It did not take long to find more Jance books; my local library had three more Jance novels in its big-print section (which is about all I can read while recovering from my recent cataract operation), and this was the first one I grabbed. An interesting plot parallel; this one begins with a murder that took place over a quarter century before the book starts, as covered in a prologue, but that is the only similarity, other than that the characters are wonderful, the dialog is equally good, and t...more

Thanks, Sharon.

I would have never read this author if you hadn’t given me a couple of her books. I almost didn’t. I started ‘Dead Wrong’ thinking I will read a few pages, then find something else. But she is actually a clever writer and very quickly my thoughts were more like what the hell is going on here? Wow, I totally bought this story.

It is a great little thriller. The main character, a sheriff, is a couple days away from giving birth and ready to explode when all hell breaks loose. Dead b...more

This one is my first J.A JANCE book and i must say she isn't a bad writer and has a knack of creating interest in reading. however i rated this book 2 stars because i am rather not impressed by the plot and story set by the writer. When i bought this book i expected some suspense and thrill which i always look forward to when reading a mystery solving book. however this book just didn't succeed in both areas much. the thrill was lost throughout and as with the suspense well it was there in the e...more

I sincerely like the character of Joanna Brady, and I enjoy reading about Cochise County, Arizona which is an area I visited often during the 6 years I lived in Phoenix.

The stories of J.A. Jance's that I've read so far seem to have a ring of truth to them. The relationships are believable. And it seems that the sheriff never gets to focus on just one big case at a time . . . in this book, there were two major cases that her department was working on with thin resources. Figuring out who did the...more

I read J.A.Jance every now and then and I'm often surprised how much I enjoy her books.

This is book is definitely worth the time. I wouldn't say it is a "page turner" or "heart thumping" but it does keep your attention with multiple sub-plots and interesting characters.

Joanna Brady, an elected Sheriff, is big time pregnant but still running the Sheriff's department and fighting crime all at the same time. Meanwhile, her husband, Butch, is off at a mystery writer's conference and obnoxious, overb...more

"Dead Wrong" by J. A. Jance
(from the inside flap)
Juggling a family and a career is never easy--and it's becoming a real challenge for Sheriff Joanna Brady. Coping with the inpending delivery of her second child as well as a staff shortage, the last things Joanna needs are two serious crimes.
First, the body of an unidentified man is found in the desert, all of his fingers savagely severed. Following the scant clues, Joanna learns that the victim was an ex-con who had served twenty years in peris

Wow, another great Joanna Brady thriller. Joanna is about to pop out her second child when a body is found in the desert. The body proves to be that of an ex-con who killed his pregnant wife years before and was working for the prison system. Joanna finds that the ex-con always denied killing his wife and he had friends who believed him. In the meantime, one of Joanna's animal control officers was viciously attacked and left for dead while investigating a dog fighting ring. In the midst of all t...more

I like this series about sheriff Joanna Brady in Cochise County, Arizona (Dead Wrong is #12 in the series). There is good police procedure and good investigating along with the social aspects of balancing family life with work life, especially the very demanding life of police work complicated by the fact that Sheriff Brady is in the last weeks of her pregnancy. In this story, we watch the sheriff's department discover who murdered ex-con Bradley Evans who has completed his sentence for having k...more

I liked the Southern Arizona backdrop, but the story itself was rather predictable. Also, I though it was dumb how Joanna and her detectives had just gotten done reading about how the mother-in-law had spent years trying to keep her son-in-law in prison but when they went to visit her they were oh so surprised that she was nothing but gleeful at his death...I mean honestly, I think that Jance could make her characters more believable. She also lacks pithy comments when she tries to end her chapt...more

Dead Wrong, like the others I have read in the series, is a serviceable murder mystery. In this one, Joanna is nine months pregnant and a lot of the side action involves family members fussing over her and her constant need for bathroom breaks. She's confronted with two cases: a murder victim who is himself a convicted murderer, whose fingers have been severed, and a suspected dogfighting ring.
For me, the interesting part was Brady's job, for which she stands election, encompassing Animal Contr...more

I like Jance's breezy style, and, having spent a lot of time in SE Arizona, appreciate her nods to Bisbee and Cochise County. Sheriff Brady is an old-fashioned plucky heroine. Her pregnancy in this go-round adds some interest. This plot was sufficiently convolouted to keep me going--but I immediately guessed the identity of the young woman the victim was "stalking." The dust jacket likenes Jance to Cornwell or Grafton, but she is not in their league, in my book. Cornwell has a sustained sense of...more

I really enjoyed this book until the ending, but it contained one of the things I find hardest to tolerate in a crime novel--an implausibly complicated Mission Impossible murder and frame up plot requiring so many people with French Farce timing that probably nobody could pull it off in reality. Come on now--somebody would have done something to mess up that deal. The backstory was interesting, especially when it turns out Butch has the cojones to put his witch of a mother in her place--now if o...more

Sheriff Joanna Brady is nine months pregnant but that won't keep her down. She's out solving crimes, involved in a high speed car chase, hiking through the woods to find another criminal and shooting one of the bad guys after dropping to the ground and aiming under the car!
Lucky for her that her water doesn't break at the crime scene till she's solved that week's murders. [Gosh, I think I laid around with my feet propped up the last couple of weeks before my baby was born:]. And people thought D...more

Joanna has won re-election as sheriff, and she's about to have her baby, but that doesn't stop her from trying to solve the latest homicide. An ex-con was murdered, and she wants to find out who did it. As per usual, another mystery is also in the story that of a pit bull fighting ring. Interwoven between the two mysteries are the normal everyday concerns of a 30+ year old mother and wife that is trying to balance being pregnant and working full-time as sheriff of an undermanned county. Enjoyabl...more

I enjoyed the book, despite the fact that it's the 11th book a series. In fact, now I want to read the first 10 books in the series as well.

