I was very disappointed with this book. My friend had told me about it and it sounded really cool so I got it. I'd never really been into Redwall (the very popular series by this author), but this book is very different than those, so I decided to give it a try, unfortunately it only served to remind me of all the reasons I had never finished a Redwall book.
The story is about a boy and his dog, two unfortunate beings unwillingly taken onto the Flying Dutchman(pre-curse). They are mistreated...more

As a child (and still today, I must confess), I was enchanted by Brian Jacques’ Redwall series. He came and spoke at my elementary school and is just as nice as one would expect him to be. When I saw that Jacques (pronounced Jakes) had written a new book that involved people, I was hesitant: not because I thought it wouldn’t be good, but because I felt like it meant the days of talking animals were over.
I shouldn’t have been skeptical. Castaways of the Flying Dutchman is a gr...more

CASTAWAYS OF THE FLYING DUTCHMAN-Ok
Jacques, Brian
The Flying Dutchman! The legend of the wind-tattered ghost ship and its mad sea captain, cursed to sail the seas forever, has been passed down throughout the centuries. But what of the young boy and his dog who were trapped aboard that ship? What became of them?
In this, one of Jacques' most original adventures, the castaway boy and dog set off on an eternal journey of their own, braving icy wind and waves to arrive at strange shores, and...more

This book is not part of the Redwall series, but I enjoyed it. The main characters, a boy and his black labrador retriever, were on the Flying Dutchman as it sank, but being innocents, were spared the fate of the ghost ship, and instead travel magically through time to help avert injustice. They are given some special skills, including a telepathic link between themselves (which lends a lot to knowing what they are thinking and helping the story along.)

This was a great book and would be perfect for Junior High age kids. Not very much sea adventure in the second half of the book but still good. The audio book for all of these is better than normal because they have differernt people reading the voices for every character. None of that men trying to do women voices and strange accents stuff that can otherwise give you the creeps in audio books.

In Brian Jacques' first departure from his Redwall series, he weaves a supernatural tale about a boy and his dog, two "survivors" of a shipwreck who must traverse the earth until they ... is it sad that I can't remember what they have to do? I did like this book, but it wasn't enough to make me pick up the sequels (yet, anyway).

Good book! Jaques has hit it again!
This follows Ben and Ned as they fight for freedom and justice, while also trying to escape from the ship, the Flying Dutchman, and the ship's captain, Vanderdecken. Ben and Ned are saving a place called Chapelvale in this story, and it's hard to condense it too much, so I won't try. :)

I listened to this full cast audio tape. It's narrated by the author and I love his accent. (It reminded me of how the Beatles talked. Am I showing my age?) Anyway, the story was just OK. It was a good mystery but the whole Flying Dutchman angle was kind of superfluous. Middle school boys would probably like it.

Great idea about an innocent boy and his dog aboard the Flying Dutchman. I loved reading about how the ship got cursed etc., but the second half where the boy and his dog are on land helping discover clues to an old ladies family treasure, are not as good. It felt a bit like two separate books stuck together.

A well written novel by the beloved Brian Jacques of redwall. No adorable rodents in this book. This is an adventure that involves not only the legendary flying dutchmen, but the clever wit of an ageless boy and his dog. Not what I expected, but I was pleasantly surprised with the book anyways.

The book starts with the story of the Flying Dutchman through the eyes of a boy and a dog. After the castaways' fate is established, it goes on with two stories of what happens on their 'eternal journey'. I enjoyed the book, although it did drag a bit here and there.

I really enjoyed this book. Not bad for Jacques first non Redwall book. I really liked the characters. Fast paced. Great story of bravery, friendship, and learning to stand up for what is right. Wonderful story for fourth - eighth graders (and beyond).

Very interesting idea, but I found it to be pretty dull. I was excited to hear that Brian Jacques was doing something outside of Redwall, since it was obvious for a while he had run out of ideas, but wasn't at all impressed.

brings an old legend to life in a new, intriguing way...classic conversations and typical Brian Jacques pseudo-mystery plot, quite wholesome, a positive ghost story--perfect for a before bedtime read

I didn't dislike this book, but it was a bit of a struggle to finish. I didn't find either the story or the characters really compelling, nor did I feel the book was particularly creative.

I like the second half of this book (which I would give a clear 5 stars to) much better than the first 2 stories! I reread The Village often!

This is probably my favorite Brian Jacques book. It is a great adventure and very well written, but what else do you expect from Jacques?
