Książka ukazała się w Czechosłowacji w 1961 roku i natychmiast stała się bestsellerem, kultową książką lat sześćdziesiątych, biblią kontestatorów i prawdopodobnie najsławniejszą pozycją w dorobku autora. Krytyka okrzyknęła, że Karel Michal swoją "bezwstydną oryginalnością i oryginalną bezwstydnością" wniósł świeży powiew do literatury humorystyczno-satyrycznej...

I wanted to like it, but I think the translation didn't capture whatever makes Michal magical. From the translator's commentary: "The book was refreshingly funny and the general reader, inevitably politicised to a greater or lesser degree, as was much of the public Central and Eastern Europe under Communism, relished the mysterious aura that accompanied many works of the incipient political Thaw which were either genuinely original (in the climate of a literature largely controlled from the poli ...more

This delightfully quirky book of supernatural short tales was originally published in 1961. In each story, ordinary Czech citizens (living under communism) encounter supernatural beings, with unexpected results. A few of the supernatural creatures are ordinary ghosts, a few others are specifically Czech entities, and the rest (for example the non-decaying dead cat that speaks in the second person) are presumably the author's complete invention. The setting (post-Stalin Communist Czechoslovakia) ...more

Wyszedł rok literatury czeskiej i rumuńskiej. Bo tam napisane zostały - bez dwóch zdań - najlepsze, najciekawsze i jednocześnie najbardziej poruszające książki, jakie w ciągu tych kilkunastu miesięcy czytałem.
Straszydła - od których dowiedziałem się od tłumaczki - rewelacyjnej Doroty Dobrew - wymykają się wszelkim klasyfikacją. W duchu "Szwejka" i jemu podobnych. W duchu najlepszych tekstów Hrabala, Pavla i tylu innych. I strasznie żal, że Michal tak wcześnie sam swoje życie zakończył, i że tak

this was a nice book to handle. A small, firmly bound hardcover, with a little ribbon attached for marking your place. It had illustrations too, but I didn't think they were so hot.
Michal reads a lot like Karel Capek. Clever stories to reveal the cultural and psychological workings of humanity. In Everyday Spooks, written in the 1960s, Michal uses tales of supernatural occurrences to not only reveal the flaws in humanity but to also poke at the "ordered" regimented socialist Czech society. These

Opowiadania o duchach - czeski humor w najlepszym wydaniu. A w formie audiobooka czyta te opowiadania m.in. Marian Opania, Jerzy Stuhr, Krzysztof Gosztyła, Krzysztof Globisz.
Rewelacja!

Ukázka, která mluví za vše:
"Co tu děláte," zeptal se štábní kapitán.
"Straším," odvětil duch hlasem větru, skučícího mezi trámy šibenice, "to vidí každý vůl."
