I didn't think it was possible to take this series in a darker direction before wrapping it up, but it was done by the process of combining the original premise with a bunch of people like the ones in the old Twilight Zone episode about turning against each other and blaming each other in a crisis.
Thus, instead of a single grudge against a single offender, a town ends up with a bunch of disappeared people sent to hell, and a bunch of others on their way there when they die. My only problem with

Shelves: mangas
This manga was very dark and twisted at times. The entire idea of revenge it revolves around is interesting. It was a bit of a cliffhanger ending that left me wondering what happened next. I really liked how Ai's character is explored a little more.
