Killing Rocks by DD Barant is the third book in The Bloodhound Files, and this is where it all comes together -- it has a fast-paced plot, snappy dialogue, relationships being tested, and great action. Killing Rocks has everything you could ask for and (in my opinion), the best book in the series. If you are not familiar with the series, it is a good, fun, urban fantasy with a twist: monsters (such as vampires, werewolves, and golems) exist in alternative worlds, and the heroine, Jace, is pulled...more

3rd in a series

I think the names of the books in this series is one of the best things about it. There is a hint into the plot within two words that also imply something positive about death. Its really fun. I'm kind of sad that the fourth book won't follow this trend, because honestly, its one of the reasons I read this series. I just love seeing how cleverly each book has been named. Oh, well.

Ok, I really enjoyed parts of this book and I really hated parts of this book. This seems to be my tr...more

Dear MR Barant,

I understand you are a tv writer. And your novels definitely read like scripts. Good scripts. Fun scripts. I hope you sell the tv rights and they become a series. Soon. With a big budget.

Before I realized that you wrote for tv, I thought, as of the second novel, that each novel would be an exploration of a different literary genre, first comic books, then myths and legends, and I wondered what would come next- poetry, perhaps, or texts? Then i realized each book should be seen as...more

"[What happens in Vegas, stays in vegas]... except for tatoos and STD's."

I enjoyed Killing Rocks, but it felt a little off.

Jace Valchek has always been shoot first, questions later; running headlong into one disaster after another. She's ballsy, tough, and flawed. One of her faults is trying to do everything herself, and maybe being a (more than a little) bit reckless. In Killing Rocks, it feels like she's just following new character Azura (Avatar! Azula! Azula!) around and uncharacteristically...more

3.1-This edition to the series just made me left me so confused. Major characters just did not show enough and when they did there was no explanations. The new character that was there too much in my opinion, was there for ?? I didn't get her part nor like her at all.
Jace the answer to this worlds woes finds herself jumping to another alternate universe, while it's invading on another ?* it's confusing, i don't think i ever really got it. So, there is this nasty man, the same one Jace needs to...more

An ancient and powerful shaman sorcerer named Ahaseurus yanked FBI criminal profiler Jace Valchek out of her dimension at the behest of the NSA in his own. They needed her to track and catch a human psychopath and terrorist named Aristotle Stoker. Her efforts, while...enthusiastic...haven't been all that productive, so she's still stranded in a world in which human beings make up a measly 1% of the population and are horribly outnumbered by vampires (pires), lycanthropes (thropes), and golems (l...more

Jace has only one real goal, capture Aristotle Stroker, the leader of the Free Human Resistance. Jace however is not sure how she feels about hunting Stroker. See he might be a bastard, a killer, a little bit crazy, ok a lot crazy; and his organization may make al-Qaeda seem warm and fuzzy but they are also human. The same as Jace and humans are an endangered species on this world. Conflicted about hunting him or not that is the one and only condition of her Employment with the NSA and getting t...more

Wow...D.D. Barant blasts us from one reality to another in this amazing addition to the "Bloodhound" files. When Jace Valchek finally has a chance to capture Aristotle Stoker, she and a group of Vampires, Thropes, and Golems arrive in Las Vegas to capture and take down Most Wanted's notorious trouble maker. Best laid plans often fall apart, and this is no exception. Jace is kidnapped and finds friends where enemies dwell and enemies where friends are supposed to be. Friends are not doing what th...more

If you enjoy a book full of Action, Were's, Vampires, Golem's and other supernatural beings you will love the Bloodhound Files. Jace was stolen from her world to an alternate world where Humans only make up 1% of the population. D.D. Barants world building is awesome, I can picture everything she explains with no problems at all. I seriously have no idea what else Jace could go through but I cant wait for D.D. Barant to tell me. In KILLING ROCK...more

OMG I flew through this book, it was SO good! If you haven't picked up this series you are missing out!!! Vampires, golems, shapshifters (were's) and under 1% of the population is human, AND in an alternate reality to boot.... This series has it all, and this book was non-stop action.

**SPOILERS**

Well looks like Stoker and Asher are STILL on the lam...guess that means there will be a few more books at least, LOL! I think Jace made a wise decision...she valued her friends more than catching or kil...more

KILLING ROCKS by DD Barant is an interesting urban fantasy. It is the third in the "The Bloodhound Files",Book One "Dying Bites and Book Two,"Death Blows".Although,
not necessary to read the first two, would help with the characters. This is my first read by this author. It has vampires, werewolves, golem's,supernatural beings, conflict, sorcerers, and alternate universe. This is a tense story with complex characters and storylines. If you enjoy a tense, fast paced, action packed urban fantasy with altern...more

Another great installment in The Bloodhound Files series! It’s fun and action packed with a fascinating setting and complex, lovable characters. I really like that this book gives us more answers to the ongoing mystery, more character development, and introduces a new player named Azura whose awesomeness rocks my socks off. One of my favorite things about this series is its wacky, offbeat sense of humor that never fails to make me chuckle, and Killing Rocks certainly continues in that vein. Over...more

Still loving this series, though this one took me a little longer to get through. I always have that problem when a book in a series I like "takes a field trip" to another location and loses some of the secondary characters. I enjoyed Killing Rocks, but one of my favorites in this series is Cassius, so I was missing him through most of the book. I also love Gretchen, who was mostly absent.

