In order to understand this book, you have to read the first book in the series and play the Xbox game Halo: Combat Evolved. Even if you don't get it half the time, it's a good read!
This book is set in 2552, in the middle of a great war between humanity and a collective of alien races calling themselves the Covenant. This war reaches its peak intensity when a human ship discovers an ancient ring-world named Halo (hence the name of the book). The ship crashes there, and among the sur More...

The second book in the Halo series was not written by Eric Nylund, but by William c. Dietz. In my opinion, I think Eric Nylund is a better author, but since its a Halo book, that automatically makes it good. What was cool about this novel is that it's based on the actual game, so it was fun to say "Oh, I love that level." or "Haha, I always die there." The book answers the question "I wonder what Master Chief would do." because you can play exactly what happens in t

This book was such a let down and unworthy of the sequel to "The Fall of Reach". This book was a novelization of the first Halo game (Combat Evolved). That said, it reads like the author played the Xbox game and wrote play-by-play what happened, where he goes, what he shoots, etc. You're not reading a story, just a re-telling of what happens in the video game. If you play the video game, it's fine, because you're playing the video game, not reading a page of words of what someone did i

Halo The Flood is a sci-fi thriller based on the Halo series of video games. I particularly enjoyed this book because im a fan of the games, and this book basicly covers the events of the first game, Halo: Combat Evolved. My favorite character in the book is the main protagonist, John, AKA Master Chief. This is the character you play in the game, and hearing the actions that I played out from someone elses perspective really gave me a new sense of depth for the Halo Universe. My least favorite c

This book is the second in the series and not nearly as good as the first. This is not unexpected. This book, The Flood, is the novelization of the award-winning first-person-shooter (FPS) video game Halo. The first book was a prequel that gave the backstory and events leading up to the video game. It was able to cover a range of events such as the creation and training of the SPARTAN soldiers, ground battles, space battles, and character development. The Flood, however, has no choice but t

Halo: The Flood is a story that takes place during the the first video game, so in retrospect its the first game, but explained in greater detail. The genre is the standard sci-fi mystery, as well as some drama, but not a lot. The reason i picked this book was because the Halo universe has always intrigued me. And they have a lot of extra details that can only be found in the novels.

Second in the initial series of Halo novels, Dietz picks up where Nylund left off. More so than its predecessor, this book reads like straight-up military sci-fi without all the speculative philosophizing of a Joe Haldeman novel or the psycho-drama of a John Steakley book. Dietz's narrative and wordcraft are not as good as Nylund's, which is okay, since he has less drama to write about.

Dietz's The Flood describes the adventures of Spartan super-soldier "Master Chief" on the mysterious ring world known as Halo. Even without any familiarity with the game, I found the book enjoyable and entertaining as a science fiction novel in its own right.
Perhaps my only criticism of this otherwise completely enjoyable book is that at times it reads like it is a play-by-play re-enactment of a video game, but given that this is a Halo book, this is not altogether unsurpri More...

Thankfully I read The Fall of Reach before I attempted this, otherwise I would have been hard pressed to understand how Master Chief could survive the sheer amount of carnage in this novel. The background provided on the Spartan project and, probably more importantly, the MJOLNIR armour, goes a long way in justifying some of the madness in this book. Those of you who have read Dietz before this will know that he is no slouch when it comes to writing military science fiction. I refer, especially,

The Flood by William C.Dietz was not as good as the first book in this series The Fall Of Reach, but was still a four star book in my opinion. Answering questions from the first book and still having plenty of action and suspense that I would expect from this series. Halo The Flood introduces a new enemy to the ilustrious Spartan 117 or John. Even stronger than anything that both he or the covenant has seen. John must learn to fight them differently than the covenant because when he fights them

supposedly this is the second book in the series. (The Fall Of Reach was the first one). It and the other books in this series are full of action and don't have a dull sentance in them. Ok maby one or two dull sentances but they are exciting books. These books are great for reading when you are stuck at home and board out of your mind. Or when you have a strong craving to play the game but can't.

I've heard mentioned many times this is the 'way of the future' - Video games spawning books and movies rather than the other way around. This book is a perfect example of how not to do it.
After reading The Fall of Reach I had decent expectations for this one, and ended up pretty disappointed. The Fall Of Reach is an OK novel with elements of the game folded into it. The authour worked hard to make a storyline and plot that hung together and fleshed out what we knew from the game. More...

I much preferred the writing style in The Fall Of Reach, I felt that it was easier to immerse myself in, and I also felt the qaulity of dialogue was higher. It seemed Master Chief spent much time running from battle to battle, there were few back stories, and the whole book seemed less of a sequel and more of a half enthusiastic diversion to The Fall Of Reach. Overall, the character development were manageable (but in places alarming nonexistent), the setting were okay at the beginning but becam

The book i read this week was HALO: The Flood, by William C. Dietz. Halo is an epic series the flood is the 3rd book in the series. I gave this book a 3 out of 5 stars because i didn't start at the begining of the series i jumped right into the 3rd book. This book takes place in the year 2552. When humanity has taken controll of many galaxies. By surprise the Covenant army decided to ambush the humans. Thus begins the epic battle in the galaxies. Also this book brings back the a very special and

A little like comparing apples to oranges since I read the last Halo book in print & I listened to this one on audiobook, but I would say that I preferred the style of the first better, and attribute to different author styles perhaps?
This one does have a bit of a play by play feel, and I found that on occasion I'd halfway tune it out - 'yeah, yeah, aliens dying, blah, blah'. Lol, I know tsk tsk.

