What am I, a mental toddler? I giggled repeatedly during our bedtime read-along as the personified fruits and vegetables kept the sexual innuendo coming. The little plum pixies kept saying things like "Mine are juicy" and "Just look at mine, ripe and fine, you won't taste any sweeter." Yep, I'm 4.

Honestly, the writing isn't anything special. The illustrations steal the show. They're beautiful. A picturesque autumn read.

I love this one a bit less than other Elsa Beskow classics including Children of the Forest and The Sun Egg as it is a bit more clunky and challenging to read as a bedtime tale.

The characters, however, are very memorable and beautifully illustrated. It's a lovely seasonal edition to any Elsa Beskow collection for sure.

Only child Christopher meets the boy "Autumn" who walks with him through a garden and orchard where they meet the personified vegetation. Dialog and song pertaining to the coming change of season from summer/fall to winter occurs between the characters. Lovely and winsome art from the Swedish Elsa Beskow.

The songs were a little corny and not in with the time. But it was still a good story line and the art was detailed and very colorful. An older child might like this story to learn about autumn and what harvest time is.

Something's a little off with the translation and it's not guaranteed to hold a younger child's interest but the pictures are gorgeous.
