I read the first couple of pages. Alice and her friend Jane are chased by four big burly men and are rescued by another guy, then they decide that it's OK to get into the car of a complete stranger because he saved them from being raped or killed.

Apparently a rescue is the new sweets from a stranger.

I'm sorry, it just made me LOL. Not for me.

Most people won't believe me when I say this, and some might even think I'm an idiot for saying it! I liked this book way more than Twilight! I found Alice to be so much more tolerable than the ever annoying Bella Swan. She meets Jack and she doesn't turn into a complete blubbering fool for starters.

Jack is an awesome character as well. I just really liked all of the characters in this book.

I originally thought that the price would speak for itself but it completely surprised me and now I have no idea why Amazon are selling it so cheap!

Of course he's a werewolf. Of course.

You know those books written in third person with the purpose of allowing the reader some omniscience? Well, I guess Hocking tries, but I can't help but feel like my detective skills are being severely underestimated. I'm very insulted if she thinks my idea of a good book is to be clenching my teeth and yelling, "OMGZZZ HE IS A FUCKING VAMPIRE I GET THE HINTS CAN WE MOVE ON PLEASEEEEEEEEEEE?"

This might have worked back then when Dracula was still a novelty, but this "suspense" only works now for real, unconventional monsters. Like in Rick Yancey's books. Or whatever the fuck Barrons is in the Fever series. You don't get to say things like, 'he stiffened at the sight of the bloody cut on my finger' and 'caressing my throat' and expect people to have a migraine over the nature of your "monster". Sheesh.

"Suspense" aside, it doesn't help that Alice's life revolves around Jack, much like Bella's (and even then she had Jacob as a distraction. Imagine Twilight with Edward as the only love interest). She meets Jack in the first chapter. From then on it's Jack-this, Jack-that. And he's all Let's-hang-out-every-day-Alice. BTW my entire family loves you, and although I know you find this creepy, together with how often I evade your questions, try to suppress any self-preservation instincts and just be the family pet, ok?

Gah, my eyes just can't stop spinning in their sockets. Hocking has no flair for character-building or relationships. I'm bored out of my brains and this will probably be the last book I'll read from her. I'm kinda upset this is going to be my first book for 2012.

On second thought, this is exactly the kind of book I'll have a blast reading one-star reviews for. It's exactly the kind of book that makes me friends on goodreads, based on taste alone.(less)

How about we start with the bad?

To be honest, from the outset I was a bit put off by the heavy Twilight vibes this story was giving off; A young woman saved from an unpleasant group of men by a young guy of the fanged variety? A human girl immune to the affects of said vampire, whilst they obviously still work on every other person in the vicinity? And that's not to mention the similarities between the characters, which have been well documented in other reviews such as this one. It rings just a few too many bells. To be honest it initially felt as though I was reading a Twilight fan fiction.

Another thing that got me right from the start was some of Hocking's use of language, in certain places words just seemed awkward. For example:
'“This is truly infuriating,” Jane said, flicking her cigarette to the dampened sidewalk and smashing it with her stilettoed boot.'
There are two things that annoy me in this sentence. Firstly the language used by Jane, who then goes on to whine about alcohol and throw herself at Jack. The way in which she speaks here seems far removed from the character Hocking is trying to portray. Secondly the use of the word 'smashing', it seems a little over the top in terms of the previous words in the sentence, and seems to contrast rather sharply with the carefree notion of 'flicking'. It also makes me cringe, having been standing in stilettos all night the last thing I would even think about doing is stamping an already fragile foot.

The other thing that stuck out like a sore thumb was the name dropping of all the bands and pop culture references. It drove me insane. Everyone has their own personal preference in regards to what parts of modern life they include in their writing, but I really don't care if the trousers he is wearing are Dickies or if he is obsessed with Guitar Hero.

I did enjoy the way in which Amanda went about introducing her characters, and I also liked the idea of Milo's plot line, even if it could have done with additional development in some places. Some of the relationships could have also used some additional work, the way in which Alice sees Jack is decidedly naive and that between Alice and Jane is rather choppy, are they actually friends at all?

For some time what annoyed me the most about Alice was her inability to identify Jack for what he was from the beginning, come on: Only out at night, never actually eating, weird around blood... It was driving me nuts that she couldn't figure it out. It took some time but then I really thought about it, would I be so quick to believe he were a vampire if I were in her position? Probably not (although that's not to say it wouldn't occur to me, I've read way to many books like this).

My Blood Approves actually ended up being a relatively entertaining read. Twilight similarities aside there was enough of a difference that I think I may actually read the next in the series.

