Much better paced and written than the first novel in the series. The writing is crispier, the characters are more three dimensional. Childs shows more tells less.
Theo finds herself investigating the "accidental" death of one's of Charleston's rich and famous man. The poor man died over one's of Theo catering table cloth. Childs also found a way to bring alive Charleston's historical district without falling into the book/guide travel trap.

Theodosia Browning's life has calmed down since almost being killed a few months ago. Bethany has moved on but Drayton and Haley are still working for her at the Indigo Tea Shop and she has hired Miss Dimple to do her books a couple of days a week. They are planning several different types of tea parties including a Mystery Tea Party to increase business.

This is not the mystery of the smoking gun. It is the mystery of the exploding gun. When the signal pistol explodes at a yacht race, Theodosia is right in the middle of the fray. She watches as the man's lifeless body falls to the ground, brushing against one of her very own tablecloths as he goes. While most believe it to be nothing more than a tragic accident, Theo isn't so sure and can't resist the urge to involve herself, and her friends, in the investigation. Will Theo find the killer, or w...more

3 1/2 stars would be more accurate.
Once the mystery gets going, I really started to enjoy the story. The in between stuff can be a bit dull. I love the stuff about the tea and Charleston, but I feel that the author goes into so much detail just to prove that she knows all about tea and Charleston. Too easy to figure out the murderer.

I finished this one last night. I didn't quite enjoy it as much as the first one though. I never felt very connected to the suspects - I even had some trouble keeping them all straight! (Disclaimer: baby brain strikes again! I don't think that this is a particularly difficult book; it's just that I can't seem to focus for very long these days!) I enjoyed hearing about all the teas and the yummy sweets and scones too! The ending was a little disappointing, hinging on some circumstantial evidence...more

The best parts of this book were the descriptions of the tea shop and of Charleston's Historic District. It made me want to visit these charming places (and to hope that there is a place similar to the Indigo Tea Shop in real life). The characters, though, were not as developed as I would have liked. It seemed like there were many motives to go around without enough clues to let the reader play amature detective as the book progressed. So, while I had fun reading, I've experienced better in this...more
Remember the sitcom "Family Ties"? It didn't have sex, violence,or really anything "objectionable", but it also was one of the most insipid shows ever aired. And when I realized that it bored me stiff, I almost felt guilty for disliking a "G" rated show. Well, that is exactly what I felt for this book; the setting was lovely (and I've actually been to Charleston!), but that was it. Even the food and the tea were boring. If these people actually exist, I'm not interested in a closer relationship.
The second in the series of Tea Shop mysteries. Theodosia Browning is the tea shop owner and amateur sleuth. A really good "cozy" mystery. The descriptions of Charleston SC are wonderfully expressive and you can almost feel the breezes and see the dogwood blossoms opening. The characters are well developed and quite an array of them. A quick and satisfactory read. However, you will come away with an intense desire for a good cup of tea! I am looking forward to reading the entire series.
I agree with jenvince & also enjoy this series - I really like the character of Theo - a modern, no-nonsense woman running her own business, she keeps a level head as she unravels the mystery. Also liked the character of Drayton and enjoyed reading about teas I have never heard of but may someday try. I copied out the scone recipe - have never made any before.

fans of Charlaine Harris mysteries, fans of Maggie Sefton and tea lovers.
The second book in Laura Childs' Teashop Mystery series, this book finds Theodosia and company investigating another murder in historic Charleston. The day of annual yachting race between two exclusive yacht clubs, an antique pistol used to mark the end of the race explodes, killing a 60-year-old mover and shaker. This leaves his 20-something bride a very rich (and not altogether grief-stricken) widow.

This was another fun book in the Tea Shop Mystery series. I really love all of the tea information. I've been to Charleston, S.C. before and reading this series makes me want to return.
I find Theodosia, Haley & Drayton to be interesting characters, but it seems like the murder suspects and other mystery-specific characters aren't quite as well developed.

Liked it! This one is about oh, surprise, surprise, a murder. At a yacht club race between rival clubs the final gun is shot and the person firing it dies. The gun backfires and shoots him in the head. The man is 60 something with a trophy 20 something wife, hmmmm, you'd think she might be a suspect. so many suspects. But Theodosia wraps up the murder in the last few pages.
Good quick reading.

Childs’s Gunpowder Green was a delightful read, the second in the Tea Shop Mystery series. As with the first book, Theo has her friends and coworkers Drayton and Haley to help her investigate the sudden death of a well-to-do Charlestonian that occurred before their very eyes. It’s a rather typical mystery novel plot and is done well, but what draws me to the series is the setting and characters that Childs crafts. It makes me want to walk into the Indigo Tea Shop and have a cup of whatever new b...more
These are fun cozies. I love all the teas and different tea parties and some of the recipes at the end.
Theodosia is catering a tea for the members of the yacht club. When Oliver Dixon, an elite member of Charleston, is handed the antique gun to end the race, he shoots it into the air and falls dead in front of hundreds of by-standers. Was it an accident or murder?

A pistol explodes at a boat race where Theodosia and company are serving refreshments. Was it an accident or something else? I missed reading this installment of the tea shop mysteries although it's been on my shelf. Good read, the plot was pretty good, and the characters and settings good as always in her books.
I enjoy this series - The Tea Shop Mystery Series. this time Theo witnesses a murder right in front of her at the yatch race and feels she must find the murderer. I love books set in Charleston since I visited there. It has a very unique flavor and it's fun to relive the area and all it's special charms.
This is a great little series of books. Perfect if you are in the mood for light reading. I'm really starting to love the characters, even though in this book you really don't get to know them personally as much as you do in the first book. I will be reading more in this series when I'm in need of a quick light read.
Ahh, the sweet little cozy mystery. I keep them separated from general mysteries on my shelves because in a real mystery, the owner of a tea shop would not put herself smack dab in the middle of a murder investigation. It is laughable to see this happen in the series, but I really like the books for the background in tea. I am really getting an education, and would be happy if the books were only about a little tea shop. I like the recipes that are included in the back of the book.

This is the second of this series I've read. The first left me feeling that I'd give the next one a try. But I really didn't like this one at all. In the end I just dashed through the last 2/3 of the book. Onto the recycle stack.
The writing is a little stiff...characters named Theodosia and Drayton. The dialogue is not the greatest, but I love the setting. Charlston where there is so much southern charm and history and of course gardens! Easy to visualize...and the mystery is okay too. The tea descriptions get a little long and detailed so I skip most of that...makes for a very quick read.

Theo is doing a little poking around again...but this time it is the murder of a Charleston elite. This time she has a little bit of help from Drayton and Haley...but she also gets help from Burt Tidwell. Another page turner, I just couldn't put it down.
