Viscount Vagabond (Regency Noblemen #1)
FROM DISTRESS TO DISASTER
Catherine Pelliston simply would not abide by her father's wishes and marry the slovenly Lord Browdie. But her escape through the streets of London only seemed to lead her from bad to worse. I really enjoyed the story and the characters in this novel and will likely read the next in the series, but there were some things that really bothered me. It may just be the Kindle version, but there were quite a few grammar and punctuation errors (out of place commas, missing words) that were very distracting. At several points I had to stop and re-read a passage to make sure I understood it correctly. Another thing that bothered me was the switching between scenes or characters with absolute...more
While overall it's not a bad book, it's not a terribly good book, either. It's a light read, and others might enjoy it, but I can't say I did.
For all that we're told Catherine is a bluestocking and an intellectual, she has next to no common sense and to me, doesn't seem that smart or knowledgeable. Frankly, she's a bit of an idiot, which I coud happily excuse if she were not constantly called an intellectual bluestocking by practically every character. It's definitely lacking the 'show' and with...more

Loretta Chase's backlist has been released in digital. She demonstrated above average talent for the genre early in her career.
(Unfortunately I did not review right away, so only have scattered notes)
This book grabbed me from the start with its spunky rebellious hero and heroine. I enjoyed the actino
and loved that she whacked the guy who was trying to attack her instead of cowereing and waiting for a hero.

Catherine ran away from home to avoid marriage with a sleazy jerk and after a lot of bad luck, accepts some tea for what she believes to be a kindly old lady. Only to have that kindly old lady slip a mickey into her tea while she’s not looking. Catherine then wakes up completely nude and in a whore house with her first customer on his way on up. After a minor freak out, Cat gets to work on running through her options of escape and can’t think of any that wouldn’t end her up in a worse position t...more
I really liked this book. This is definitely where Ms. Chase learned her ability to make characters, both male and female, interesting and unique. Max was perfect! He was, to me, like most young men...a little selfish, kind, easily spooked, and decent. Catherine was a perfect match for him. His sister was a great character also, it is nice to read about supportive families. The friend Jack was also great and I enjoyed his book as well.

4.5 stars I finished this book with a happy sigh indeed. Such a fun read!
The story contains all manner of cliched elements that would normally make me an impatient reader. After all, we have a completely improbable beginning as the hero rescues heroine from a brothel, folks nattering about Almack's, a heroine who feels the need to take in urchins, a rakish hero, and so on. However, the author telling the story has near-perfect timing and chooses her words with great care. I found myself admirin...more

This is another wonderful novel from LC. The hero is cut from the same cloth as dissolute duke in The Last Hellion and has a wonderful counterpoint in the petite pain in the ass he discovers at a bawdy house. Her priggishness convinces him of her plight and he saves her several times. Slowly but surely his sense of gentlemanly obligation to marry her to save her from ruin turns to a rampaging desire to marry her. She is quietly gallant and witty. Swinish villains and a plucky cockney brat round...more
My reviews are mostly my thoughts as I went with the book...
Loving the first few pages, so damned funny!! :p Max is so HOT (have always been in love with that particular name!) :D
**************
Ok more than halfway through and there is something going on between the two, still a bit slow for me. I do find Max hot but I'd probably think a 1000 times if I wanna have a relationship with him, so can't blame Cat. Basil was far more 'on the target', if I might say so and Alexandra was definitely more f...more

In a nutshell: Miss Catherine Pelliston runs away from an unpalatable betrothal and finds herself in a brothel begging a half-naked man for help. He, although being quite drunk and not believing her story, extracts her from the sticky situation she'd managed to land herself in and takes her to his lodgings, later learning of her parentage and offering her marriage to save her reputation.
Characters: Sheesh, Lord Rand made me laugh repeatedly. He was just coming off a 6-month dissipation binge whe...more

Although I enjoyed the story it was a bit Jane Eyre-ey. i found all the names confusing to. The main characters, Max and Catherine were totally lovable. But it would have been so much easier reading if they had just stuck with one name each!! Catherine wasn't so bad , as she flicked between last manes, but managed to stay with "P" as the start dor each name. Max however, was known by so many different names I found myself constantly having to recheck back a few lines to see who I was reading abo...more

This book seemed light on the actual romance, but I enjoyed the plot and the story moved along nicely. I didn't want to throttle either of the main characters--win!
One issue: I read the Kindle version from my library and noticed enough typos, grammar mistakes, and formatting errors to notice. The errors may be because the book was recently digitized (I believe). It could use a good look by a copy editor.

I like Regency Romances - they are so predictable that they are comforting. This one followed the usual formula - girl meets boy, girl despises boy, girl falls in love with boy, boy overcomes her reluctance and wins the girl. This one has a enough unusual twists thrown in to keep interesting. I liked it and will read the next one, The Devil's Delilah.
This book is silly, the characters are silly and the plot is silly. There are jokes that are funny, the book does not take itself too seriously. I did enjoy it but I recognise that it is not exactly a good book. Catherine finds her self in a brothel, expected to earn her keep but she enlists one of her potential clients to save her. Unexpectedly (by her, not the reader) this particular client is none other then Viscount Rand, or Max as she first knows him. Somehow between the two of them they ma...more
I found this title on the Clean Romance group bookshelf. I don't really know if this author's other books are just as clean, but I found this one enjoyable. It's not quite as well written as Georgette Heyer, but the characters were amusing and the plot interesting. It was a nice, fluffy romance book. I'm going to see if I can find any other clean romances by Loretta Chase.

I attended New England public schools. We diagrammed sentences. We were drilled in spelling and grammar. This brutal process proved useful in later life. It turned out that everything they taught me in school--including the evil word problems in math--was useful in later life. Too bad I forgot most of it.

“I don't know who had the training of you," he continued doggedly, "but your morals are shocking. You spent a night in my bed, remember, after a night in a bawdy house. You go about collecting street urchins and letting inebriated vagabonds kiss you, and then you get into brawls in pawnshops. You are probably past all redemption, but I'm going to reform you anyhow. If you behave yourself, perhaps I'll let you reform me on occasion, but I make no promises.”
