This is a sweet story of East meets West, except it is Englisch meets Amish. Englischer Jenny has seen the horrors of war and become a victim herself. Amish Matthew has borne the sorrow of losing a wife and raising his children with the help of his sister. When Jenny decides to recover at her Amish grandmother's home, Matthew's adolescent flame for the Jenny he knew as a child is rekindled. Jenny gradually remembers Matthew and the spark that was there as young teenage girl begins to glow.

Barbara Cameron's book, A Time to Love, has a sweet message about love, even though it reads like it was written by a PR committee for the Amish. Superficially it's lovely, but if you read just a wee bit deeper, the characters seem a bit flat, there are many inconsistencies, and the Kindle version is full of formatting errors. This seems to be a book that was banged out in something of a hurry without much editing and attention.

Sometimes when I want to get back to the simple things in life, I will pick up a book about Amish Life and read it. While A Time to Love, by Barbara Cameron may be a work of fiction, it teaches us about what is really important in life...love and family.
Jenny has come home, at least the only real home she has ever known. She needs to heal, physically, mentally and spiritually. She's been severely injured and now all she needs is time...to rethink, recover, and reacquaint herself with someone fro...more

OH my gosh, this book was so terrible. I read the whole thing though because it got to be so terrible that it was entertaining. And I was waiting for books to be available at the library and had nothing else to do while I fed my baby. It's a story about a woman who got injured from a car bomb while reporting on "the children" in a "war-torn country" which was located "overseas" then went to live with her Amish grandmother in Lancaster, PA to "heal". I can't tell you how many times she fretted ab...more
Amish romances apparently aren't my thing because I'm a lazy "Englischer." Super special war-is-hard-on-children correspondent Jenny King is injured by a car bomb. She goes to her Amish grandmother's house to recover and ends up falling for Matthew, an Amish man whom she kissed once as a teen. He's conveniently a widower and father to 3 adorable and well-behaved children. Which is also convenient because Jenny loves kids and might be (gasp!) infertile due to her injuries. They have dinner togeth...more
My husband recently purchase me a Kindle and one of the free books I downloaded and just finished reading was A Time to Love by Barbara Cameron. I haven't read Amish fiction in a long time, though I do remember enjoying Beverly Lewis and Wanda Brunstetters' books.

There were several issues I had with the novel. Jenny's character made no sense to me, she is supposed to be a modern woman, educated, well-traveled, and I'm going to guess a reporter on a national scale which is no small career feat. Yet she shows little political understanding, they don't even mention which war, ect. and gives up her career in a heartbeat to marry Matthew. If she didnt want to travel any longer, why couldnt she have gotten a job as a reporter for the local station or magazines...more
Jennie King is a television reporter reporting on the poverty of children in foreign countries. She was injured in a car bombing while on assignment, restricting her abilities to perform her job duties. While in the hospital, her Amish grandmother sent her a handmade quilt with a note welcoming Jennie to her Amish home for healing.

This was a free download for my nook. After a cursory glance at some of the other reviews, I find myself wondering if this free version is actually an early version, and perhaps some things have changed prior to publication. Definitely the characters' last names have changed: in the version I read, Jenny's last name is Miller, and Matthew's is... I can't remember, but it's not Bontrager. Also, it seems the version I read is shorter than what some others have read. Anyway, this is a slightly diff...more
I'm not a big reader of romances, especially modern romance stories. A Time to Love, however, is a love story as opposed to a romance. I found the characters believable and inspiring. I've always been enamored by the Amish, and this book meet my expectations with the exception of the author stating that farmers had been killed when their tractors rolled over on them. Since the Amish don't use tractors to plow or harvest, I found this statement a tad disturbing. Overall, though, I did enjoy the b...more

A Time To Love isn't your average Amish romance read! Instead the author takes a very current subject, the war overseas and its impact on the most innocent of victims the children, and tells us how Jenny King the main character of the story felt compelled to get those childrens voices heard.

I have to start out by saying this book was absolutely fantastic.
5 out of 5 stars, easily.
I was able to review this book through NetGalley, and it's probably been one of my favorite books I've yet reviewed by them!
A Time To Love had me hooked from the first page, and I could hardly put it down.

Jenny had been through the worst war could offer. Although she was not a soldier, she still had been severely injured by the IED that had been thrown at her as she reported on the plight of children in the midst of a war.
She felt like she had lost everything, her Looks, her ability to move and speak easily and fluently, and her career.

I almost always download the Free Fridays books since I love to read and am willing to try almost any type of book once. Romance novels are fun but not close to the top of my most-read list due to the fact they are almost always non-believable.

I got this book because it was a freebie from Amazon, and because I read an article about the "bonnet romances" that are becoming popular and I wanted to know more. For a free book, it's a very good romance but if I paid the 7 bucks the paperback costs I would be pissed.

I love Barbara Cameron’s books. It’s not just a romance story. There are always elements of mystery included in her writing. In this story, the first in the Quilts of Lancaster County, I found the characters to be very believable and yet leaves you with just enough questions to make people like me want to research more of the Amish lifestyle. The difference between the two worlds, that of the Englisch and the Amish is well defined yet the author shows us the parallels between the two cultures. T...more
I feel about Amish romances the same way I feel about any romance novel-I need a storyline that involves more than does he or doesn’t he like me and oh you don’t understand me - yes I do too. At my age, I might find them sweet but not terribly engaging. I need characters to face conflict other than romantic ones and grow as people. That said, I really liked A TIME TO LOVE.

I thought this was a very sweet and touching story --- I appreciated how Jenny when to be with her Grandmother to heal from a terrible accident, and I can completely understand how she became endeared to the Amish faith and way of life after been a victim of a war time explosion.
The story of Jenny & Matthew was sweet -- and every time I read Matthew saying "Jenny" -- I heard Forest Gump's voice. ;0)
