Haha, ok - the below review is one I wrote on Amazon.com in October of 2003. A review, I might add, that was found to be useful by 9 out of 9 Amazon members. Wow, I know, wow...
I recently read this book outloud to my cousin and he LOVED it! The book is so intuitive and allows so much expression and voice intonation. I am always looking for unique, quality storybooks to keep on my shelves long after my children have children. I struggle to find something special in between "I love you Forever" and "Dumb Bunnies". Sometimes I think I find it when I see breathtaking illustrations, often to be disappointed when the words aren't in the same league. This book absolutely has both. If your children get scared easily- mine do not- then I might skip this one. It is written in fairytale prose and that may keep some ki...more
Hmmm, this is one of those 'I feel like I'm missing something' books. The reviews for this one are so overwhelmingly positive. I was really excited to finally see that our library had finally acquired a copy, but truthfully I wasn't really wowed like I thought I would be. The artwork is inventive to be sure. The story is kind of funny/creepy/original, but also sort of random and rambling. The overall effect just didn't do much for me. The good news is that it's one less book on my wish list.

I was lead to this story mostly through the eye-catching, vivid style of Dave McKean’s illustration, after loving the graphic novel hybrid of Slog’s Dad. But this is not a case where the illustration supersedes the text – in fact far from it. The Wolves in the Walls is a great example of showing how text and illustration combine to deliver a collaborative storytelling experience, not merely there to support the other, but to interlink and fill in the blanks.

Probably one of the only picture books I really, really like. Creepy as all heck, though. Come to think of it, that's probably why I like it.
Am I the only one who thought this is a mishmash of H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Rats in the Walls” and the classic wolf-riddled admonitory bedtime stories like “Little Red Riding Hood” and “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”? The Wolves in the Walls, a collab work by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, is yet another landmark tale that speaks directly to young readers while teaching a few lessons like open communication in the family.

The Wolves in the Walls is a story about Lucy and her family, and how they have wolves living in their walls - or at least that's what Lucy thinks. She hears scratching and nibbling in the walls and is convinced that the noises are coming from the wolves. But everyone that Lucy tells (her mom, dad and brother,) dismisses her concerns with more believable explanations. Little do they know, Lucy isn't that far-fetched...

Lucy is a young girl living with her family in a house that manifests odd sounds in its walls. She's quite certain of what she's hearing, but her family doesn't seem to believe her. When the wolves come out, it is (as the family has always said) all over. Her father believes the noises are caused by mice or rats. Her mother, busying herself with bottling jam, agrees that it is an insect or animal. Lucy's little brother, a video game champion, thinks it might be bats. But Lucy is sure that the bu...more
The Wolves in the Walls tells the tale of Lucy and her family, who are driven out of their home by wolves who come out of the walls. Lucy tries to warn her family that there are wolves in the walls but no one believes her. There is a element of foreboding throughout the book as we are constantly reminded that if the wolves come out of the walls 'it's all over'. Lucy is proved right in the end and it is Lucy who saves the family home and rids it of the wolves.

The Wolves in the Walls by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean is a brilliant, if not slightly disturbing and incredibly scary, picture book.
The illustrations are excellent and the cover (which looks slightly like the girl out of the horror film, ‘The Ring’) gives a good indication of the content. In short there are wolves in the walls of a house so the family living there have to take refuge when they come out. The family then hide in the walls and turn the tables by scaring the wolves away when they c...more

My initial reaction to The Wolves in the Walls included horror, disgust, shock and curiosity. A summary might have you feeling the same way! To be fair, Gaiman is an excellent writer and the illustrator, Dave McKean is extremely talented. The book begins with Lucy walking around her house and asking her family about the noises she hears in the walls. Her brother, mother and father shoo her idea of wolves living in the walls as they each assume the noise is either rats or mice. Each family member...more
The Wolves in the Walls is a sophisticated picture book, which means you will enjoy it as much as your child will. Gaiman, the creator of many graphic novels and a writer of fantastic adult fiction, has created a delightfully dark and entertaining story about Lucy, a little girl who is still learning the difference between reality and fantasy. McKean's chaotic illustrations, which combine drawings with "real" pictures in a format reminiscent of graphic novels, effectively portray Lucy's uncerta...more
Neil Gaiman is a tremendously entertaining writer, and has done it again with this book.
The Wolves in the Walls is sort of a hybrid graphic novel/picture book, taking the best parts of both worlds and swirling them into a good story that has a perceptive word or two to say about living life in fear of the "wolves in the walls", real or imaginary.

Lucy is convinced there are wolves living in the walls of her home, but the rest of her family members are too wrapped in their own lives to take her seriously -- until the wolves come stampeding out and take over the house, forcing the family to hide out in an uncomfortable shed. Brave Lucy, ever the voice of reason, suggests returning to sleep in the walls, which of course... scares the wolves away.