I award this book three stars out of five, I liked it, but it didn't blow me away in any sense of the word. As with Twilight this book is a pleasant piece of fluff, people bash it but it has it's place. Twilight convinced thousands (a conservative estimate) of teen girls to read and influenced the young adult book market for the better. This is obviously shaping up to be a popular read too.

I did feel like smacking the main character several times. Alice just seemed a little too stupid at times. Like she knew something was up supernaturally with them but didn't figure it could possibly be that they were vampires. That bugged me a bit. But teenagers just are stupid (sorry guys, it's true. I was stupid too!). So once again although it bugged me a bit it certainly didn't make me hate the book or anything.

Most of the characters were pretty good but I really liked Alice's brother, Milo. He seemed the most real to me and the one I could visualize the best. I also liked Jack and thought that his personality was pretty great.

With the love interest... hmmm... I just didn't know where it was going until pretty far into the book. No, I take that back. We still don't know where it's going! But that's where the second, third and fourth(?) book come in. But I guess what I'm saying is that I didn't really 'feel' the connection right away. She had to actually come out and say it. But I got the feeling that that's just how Alice and Jack were. Personality wise.

I get sick of people always comparing books to Twilight. I pretty much think that is wrong, wrong, wrong. But here I'm going to do it. I admit I got a Twilight vibe from this. The setting is different. The vampires are different. There aren't werewolves (as far as we know so far). And the characters are different. This is no Twilight rip off. But the way Alice interacts with Jacks family gave me the Twilight vibe. And the way Alice handles everything reminded me of Bella and how she handled everything. I think that that might not really be a bad thing though... and Twilight fans might like this more because of that. There were other small things that reminded me of Twilight but I could be here all night if I really started nit picking everything to pieces.

Overall I enjoyed the story and things that may be considered 'mistakes' or 'poor editing' didn't take away from the overall feel of the book. I didn't have a hard time getting into it and I actually had a hard time putting the book down. I read it mostly all in one day. I'm actually quite anxious to read the next book! I skimmed the snippet in the back and now I really want to read it!

As a person who loves school (and *chose* to go back many years after finishing college) and someone who wants to do something valuable with my life, I cannot relate to Alice's lack of interest in getting an education, lack of interest in any sort of future career, and I can't wrap my head around why it does not bother her at all that Jack does *nothing* but play video games or go out to clubs even though he's 24 years old and *should* be a valuable contributing member of society at this point in his life. Sure, he doesn't need money to support himself, but I'd like him a lot more if he weren't a lazy bum and, I don't know...volunteered his time somewhere for a good cause, or had some crappy, low-paying job even. If I won the lottery tomorrow and didn't have to work a day in my life after that, I would definitely be finding ways to volunteer my time or some low-paying but fun job to keep me occupied. However, despite the fact that both Alice and Jack annoy me, I can see how they might appeal to teenagers who may not be interested in school and may fantasize about a life like Jack's.

I've read other reviews where people have problems with the fact that Alice is drawn to Peter despite the fact that he treats her like crap and is a total asshole to her. That aspect of the book doesn't bother me because it serves as a perfect illustration of the fact that the physical/pheromone/chemical connection between the two of them is not something either of them has any logical control over. Alice doesn't actually *want* to be with Peter in her brain, but the chemicals make it so she just can't stop herself. If she had a choice in the matter, it seems clear she would not choose Peter. But she doesn't have a choice (or at least at this point in time it appears she doesn't have a choice), and that's the point.

Back to what kept me reading until the end. Alice meets Jack and they form a sort of friendship, that over time, morphs into more-than-friends feelings on both their parts. Alice meets Jack's "brother," Peter, and has an immediate attraction/lust/pheromone-induced connection that she doesn't necessarily want and can't control (he feels the same). I'm not usually one for love triangles, but I think what works for me about this one so far is that it isn't actually a love triangle. Alice loves Jack and Jack loves Alice. The connection between Alice and Peter is some purely chemical reaction their blood has to each other and neither seems to want it, but they can't get away from it either. To complicate matters, the physical connection between Alice and Peter will make it so that if Jack ever drinks from Alice, Peter will know and be forced to kill both Alice and Jack (like...literally unable to stop himself from doing it, even if he wanted to stop). I'll probably keep reading the series just to figure out how there is any sort of resolution to this impossible situation. (less)

While I felt it was well written, it just didn't draw me in and say that I had to read the next book in the series. It took just too long to reveal the 'Big Secret' that I had figured out within the first chapter. The love triangle just didn't work for me at all though it was an interesting tangle of feelings I just couldn't get emotionally involved with the characters. I don't count this as one of Ms. Hockings better efforts.