Despite that, the story was great, and I'm really excited for the next one. I love Jace and her snarkiness,...more

I love the world she created. It's fun to read and I adore the characters. It's funny that the villian is human and the victims are what we in our dimension consider monsters. She blends the alternate world with a lot of what's familiar. For instance, the whole Original Recipe label in our world is reference for KFC but Jace's new world it refers to human beings. Morphing a classic horror writer into a villan. There are so many pluses to reading DD Barant. She is an amazing writer and I am offic...more

So far this is my favourite instalment of the series. The book is fast paced, action packed and Jace is still the same snarky and sarcastic heroine I came to love. She's still after Stoker and Ahaseurus who seem to have formed an alliance with Silver Blue, an arms dealer and The Mantle, a golem rights group. Jace is heading out to Vegas to capture them, when all hell breaks loose yet again. Throughout the book she has to make some hard decisions, not only about her partner, but also how...more

Killing Rocks (The Bloodhound Files, #3)
Finished: 5/4/11

★★½

Killing Rocks is the third novel in The Bloodhound Files. This book thrusts FBI profiler Jace Valchek into the middle of interspecies war and another dimension, while tracking down a serial killer and trying to locate a powerful sorcerer that could send her home.

Sound like a like going on? Well, not so much. I found the pacing of this book fragmented. It kept jumping from dimensions and in and out of myth portals and the story never flowed for me. I especially was disappoint...more

Finally got my copy of D D Barant's Killing Rocks and managed to squeeze it in this week in between my ARC readings. And it wasn't too bad.
My only problem is the timespan between releases. It's getting to be too long, for I read too many other books during that time and I have a hard time trying to remember the details of the last book, so I talk a little while to piece this and that together. It's nothing wrong on the author's part, it just is what it is.

Basically Jace is still on her mission t...more

I got sidetracked with this one. Not the book's fault, RL just creeps up to you and you have no choice but to face it. :P

Anyway, DD Brant is one snarky witty writer and maybe has some anger management issues. :) Well maybe not true on the later part. :) It was really fun reading the book. At times when it gets apocalyptic she drop in a silly imagery to lighten the mood instantly.

There might be hints of spoilers................

As for the story... hum... I liked the 1st and 2nd book alot. This thi...more

This is an odd series for me to read and sometimes I wonder why I keep reading it. To date every book has only rated 2 stars for me. I find when I read them my mind wanders and I can't read too much at a time.

But with all that being said there are aspects that I really like about this story. The main one being Charlie, which is slightly odd as he is one of the secondary characters. For some reason Charlie always makes me laugh. I love how Jace gives him a hard time about being able to fix him wi...more

Favorite Quote: “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. Except for tattoos and STDs.”

Jace is back and ready for anything in the 3rd installment of the Bloodhound Files series. Cassius informs Jace at the end of Dying Bites that the sorcerer who was responsible for bringing her to this alternate world has been sighted and if she can find him and capture Stoker-she can go home. Magic words to Jace’s ears. But she should know by now that...more

I loved the first book in this series, so I've been giving the rest a generous chance. This book was good enough, but sometimes got on my nerves. I don't like the cavalier way the author handles time travel. I also sometimes feel that the multiverse aspect is overdone. And the heroine Jace is sarcastic too often - her character is not written with much emotional depth. Aside from that, the world the author created is very interesting. I love the details about all the paranormal creatures. This b...more

An action packed series with a lot of imagination! I really enjoy the story but found myself a little bored towards the end of this book, but perhaps I was anticipating too much :-). I love the characters and how they have developed throughout the story and look forward to seeing how things progress in the next book. If you are looking for a series that is full of action and mystery, this is a good one for you. Happy Reading!!

Giving it 2 stars since I finished it.

Ohhhhhh.... can we say MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT. This book isn't satisfied with taking over of the world - which I could go along with - but also with flipping btwn realities, adding in mythology, magic rules that change constantly, characters that hop in and out and since it's from her POV you never find out why? or what? they were up to and how they are to actually move the plot along. Had they cut out the multiple reality hopping and stealing there would have...more

This was the worst book of the series. Charlie is in some kind of spell. So the biggest plus of the story I gone. No jokes between Charlie and Jace in this one. Skipped 30% A lot of lines had nothing to do with the story. If Jace has nothing important to say, maybe she just has to shut up! Check out the review of the whole series on paranormal cravings!

Still utterly insane, but a helluva lot of fun. There's something very compulsive about Jace's adventures - I'm not sure if it's the humour or the characters or the unpredictable plot direction, most likely a heady combination of all three. The series hasn't quite reached 5-star gold for me yet, but I have high hopes that books 4 and 5 will continue (and surpass) the fun already had so far.

This series gets better with each novel. I read the second and third in two days and now have to wait FOREVER (Oct.) for the next!
What's not to like here? Multi-dimensional travel and kidnapping, comic books as a form of magic, Golems, Vamps and Weres of all kinds, not to mention serial killers and a touch of Cthulhu.
Wonderful!
Meghan Doidge
Too many characters to care about anyone as much as I would have liked, and I found the "stories" and alternate universe ideas almost too much information. Still the writing is solid, I laughed in places and I really like the lead character - she makes strong moral choices and just tries to do her best no matter what is thrown her way.