Beware a minor spoiler (not really since it's readily available info in other online reviews)...but originally I took issue with the fact that the woman who's attacked was, of course, also raped. Part of my aversion to this is due to what seems like an overabundance of it lately. (This was now the second mystery in a row in which rape played a role, though t...more

I always enjoy Janace's Joanna Brady mysteries. I appreciate the multiple back-stories as well as the developement of her characters from one book to the next. In fact, I appreciate the ongoing conflicts with mothers and mother-in-laws more than I did the actual plot of this one. The baby-switch premise wasn't very well supported in the story; neither were the facts behind the murdered wife revealed. Other than those glaring ommisions, I found the book entertaining.

I started reading J.A. Jance's Joanna Brady series on a vacation to Sedona, Arizona, when I found an early installment in the local library's used book sale, and liked it enough to read the others. Joanna Brady is sheriff of Cochise County, a working mother of a (now) teenage daughter, widowed and remarried and now a new mother, so she faces the real-life challenges of a woman trying to do the best by her family, her job, her friends, and her community, often in situations where there is no obvi...more

I read this book because I am going to meet the author at Literary Orange and wanted to become acquainted with the Joanna Brady series. I liked that it takes place in Arizona; I can picture the Tucson area since I've been there for ASU vs UA games (go ASU!). This book had alot of characters with unexpected relationships, so it was sometimes confusing, but it all comes together in the end.

I really like three of Ms. Jance's series, but I think the one featuring Joanna Brady Dickson is my favorite. This book was especially riveting with Joanna having to deal with several homicides and the beating of an animal control officer (not to mention a tremendous influx of animals to control), the inlaws from hell and her own pregnancy.

I enjoyed this book. was a bit surprised that she mad one of officrs wear vest and made a big deal when she couldn't / didn't due to her pregnant state

qu is would you really go chasing criminals in that late stage when you are about to go into labour and can you really find such an easy going husband who would not put his foot down?
David
This is one of the better Joanna Brady books that I have read. This one keeps your interest through the entire story, during two separate murder investigations.

The story takes place as Joanna Brady is approaching the end of her pregnancy. I was able to figure out one of the endings fairly early on, though.

What an awesome suspense/mystery...I have never read this author before and I can't wait to read more! I am not reading in any order...this is my first. I listened to it and didn't want to get out of the car...the suspense was both will she have the baby before the crimes are solved...or will she solve the crimes?

I don't understand why these fall so short of the JP Beaumont books. I started skimming almost immediately, and am done with the series. No interest in doing them in order. Something keeps these from moving from bleh to compelling, though this is the first one that tipped from barely 2.5 to maybe 2.

Another fine book by a woman who is a consistently good author. Of all of Jance's series I like sheriff Joanna Brady best. Not only does she fight crime, but she also has to fight paperwork, bureaucracy and family problems. That is not easy to write about and keep interesting but J.A. Jance does it well.
Tracy
Not a really deep or convoluted mystery, but it was fine. No outright humor in it (I've been spoiled lately, apparently) but again, it was fine.

The writing was descriptive, and the writer was able to make you really dislike the characters that were meant to be disliked. One odd thing was that I don't recall ever reading "got out of his car" or anything referring to a "car" - but it was always "Crown Victoria" or other specific models. It wasn't until the last couple of chapters that I realized t...more

Joanna has been allowed to grow, and mature. I like her ever better now, with her growing family and trying to be all to all people in her life. This was a good one, with believable characters and an affectionate look at some of the foibles we all face or perpetrate in this life.

I liked Sheriff Joanna Brady. I thought she had guts and heart at exactly the right times when dealing with different people. She has an especially hard job because of her pregnancy. I thought that narrator Susan Ericksen did an exceptionally good job of imitating the different characters especially the Latino ones. I found the story intriguing and the mystery kept me guessing although I did manage to guess right about the murderer near the end. A good read and I'll look forward to reading more...more

I really like Sheriff Joanna Brady, because she is a strong woman, yet she feels that her family is most important. I also like this book and the others I have read because she writes about southeast Arizona where I live. It is fun to know the places she is talking about.
Dave
Fine summer escapist reading. Jance balances a taut plot with well developed characters. There is both suspense and humor in the main and various story threads. The Sheriff's mother-in-law is one of the most frightening characters I've encountered in fiction.
Julie
This was actually not bad. She's writes typical who-done-it's, you know, the cop kind. I think it's the genre I don't love. The writing is so utilitarian, like James Patterson, only better. I do like that it's about this area, and the Seattle, Gig Harbor area.
