a big hit at home and the office. I've taken a number of vegan treats to share with non-vegans and they've all been a huge hit and a pleasant surprise to those who thought vegans were only allowed to eat grass and hay. ;-)

The recipes are easy to follow and most of the ingredients can be found at your neighborhood grocery store. The book is also filled with nutriti...more

A must have for vegan baking!

A bit hit or miss for some things but the crumble, cobbler and chocolate chip scones are fabulous.
