This book is pretty cool. It is a comic. It is an awesome book.

This little book contains three short comics. The first story summary is found in the book blurb above. Cute story about a smurf being bitten by a BZZ fly which then infects the bitten smurf. The bitten smurf turns purple and jumps around yelling "GNAP!" Evidently they become contagious because the infection spreads as the bitten smurf begins to bite other smurfs. Papa Smurf attempts to find a cure, but not before nearly the entire village of smurfs have been bitten. After capturing the BZZ fly...more

Sem...more

World War Schtroumpf

Who doesn't love the smurfs?? well if you don't then you suck!! I grew up watching the cartoons not knowing they originated from comics, now here we are reading the graphic novels. This particular edition has three separate stories. First is the tale of the purple smurfs, a plague running ragged over smurf village. Can papa smurf find and antidote before everyone is transformed? The second story is a smurf that wants to fly. Can he be creative enough to create something that will let him fly and...more

In case you haven't heard...the Smurfs are back! The little blue guys from the 1980's are making a comeback in the form of graphic novels aimed at children (and a movie near the end of summer.) This is the first in a series and contains 3 classic Smurf tales, including "The Purple Smurfs," "The Flying Smurf," and "The Smurf and His Neighbors." The stories retain the same silliness and humor as the 1980's television series. Children will be drawn to the colorful comic style and the Smurf antics a...more

Three smurf stories. An epidemic sweeps the Smurf village when a bug bites a smurf and he turns purple and mean. Soon the whole village is looking more purple than blue and it's up to Papa Smurf to find a cure before he's turned too. In the second story, can smurfs fly? One smurf will try anything to fly, and I do mean anything, but when he accomplishes his goal he's not as happy as he thought he might be. In the last story, one smurf just wants a little peace and quiet, but he soon finds there'...more

Always being a fan of the Smurfs, I was excited to see a new graphic novel being introduced to another generation of youngsters. This graphic novel doesn't let me down! Using one of the classic episodes from the cartoon series, a mysterious purple fly is biting smurfs and turning them mean & purple. As Papa Smurf tries to find an antidote, the purpleness is spreading. Two more stories are included and will entertain preteen readers. The reading level is high, so 4th grade and younger might s...more

I found this little book absolutely Smurfy. :-). I'm a huge Smurf fan. The Purple Smurf is an episode that has stayed with me since I saw it as a kid. When I look back, I realize that this was my first exposure to zombies (and the idea of the end of society)! I was talking to someone recently and she even said Night of the Living Dead was a rip-off of this story, ha ha. Really, it's an interesting little story and I'm glad I have it in graphic novel form as well. Oh and at the end, the book talk...more

If any of you know me (and some of you do), you would be asking out loud "Why is ol' tentoes liking a Smurf book. Well, the answer is that this is the closest Peyo ever got to doing a zombie story featuring the Smurfs. Becoming a Purple Smurf is a reaction to getting bit by the infected. The transformation from blue and smurfy to Purple and 'Gnap' is almost instantaneous. The infection spreads quickly, as Papa Smurf tries to find a cure, but he is running out of time, and fellow smurfs.

Way before the 80's animated TV show and the action figures there were Smurf comics! This volume contains three short stories, the first of which has never been published in English before out of concern it would be offensive. In the original story the "bad" Smurfs are black, but this version follows the animation and makes them purple, which is probably a good idea. The stories are okay; I think kids will like it, and there is a new Smurf movie on the way to lure a whole new generation into buy...more

Like most children of the '80s, I loved the Smurfs cartoon series. The Smurfs have returned in a new CGI animated feature and reprinting of the comics that launched the series in effort to introduce the characters to a new audience. (Or, more likely, to get the now adult fans of the original Smurfs to buy blue plastic stuff in fits of nostalgia.)

The book was OK--even if Papa Smurf was kind of a jerk in this one. I will say that I am surprised by how closely Hanna-Barbera adhered to the source m...more

GNAP GNAP!
Kalau seekor Smurf sampai tergigit lalat Bzz, maka mereka akan keliyengan, lalu gluk .. gluk ..., dan kemudian tubuh mereka berubah menjadi hitam. GNAP GNAP!

Some nice cartooning.
Absurd, though, that the original Black Smurfs are still being refereed to as Purple Smurfs. A country whose (American) football team, in the bloody capitol of the country, is named "Redskins", but anything even vaguely 'black' must be tippie-toed around...
Also bad move by the publisher for not publishing the Smurf stories in order originally published.

I really love Peyo's cartooning! Such beautiful linework, great expressions and environments. The first story "Purple Smurf" is a lot of fun. The second a bit less so (great art but it drags on too long) and the third was just okay. I'll definitely pick up some more volumes. Just glad to finally get to read these comics I've wondered about for so long!

The smurfs were very smurftastic. Even smurferific. Just try not to get smurfed by a people looking at you weird because you are smurfing so loud because you are replacing all the instances of smurf with a double entendre. Very amusing, quick read, but lacks the compelling characters of a Tintin or Asterix.

GNAP!

termasuk Papa Smurf!
Aduhh... gmn jadinya ya? Pasti seru dan menegangkan.. hihi..
Philip Armstrong
I god I love this art I could just crawl up in it and die.

That being said, Purple Smurfs was a good story. The other two less so. Flying Smurf was an extended one note joke, and Smurf and His Neighbors had some amazing art but was otherwise pretty thin.

very funny
it begin like that: once the insect bite the smurf, the smurf will turn purple . and so , when the purple smurf bite the tail of the blue smurf, the blue smurf will turn purple. it will spread very fast.

Ya ampun! Berusaha melacak ingatan masa kecil ttg Smurf tp tdk berhasil. Fiuuuh..

Two of the stories from the 1963 and a third story were recently re-published by Papercutz in this volume. The three stories are simpler, probably good for elementary school kids just discovering the Smurfs.

This graphic was sadly disappointing since I watched the Smurfs growing up. Papa Smurf is unusually mean and Smufette is never mentioned.

Another good smurfs graphic novel. It is fun to compare this with the animation that came after, and see how close the stories were.

Nice easy, cute and funny to clear my mind book before starting in on another longer book.
Emily
The original smurfs are as fun and familiar as those I liked on Saturday morning cartoons.
Polly
Cute! Not the best Smurfs comic collection I've read, but worth reading once.
Bubba
I had forgotten how they use "smurf" as verb, adverb, adjective, noun, etc.

Pierre Culliford, known as Peyo, was a Belgian comics artist, perhaps best known for the creation of The Smurfs comic strip.
