The illustration in this book is definitely worth 5 stars--it is absolutely gorgeous! I really don't know if I've ever seen such beautiful illustrations. My niece picked it up at the library and I made her check it out after glimpsing the pages as she turned through it. Then she went home and I kept it to read for myself.

The writing, though, I would give 3 stars or maybe even 2, so I'm compromising with the overall review. Some of it I liked; most of it was only okay, and some of it bothered me...more

The Rhythm and Rhyme of animals in the wild radiated by beautiful chalk-like outlined illustrations, brings this book to life.

A sweet display of easy to read poems with beautiful illustrations. In the Wild is one of those children's books that will have a child asking for a repeat read, again and again. From the lion's roar, free to roam to the polar bears flowing swim. Children will delight in the large illustrations and print. This book keeps the poems short, using easy to read sound out words...more

Some of the pages in this one are quite stunning with exquisite technique. I found this one on a listserv as the winner for a 2010 mock Caldecott. While the cover is really not that exciting online it looks pretty decent with a plastic covered dust jacket in person and the interior illustrations a even better. The dark bold woodblocks are printed in black which would create a rather stark appearance but instead are unexpectedly softened by watercolors. The rawness of the black designs match the...more

This book of poems explores wild animals throughout the world. Intriguing animals from the lion to the panda to the polar bear are examined through poems that get to the very heart of them. The poems are brief and at the same time evocative. Paired with the watercolor and woodcut illustrations, the book is an inviting collection of poems suitable for the young child.

Elliott writes his poems with a great sense of play and curiosity. Turn the page, and you will get a contrasting approach with ser...more

My top pick for the Mock Caldecott, from an author and illustrator who are not familiar to me. The artwork is done with two contrasting media - black woodcuts, that repeat patterns from the animals on one page into a background on another, and soft watercolors in palettes that suggest the animal's home: veldt, forest, or treetop. Each two page spread features an animal and a short poem that succinctly and using clever wordplay, tells us something about the animal. For example: The Lion / stands...more

Fourteen short poems pay tribute to fascinating animals such as the lion ("when he roars,/ the wide world listens," unpaged) and the giraffe ("Long-necked/show-stopper!" unpaged). Young readers will love these since they describe many of their favorite animals and are accompanied by wonderfully created colored woodblock prints with watercolors that trick readers into thinking the buffalo and wolf, subjects for two separate poems, are right outside the door. Although I don't like this quite as mu...more

Do you like animals? You do? You're in luck because this collection of poems will introduce you to or reacquaint you with many wild animals including the elephant, the panda, and the kangaroo.

What I thought: I haven't read Elliott's other collection On the Farm, but I definitely like his style. The poems are short and lyrical, and they evoke beautiful pictures in my mind. Meade's illustrations are perfect. The colors are soft, but the woodcut's black lines adds the right definition. My favorite...more

Poems about wild animals! The pictures are wild looking themselves and perfectly capture the feeling of the book. The poems are charming and young students will enjoy them. This would be a perfect pairing with a mini animal research project. The poems are not informative but they are accurate in capturing the feeling and power of each wild animal.

I recommend this as an addition to an elementary school collection, especially those that need some poetry building!

This was a lovely book. The poems were short enough for kids to be interested in and the information in the poems was a great conversation starter for all ages - it makes them question what we've done as a society to these animals and how we can keep them from going extinct. The illustrations are marvelous. The colors and the flow of the artwork is appealing to the eyes. My two month old sat through the whole book, just enamored by the pictures alone.

I'm so-so on this. Part of that being that I don't usually get poetry, so keep that in mind with my rating and review. I liked the illustrations. I could see animal lovers enjoying the pictures. The poems, too. Some poems I liked. Some I didn't. One conflicted a bit with me. A couple of imagery uses didn't work for me. But overall, not bad. I think my favorite of the poems is about the Zebra. A shame the kangaroo's wasn't better.