A Summary/A Thoughtful Review:
This dark and suspenseful picture book, more appropriate for an older audience of upper elementary to middle school-aged readers, will appeal to those looking for an eerier side of fantasy. Neil Gaimen writes a thrilling story about a anixous, yet curious girl, Lucy, who believes there are wolves living in the walls of her house. As her father, mother, and brother continue to deny the reality of this situation, Lucy, on the other hand, continues to hear "sneaking,...more

While Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean's style may not be for everyone, I thought this was a fantastic picture book for young people. Although, I don't think I, personally, would have enjoyed this as a child because the pictures would have creeped me out. For older children this is great. Strong, female protagonist who proves to her family that she is a problem solver. Poses a few questions that are worth reflection about fear and it's ability to cripple us. I also commonly find the theme in Gaiman's...more
This book is an interesting twist on what readers have come to expect from Neil Gaiman that have only read his adult stories. Yes, it's dark. Yes, it's twisted. Yes, it's ironic. After all, it is Gaiman writing it.
However, all of these qualities manage to work together to make a story that is intriguing to children and adults alike. Not too scary, but with enough suspense to keep reading.
I would say this is one of the better children's books I've read in a while.

“The Rock Star” of literacy creates another best-selling book with The Wolves in the Wall. Lucy is certain there are wolves living in the walls of her home. Lucy's mom and dad dismiss her concern, until the wolves actually come out of the walls. The wolves take control over their home and Lucy and her parents run away into their garden and hide. Eventually the family regains control of their home, scaring the wolves away. Everything seems fine until Lucy hears a new sound coming from the wall.

This is a very special, wonderful book. It is quite scary and creepy, but shows that facing up to fears has a positive outcome. A little girl called Lucy hears noises in the walls of her house, and is convinced that there are wolves living there. Her family dismisses her fears, and her father tells her that "If the wolves come out, then it is all over". One day, the wolves do indeed come out, and the family must run away, but Lucy is determined that they must face up to the badly-behaved wolves...more

This book takes you beyond the walls of your imagination. I would like to invite everybody to be taken by Lucy`s hand in this endless trip. Why endless ? You read it to find out and if you find the end of it, it is because you have a lack of imagination, so to help you out just enjoy the art in all its drawings and let them do what Lucy hardly does with her family, let the wolves or the elephants or well you choose, just let yourself go and enjoy it.

(Audio Version) My 3rd grade students, particularly the boys, thrive on “terrifying, creepy, and sinister.” So when I read reviews that described Neil Gaiman’s Wolves in the Walls as such, I was hooked. I listened to the audio without any picture support, and was surprised to find it, well, a little humorous. I felt a little guilty chuckling at a book that is marketed as dark and “the stuff of nightmares.” The 17-minute narration alone was just not enough to convey this. I visualized a lighter t...more
Gee, I remember reading this book at NBS eons ago. After reading Coraline, I decided to make a review with this Gaiman book as well.
The Wolves in the Walls is a short childrens story, illustrated by Dave McKean again, about a girl named Lucy. The overall package of the book made it so expensive. LOL. But great images...a bit creepy...but that's Gaiman's mind. The text was playful, rhymes and rhymes. I could feel Dr. Seuss.

The Wolves in the walls: Neil Gaiman:
A delectably daring and remarkable book!
This eccentric and distinctive book tells the intriguing story of a brave little girl called Lucy, her indifferent family, and a pack of wolves that are living inside the walls of her house!
Lucy is sure that the ‘clawing and gnawing’ and the ‘nibbling and squabbling’, that she hears in the middle of the night, are the sounds of creatures much more terrifying than the rats, bats or mice that her unconcerned family resol...more
In Lucy's house, grown-ups and older brothers don't listen to little girls. This is a spooky and creepy story about strange noises and the underlying fear that one day "it will all be over". Lucy's predictions come true and she proves to be the wise one in the face of fear and homelessness in her attempt to be reunited with her pig-puppet.
This is a great imaginative story that has a reasonably happy if not somewhat disconcerting ending for Lucy can still hear funny (elephant sized) noises in the...more

An unusual, slightly creepy story, perfect for older picture book readers/listeners (and parents who are tired of the usual, rhyming, brightly illustrated picture book collection).
Although longer in length than many picture books – my four year old listened intensely to the story of Lucy, her pig puppet, and the dangerous/loud wolves (only Lucy believes) are living in the house walls.
When the wolves come “howling and a yowling, a bumping and a thumping” out of the walls, it is Lucy who bravely...more

I love the quirky story! The story is fairy tale like but maybe a bit too terrifying for really young children (reminds me of "Coraline").
This picture book displays the striking characteristics of a graphic novel: numerous four-panel pages opening into spreads that include painted people; scratchy ink-lined wolves (with their red glowing eyes); and photographed, computer-manipulated images courtesy of the great Dave McKean.

The Wolves in the Walls is a dark and delightful story about a girl named Lucy, who hears the skritch-skritch-scratching of wolves behind her walls. It is wonderfully creepy, but oh so fun! Lucy's spunk and courage is reminiscent of Coraline, which is never a bad thing because Coraline is amazing.
Perhaps if I were much younger, the wolves might have scared me. But at my ripe-old age, I just wanted to party with the wolves who seemed to know how to have a damn good time. The picture...more

This is a story about a girl called Lucy who lives with her parents and brother in a big house. Lucy starts to hear noises within the walls and she believes it is wolves who are making the sounds. When she tells the other members in her family they do not believe her. It’s not until one night, when the wolves come out of the walls, her family realise she was telling the truth. I pre-read this one and decided not to read it aloud to my students. But after listening to Neil Gaiman explain his reasoning behind creating the book and seeing my students' genuine interest in more of his work, I decided to give it a go. The kids LOVED it, and I enjoyed it much more when coupled with their delight. The main character, Lucy, was persistant and brave while her parents and brothers wanted to run away. The messages: that you should listen to kids, even if what they say sounds biza...more