You know how many times I felt like jumping in the book & yelling at Alice??
When I read a book, I like to agree with (or at least see the light in) most of the things the main character does. With this book, most of the time I didn't agree with Alice (the main character). She done a lot of dumb things. Too much for me to enjoy.

There is no other way to say this; Alice is one of the most stupidest (not to mention annoying and damn fricken' confusing) main characters of all times.

It all started with Alice and Jane freezing in the "cold Minnesota night" and trying to get in clubs with fake I.D cards. But unfortunatly, they aren't fooling anyone.

ummm This book made absolutely no sense. I laughed at the main character Alice the whole time and not one problem was solved just more kept arriving. Eines Abends, auf dem Rückweg von einer Disco, rettet ein fremder Junge Alice und ihre Freundin vor ein paar üblen Typen: Jack!
Jack ist erscheint ihr direkt als ein cooler Weltenbummler, denn er tut was er will und wann er es will und auf Schule hat er gar keine Lust.
Jack selber findet Alice direkt sympatisch, denn sie verhält sich nicht wie alle anderen ihm gegenüber. Sie hat Charme und gibt ihm sogar Wiederworte, was er definitiv nicht gewohnt ist.

Der Titel "Unter dem Vampirmond" legt nahe, dass es sich hier um Vampire handelt und so ist für den Leser von Anfang an klar, was genau Jack eigentlich ist.
Im gegensatz zu normalen Vampiren kann Jack auch Tagsüber raus, allerdings macht ihn das sehr müde, also vermeidet er es indem er meist Abends/Nachts unterwegs ist. Auch das trinken von Menschenblut ist nicht zwingend notwendig - wenn auch erfrischend - denn es ist möglich von Spenderblut zu legen. Frisch aus dem Kühlschrank und immer vorrätig.

Wie der Klapptext schon erzählt, handelt es sich hier um eine nicht ganz unkomplizierte Dreiecks-Geschichte. Das Problem ist einfach, dass Alice Herz sich zu Jack hingezogen fühlt, ihr Blut allerdings in seinem Bruder Peter ihren Gefährten erkennt. Nur dass Peter sie eigentlich gar nicht will, dennoch kann auch er sich nicht der Reaktion, seines Blutes auf ihres, entziehen.

Mit einem flüssigen Schreibstil und ständig unerwartet neuen Geschehnissen schafft Amanda Hocking einen mitreißenden Lesefluss. Auch wenn der Leser zu Anfang dieses Buch noch mit anderen ähnlichen Romanen vergleicht, wird schnell klar, dass es sich hier um etwas ganz eigenes handelt.

Das Buch endet spannend, aber nicht unerwartet und durch die Einführung in die Geschichte, mitsamt einigen rasanten und spannenden Entwicklungen, macht es durchaus Lust darauf mehr zu lesen. Als anfängliche Skeptikerin wurde ich mit diesem Buch wirklich überrascht und freue mich schon darauf, wenn ich den zweiten Band in den Händen halte und weiter von Alice und ihrem mitlweilese Chaotischen-Leben zu lesen. Alles in allem gebe ich diesem Buch also 4,5/5 Sternen und würde jedem Skeptiker an's Herz legen die eigenen Bedenken über Bord zu werfen und sich in Versuchung führen zu lassen.(less)

Antes de leer este libro ya me habían advertido sobre ciertas coincidencias con otra saga, cosa que podría llegar a ser desagradable. Pero la empezar a leerlo, no fui consciente hasta que punto había similitudes entre las dos historias, por no hablar de las alusiones que encontré, lo cual fue un poco molesto.

I could write this book off as "yep just like twilight but better" like everyone else but I'm not. One because i actually liked Twilight. Two I feel like everyone has the right to tell there story. and thou we can tell a similar story and compare the two, no two stories are alike.

