This is Harry A. Franck's first book. It's the account of his epic journey around the world. He originally intended to travel without money, without weapons, and without carrying baggage or supplies. Instead, he wanted to depend both for protection and the necessities of life on personal endeavor and the native resources of each locality. He altered his original plan to ...more

this i think is the 3rd franck book i've read recently. this is his "1st" and big one, he more or less decides spur of moment to travel around the world, on foot, with no money. so a vagabond, and interestingly enough, most of the vagabonds of 1906 or so were from germany, and they were beggars and cons, living the 'easy' life in italy, cario, jerusalem, tokyo, hong kong etc etc. franck tried to not beg or pass off false stories to get money from missionaries or working people or usa embassy ...more

I thought it was excellent in its strangeness. Franck got a masters in Romance Languages ...more

There are at least two approaches to this true story.

Second, with our modern eyes we see him handicapped by the prejudices of race, class and caste of that era. Appalling sentiments and observation are made during his travels.

It's quite a

Such a great book. An American language teacher decided to take a trip around the world to prove that it could be done with no money starting out. He managed to work his way around the world in the 1920s, and his descriptions of people and places are wonderful.
