There are so many out of the way places in New Mexico I am surprised the author picked so few. But the ones he writes about deserve his straight forward observations. If only his writing were as eccentric as the things he is writing about. Don’t get me wrong. It is well done. It’s just that a trip to the Lightning Field is far stranger and more bizarre than he lets on. Same thing with the Christ in the Desert monastery. So far I'm irritated by his self-centered writing, but I'm interested enough in reading about New Mexico to keep plowing through it. Definitely comparable to Bruce Chatwin, whose books I loved in spite of his arrogance.