When I walked into reading this room , i assumed it would be like the video game its based off of, long, boring, and overrated. However it turned out to way more than I expected. This epic Sci Fi tell the story of the Spartan Super Soldier John/Spartan 117/Master Chief, as he awakes from cryosleep in the midst of a massive battle upon the ship The Pillar Of Autumn. Immediately John is placed with a massive amount of problems, as the ship's captain Captain Jacob Keyes, and the ships A.I. uni

Halo the Flood is a great book. It starts on board the Pillar of Autumn. The ship was forced to hyper jump blindly into space in order not to lead the covenant to earth. The Pillar of Autumn crash lands on "HALO", an Earth like ring built by the forerunners. The survivors take control of an alien butte that they name Alpha Base. The Master cheif is their only hope. He leads them in and out of battle against the covenant. Then a captured Elite, member of the highest alien race, tells th

I really liked the first book in this series but this one was dissapointing. The first half was FABULOUS, however once you find out what the flood is - it litterally overwhelms the book like a flood. WAY too much violence, which in itself does not bother me. It's just the same thing over, and over, and over, and over again. I talked to my husband who plays the halo games and he said the reason it had to be written that way is because this book had to follow the game. If you want to read the seri

I really enjoyed reading this book. Although it was kind of ruined since I "accidentally" read the next book before this. It had flashbacks to this so I kind of guessed what will happen very easily. Even though I sort of knew what was going to happen, I had a peasant time reading the different battles and firefights the ODST, Marines and the Chief Spartan went through. I'd recommend this book to every single person out there older than 13 and people who played the award-winning X-Box g

I'm really torn with this book. Some parts I'd like to give only 2 stars, but others were better and deserve at least 3 stars. The basic issue with this one is it's based on a first person shooter, and the author tried to keep it true to the game. I loved the Halo storyline, but the constant enter a room, shoot everyone/thing in sight, then move on, became very tiring. On the other hand, fans probably would have raised hell if it had not stayed true.

I felt that the Master Chief character deviated too much to the one created by Eric Nylund. Eric's Master Chief was more of a silent leader type but William's is more of a cocky gun-ho type.
The story is full of actions and plenty of supporting characters but seemed to be jumping around too much when telling the story from multiple points of view. I've never played the Halo game but I can imagine how the scenes play out on TV screen.

Barely escaping the battle on Reach Captain Keyes brings his ship back to normal space just to enter an even bigger battle with not only the Covenant a murderous alien culture but the flood an infectious species that feasts on all sentient life. The book starts out in action with John an elite soldier trained since he was young awakening from Cryo sleep on the Pillar of Autumn the only ship to make it out of reach before the Covenant took control of it. He wakes up and the ship is un

Halo: The flood is a jam packed sequel to the book: The Fall of Reach. This book takes place right after the covenant have destroyed the last line of defense before Earth; the planet Reach. The destruction of the planet Reach was a costly loss for the human race because not only was Earth unguarded, but nearly all the SPARTANS were vaporized and the only one that remained was SPARTAN 117(Master Chief). William C. Dietz's Halo book was much better thatn Eric Nylund's perception of the world of Halo. One of the reasons why I got this book is because it was not written by Nylund.
William C. Diet's writting style makes the storyline easy to follow and because I have played the video game I could picture in my head exactly what was going on it was just as fun or perhaps better than playing the game on my xbox.

This book was ok. I read it a few years ago when I was completely obsessed with Halo: Combat Evolved for XBox. It's prequel was written by a different author, and quite frankly, was better than "The Flood."
I have to give Dietz credit for attempting to write the story. It was interesting to read about the ODST's and Captain Keyes and how things had transpired with them.

Having read the Halo trilogy, I must admit this one didn't seem to catch my interest quite as much. I'm not sure if it's because it is just a retelling of the story that you play through in the first Halo video game or if it was because I didn't like this author's writing style, although I would definitely factor in the latter as a major suspect. The first book was really amazing and hard to put down, but this one was just ok. It focuses on all the events that happened during the Halo video g

This book takes place during the first Halo game, with Spartan-117 (John or the Master Chief) as it's protagonist. The book is basically a more detailed recount of the first game which was lacking cut scenes and other story telling mechanisms thus a lot of gaps and plot holes were left behind. This book is ment to tie up all those loose ends. It is important to note that this book starts and end exactly as the game did thus readers might be confused since Halo throws both the gamer and the reade

I just finished reading this book about maybe 30 minutes ago after having started it months ago(nearly a year ago actually) and not having had time to finish reading it. That's not to say it's a book that I didn't find myself wanting to finish, I just lacked the time to do so. It was written well, though I'd have to say I preferred Halo: The Fall of Reach. It could be the fact that this was written by a different author. I'm not saying William C. Dietz isn't an awesome author, he is of course, b
