Incredible story, ok book. The Hoyts are amazing and are making a positive difference in the world which is great. I know I should have been more inspired by the book than I was. I really was impressed by their father/son devotion to each other and their desire to race together, but had a harder time with their desire to commit so much of their time to running (always impressed by their racing results and dedication to persevere). That much focus on racing makes sense now as racing and public sp...more
In the immortal words of the late, great John Hughes character John Bender: "Devoted" really pumps my nads!
It's tough to find a good story, and in the modern sports era It's even tougher to find a good sports story. Between Kobe Bryant, Ben Roethlisberger, Tiger Woods, and Barry Bonds etc. It's refreshing to read a story where the words champion & scandal aren't interchangeable. "Devoted" is a great story, so much so in fact, that the not so great story telling is easy to overlook. To its cr...more

Anyone who has seen the Hoyt's run will enjoy hearing their story from the beginning. I only gave it 3 stars, because I felt the writing was not great, and there was a little too much self-praise for how great they are. They are an inspiration, that goes without saying, but hearing someone go on and on about all the publicity they've received and all the people who are inspired by their story starts to feel a little icky after awhile. I enjoyed more learning about how Dick & Judy fell in lov...more
I've seen billboards with inspirational messages about these guys but didn't really know anything until this book. I haven't really thought much about what it was like to have special needs or raise a special needs child in the 60s and before. Attitudes and opportunities have certainly changed. This was a great story. Makes me want to run... or jog... or walk more. The only part that makes me sad about their story is that his marriage fell apart because of the time he spent training and racing a...more
Great story; really inspiring!! Every time I hear about what these men have accomplished, I am so moved. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is because it seemed to go back and forth in time a lot, which made it a little confusing to understand at times. But other than that, it was wonderful! Prior to reading this book, I just knew about their marathon and triathlon racing career, but this book also talked a lot about the work the family (mostly the mom and Rick, the son) did to...more
I had seen the billboards and a brief piece during an Ironman on the Hoyts but didn't really know their story. This book is very inspirational and beautiful. I cried many times at the love and devotion that this father and son share. I think what surprised me the most is how Dick (the father) is so clear about Rick racing and Rick being an athlete. Rick is a very active participant in all their 1000+ races.

I continue to be touched everytime I see the Team Hoyt video on Youtube (set to "I can only imagine.") I saw this book advertised in my local newspaper and was anxious to read it. I really enjoyed learning the story behind the video. I was very inspired by what I read and found that it gave me more of a desire to do hard things. What a devoted father! Loved it!
Really inspiring story! Not only about the physical demands he put on his body for his son but also because of the relationship he and his son grew to have race after race. A true story of unconditional love between a father and son. The letter Rick wrote to his dad was by far my favorite part. Excellent parenting advice that we should all remember.