What do you get when you pair absolutely atrocious writing, self-editing and stolen plot lines? This book. I wanted to like it...I really did but when someone takes so much story-line from other writers and then throws in redundancy, poor grammar and spelling I can't take it. I'm honestly shocked I finished this book. Its like a bad fan-fiction version of The Vampire Diaries and Twilight. "Unter dem Vampirmond" ist der erste Band einer Vampir Saga von Amanda Hocking. Da ich sehr viele Rezensionen von anderen Bloggern lese, bin ich irgendwann auf dieses Buch aufmerksam geworden und war sofort Feuer und Flamme. Zugegeben, Vampirromane gibt es wie Sand am Meer, trotzdem bin ich der Meinung dass es immer wieder etwas neues zu entdecken gibt und wurde nicht enttäuscht. Man sollte meinen, dass diese Geschichte einer bekannten Vampir-Romanze ähnelt, doch die Geschichte um Alice, Jack und Peter ist etwas besonderes. Die einzelnen Charaktere sind stark herausgearbeitet und nicht nur Alice, Peter und Jack sind äußert gut durchdacht, auch Jacks Familie und Alice' Bruder Milo spielen eine größere Rolle und werden immer wieder mit in die Geschichte einbezogen. Die Autorin schreibt mit einer sprühenden Lebendigkeit und jede Seite wird zum Erlebnis, man taucht direkt in die Geschichte ein und will das Buch garnicht mehr aus der Hand legen, bevor man es nicht bis zur letzten Seite ausgekostet hat. Die Geschichte an sich wird nie langweilig und man kann jedes noch so kleine Gefühl der Protagonisten, besonders Alice, nachempfinden. Das Verlangen, welches sie Peter gegenüber empfindet, wird immer wieder beschrieben und manchmal hat man selbst das Gefühl das es einen bald zerreißt, wenn Alice nicht das bekommt was sie will. Auch die Beziehung zu ihrer Mutter ist nachvollziehbar und erinnert den Leser (sofern er das Teenageralter schon hinter sich gelassen hat) an die Eskapaden mit der eigenen Mutter. Jacks Familie wirkt sofort sympathisch und man wünscht sich selbst Teil der Geschichte zu sein, denn als Leser möchte man in diesen Momenten gern die Zuneigung erfahren, die Alice immer wieder entgegengebracht bekommt.
Amanda Hocking gestaltet ihre Vampire anders als gewohnt: Tageslicht macht sie müde aber tötet sie nicht und eine Ernährung ohne Menschen zu beißen ist durchaus möglich - Kontakte zur Blutbank bestehen. Ich finde diese Art von Vampirismus erfrischend anders und finde es sehr gut, dass sie sich so etwas von der Masse abzuheben versucht. Der Titel "Versuchung" passt in jeglicher Hinsicht, denn für Alice stellen die beiden Brüder eine große Versuchung dar, für die Brüder ist es Alice. "Unter dem Vampirmond" erklärt eigentlich schon von Beginn an, das es sich um eine Vampirgeschichte handelt, trotzdem wird es im Buch sehr lange nicht wirklich "erwähnt". Alice Reaktion, als sie erfährt was ihre Freunde wirklich sind, finde ich gut, durchaus menschlich. Vermutlich wäre jeder von uns erst einmal geschockt und etwas irritiert gewesen - die wenigsten wohl aber direkt neugierig! Die Ich - Perspektive (aus Alice' Sicht) passt sehr gut und die Sprache der Erzählung ist flüssig und sehr gut verständlich. Alles in allem ein sehr zu empfehlendes Buch!(less)

I love this book to the bones. I love the characters! At first I was kinda rooting for Jack now I was kinda rooting for Peter but I think Jack is better but I wanna get Peter. so it's kinda complicated.

As the story moved on. Alice continue her speculations of how different Jack is and that really get the best of her when they were attacked by a rabid dog. She freaks out because after Jack yelled at her to go to the car she got sick to the fact that Jack killed the dog. and no ordinary person can kill a powerful dog with one click or what. Alice believed that Jack was injured from dog bites but she realized that the bites were healing fast..Not only that she find out that her brother Milo is gay and attracted to Jack when Jack visits Alice

Then yeahh. She met Peter, Jack's brother and some really weird things happened to her. Like she's drawn to him. Seeing him makes it hard to breathe. The thing is He wants to hate her.

Then an incident happen and because of that. Jack confessed "We're vampires". I really can imgained that scene. Like damn! :)

and from that they reveal that Alice is Peter's soul mate that's why she is incredibly attracted to him. but it seems like Peter is pushing her away.

Alice is really attracted to Peter and it seems like there's this gravity around him. That Alice wants to be with him. But the thing is.. She's like falling in love with Jack. and you can't deny the fact that Jack is drawn to her. Jack was like inlove to her.. But they can't because Peter will kill them but he is pushing her away.

UGH! complicated much? read it! find out what you would think! (less)

I kept seeing this series on my audible "recommended" page, so I took a stab at it. I had already read Switched a while ago, also from Amanda Hocking, and enjoyed it, so figured this one should be good. I have to admit, I love a series.

I just finished listening to this, and my heart is still pounding from it. At first I thought it was too much like the book "T" and even rolled my eyes a few times, but once I got into it,my feelings changed. I am still not sure if I would put it as one of my fav...more