A poetry book about wild animals. Perfect for second grade to use as a companion piece to animal research projects. After students complete their research report, they could write a poem about their animal. The poems are short and rhyme! ( I love rhyming). The illustrations are bold, using dark lines to add shape. I particularly like the polar bear picture in the water; he was hard to notice at first.

An absolutely beautiful book both in language and in art. This collection of animal poems exquisitely describes each jungle animal in its natural setting. The poems are entertaining without being silly or full of puns. The striking illustrations were created using woodblock prints and watercolor. This is definitely a must-have for any poetry collection or animal lover.
Sandy
A massive and powerful collection of poems and woodcut/watercolor art in an oversized, thundering presentation. Accessible in every way- readable text, recognizable images, and naturally executed rhyming verses. Works for every age and purpose, including mentor text for younger and older writers.

Who doesn't love the theme of wild animals. Within this book, these animals are portrayed as beautiful creatures through illustrations and poetic form. Readers of all ages will love the description of each animal and may even want to try and implement this writing style themselves!

My students loved the poems in this book, and I even learned some vocabulary words. Each page is a poem about a new wild animal from jaguars to pandas to kangaroos. Incredible woodcut illustrations enhanced with watercolors. I had first graders writing poetry after reading this book!
Andi
My son loves this book!!! Simple enough for him to read, yet the poems aren't dumbed down. Every illustration is just amazing and larger than a standard sized PB. Absolutely stunning work, after checking it out of the library, we've decided to add it to our own library... : )

This is a good 1st grade book because of the great illustrations. It is a poetry book. The author just explains the different types of animals in the wild. Like the tiger, the elephant.. etc. It is a good book to introduce animals. It is nonfiction.
Jennifer
This book was full of charming wordplay that you would except from very well-formed poetry. The pictures inside become larger-than-life, showing each wild animal in its best light. Any one of the poems could be added to supplement any lesson.

This is a fun book of poems about various animals, mainly found in Africa and China. Each poem is short, rhyming and lyrical and the illustrations are gorgeous. This is a good poetry book for children and would be great for reading aloud.
Denise
Elliott writes short poems for some pretty amazing animals. The woodcuts are bright and wonderful. This would be fun to read aloud to kindergartners and young elementary school children, but would work well one-on-one with some preschool children.
Kim
The vibrant illustrations and energetic poems about animals in the wild make this a delight to share with second graders to introduce a poetry unit and we talk about what separates poetry from prose.
Karla
I love these illustrations - look like woodcuts with watercolors. Strong pictures of wild animals to match clever poems that celebrate each one. Animal lovers will enjoy this one. Wonderful!
Marilyn
Elliott compares an elephant to a cloud (very successfully, I'll add), a panda to an ice cream flavor and starts his Rhino poem, "A horn stuck on a boot-like face". Clever and fun.

Vicki
This book wasn't as well received by my PJ storytime group as I would hope. It's a book in verse about animals in the wild. Still glad I shared it. Interesting illustrations.
Peg
Stellar writing and art! Meade and Elliott are quite a team. Evocative brief poems, with words brought to life with gorgeous woodcuts. My favorite? The tiger and the star!
Kate Hastings
Grades 2-6. Beautiful woodcut illustrations accompany a variety of poetic forms-- couplets, limericks, etc. Animal focused. Great for 5th grade poetry unit.
The Reading Countess
Beautiful illustrations take the reader through the wild to experience animals up close. Great for primary teachers as a mentor text.
Edward Sullivan
Excellent animal poems illustrated with beautiful woodcut pictures. From the same pair who brought you the equally excellent On the Farm.
Donalyn
Bold woodblock print illustrations and playful, precise poems showcase popular wild animals like lions, rhinos, and wolves.

David Elliott is the author of THE COOL CRAZY CRICKETS and THE TRANSMOGRIFICATION OF ROSCOE WIZZLE. He says of AND HERE'S TO YOU!, "My neighbor’s rooster and I were having a disagreement. I wanted to sleep in the morning; he wanted to crow. The rooster won, of course. The first verse of AND HERE'S TO YOU! is a tribute to his victory and to the joys found in simply following your nature."
