I’ve been reading a lot of dark and violent books lately. I recently joined two challenges, both of which requires me to read those kind of books. Not that I’m complaining or anything because it’s those kind of books I enjoy reading the most. I just thought I need to read something different, something light and positive, something –as my friend Tina prefers to call them–fluffy. As it turns out, Wendelin Van Draanen’s Flipped was the right book for the break from gritty no More...

###Update 20 Sept 2011###

[Juli] Pertama kali aku bertemu Bryce, aku jungkir balik. Pasti karena matanya. Ada sesuatu di matanya. Matanya yg biru dengan

This book was climbing onto my favorite's shelf as soon as I saw the cover and when I realized it was a movie I'd seen and adored, it made itself confortable and sat snuggly next to my other fav. books.

OMG! OMG! OMG! Ga filmnya ga bukunya. Really really really like it like it! ;]

Ceritanya si teenager banget, tapi pesan moral yang hendak disampaikan buat semua umur.

Bercerita tentang Julie Baker yang sejak pertama kali bertemu Bryce Loski sudah "tergila-gila". Sedangkan Bryce sebaliknya, sebisa mungkin menjauhi Julie.

"The first day I met Bryce Loski, I flipped. Honestly, one look at him and I became a lunatic. It's his eyes. Something in his eyes. They're blue, and framed in the blackness of his More...

I must say, Flipped is a great book and also has a great teaching, as well as being huge amount of fun to read because of the author's fabulous techniques. One of the techniques the author uses in the book is showing different perspectives throughout the book, to be speciefic: the way he describes the point of view from Juli's and Bryce's perspective, also a very fun technique since you're always wondering what the other character in the story thinks too. Another entertaining technique is the q More...

Flipped

A seven year old girl, Juli, falls for a boy in her class, Bryce—well, maybe more for his amazingly beautiful blue eyes. Perhaps this might not sound as interesting as your favorite romance series, Twilight, or illustrate true love like Romeo and Juliet. But, Wendelin Van Draanen’s new romance novel, Flipped, will definitely flip you off your feet. She has her own unique way of demonstrating More...

I'm giving this book a five because it is perfectly crafted plus a good story, good characters, great voice. The author's voices for the two viewpoints are perfect! I liked the protagonists and the supporting characters, especially his grandfather and her dad. The story teaches good lessons/values. It's also funny! And sometimes sad. I liked the way the reader's perspective also "flips" as we begin to figure out what is really going on. I'm a nature girl who has always loved to climb trees, so I More...

A quick read that quickly pulls you into the lives of a boy and a girl, showing each person's point of view. The book's format was unique because it actually "flipped" from one persons perspective to the other person's perspective. The author does a great job of adding depth to the story as the book progresses and the relationship grows from a childhood crush to a young friendship. I really enjoyed how the book presented misconceptions that happens everyday in every relationship. This book will More...

When I first watched it on Movie2k.com, It reminds me of my elementary days of having a crush. Just like Julianna Baker. I Flipped when I saw that guy whom I really liked when I was in 6th grade.(But I didn't stalked him) :) ahahaha!

At first, Bryce Loski hated Juli ( in a way he was really annoyed at her), But Juli likes Bryce so much, then.. it Flipped! :D Bryce then likes Juli, and Juli ignores Bryce. I love the story itself, the essence of teenage love story. It may happened in real life. you More...

I loved it! I couldn't ask for two more engaging main characters, except maybe for Nick and Norah (although they would be for much more mature readers--this is something I would feel comfortable handing to someone under 14)

Similar to Nick & Norah's Ultimate Playlist, the story is told back and forth from the boy's & girl's point of view. I loved the humor, the chicken motif, and the unexpected depth and complexity of the story.

I didn't want it to end! Actually, it sort of ends at a beg More...

LOVED LOVED LOVED this book. I can't think of anybody to not recommend it t. One of my favorite reads this year. It's a lot like The Wednesday Wars, it's got that same feel-good vibe going on. My only gripe was the ending! There better be a sequel, or I'm going to Flip!

EDIT:
WTF, there's no sequel? WTF, Wendelin Van Draanen! The ending to Flipped felt so incomplete! I AM UPSETS :(

Recommended for Middle Schoolers: Finally read this yesterday and totally enjoyed it! The story centers around a boy and a girl, neighbors, who grow up together. Told in alternating chapters, the reader flips back and forth listening to the same incidents told from each character's point of view. In the end, the story is about being authentic and true to yourself, always a good lesson for us all.

And that did it. Even, I myself just flipped. And just like Juli Baker, I fell in love with Bryce Loski all over again. Kudos to Wendelin Van Draanen and to the director of the movie, Rob Reiner for having a job well-done on the adaptation. One of the best book adaptations, I must say. :)

I could see myself in both of the characters, Bryce and Juli, the fact that they both aren't quite sure about their feelings. I succumbed to the realism of the scenes. It's just so amusing to be acquainted with More...

Since tomorrow's a continuation of our hell week/s (and I haven't studied yet), I'll make this review short.

I want to say three things:

1. I cried when I read this. Oh, yeah I know, kinda lame. But I am not done yet: I cried over a tree (a sycamore, Platanus occidentalis, to be exact. I don't know how this tree looks like I have to google it ). This, I think, will give you an idea how much emotion you'll get when you read this. Or just proves how crybaby I am.

2. The Author (too long to type. Oh, More...

Imagine yourself sitting on your grandma's lap, the two of you merrily drinking hot cocoa on a chilly December afternoon, and all of a sudden, she narrates to you her love story. Yes, Flipped is one of those books - an adorable story set in the '80s of how love grew between Juli and Bryce despite the indifference of the latter and their personalities in general.

Girl likes Boy. Girl grew obsessed with Boy. Boy avoids Girl. Boy thinks Girl is weird. Girl finds out Boy's rotten demeanor. Girl does More...

One of the best coming-of-age stories I've ever read. More thoughts later.

***REVIEW UPDATE***

Even if the summary says that Flipped is a romance story, I believe that it is more than just cute romance. It is actually a coming-of-age tale about how Bryce and Juli and how each of them finally came to see who the other really is.

Juli was struck by Bryce’s dizzying blue eyes. And this is what made her persistently follow Bryce all the time. I remember being pathetically “in love” with a schoolmate’s More...

Flipped starts out looking like a funny light read. It flips back and forth between Bryce and Julianna and makes you laugh outloud. They meet in second grade when he moves into the house across the street. Julianna falls in love instantly and dreams of kissing this handsome boy with the black hair and awesome blue eyes. She pursues him with the same zeal that charactorizes her attitude toward life - above and beyond -120%. Bryce does not feel the same way at all. He avoids her like the plague, b More...

This is a very unique story and i really did enjoyed it a lot. Julianna Baker is crazy about Bryce Loski ever since she was seven years old. She's chased him around and daydreamed about sharing her first kiss with him for more than six years but Bryce never felt the same for her. What i really liked about this book is that it was written in a very unique way. Each chapter switches narration from Bryce talking to Juli talking and it gave me the chance to really understand both of their sides of t More...

Wonderful, wonderful! Absolutely loved it! The double point of view is clever and gives this story a little extra something above the rest of its kind.

Some complaints I’ve heard about the story were repetitiveness and vague ending, though I can hardly see those complaints being valid. Some reviews have argued that the rotation between the two characters (sometimes retelling the same scene or situation) is repetitive, but I enjoy learning the different interpretations. And yes there is a vague en More...
