Generally considered the weakest in the series, I have read reviews that describe Dark Angel as boring and rather pedestrian. But while there is certainly a healthy dose of teen cliches to be found here, from the popular "mean girls" to the loyal but geeky "true friend," Smith does fairly well with a worn formula, communicating Gillian's sense of loneliness, and her desperate longing to belong: "There's got to be someplace I belong, something I'm meant to do that's different. Because I don't fit in this world, in this life. And if there isn't something more, I'd rather be dead." I imagine that Gillian's feelings will resonate with many teens, just as the fantasy of suddenly becoming popular will seem very familiar to them.

The real weakness of Dark Angel is not the teen melodrama, which any reasonable reader would expect from a series devoted to the idea of forbidden supernatural love as a pathway to redemption and healing. No, the chief trouble with this entry in the series is that it feels disconnected from the other books, and one sees very little of the Night World itself. There is one cameo appearance by Ash Redfern (of Secret Vampire and Daughters of Darkness), as well as some brief interaction with a young witch named Melusine. But other than that, this could be a free-standing novel, which is something of a disappointment given the care that Smith has taken to build up her world in the first three books.(less)

It's a good thing, too, because while the previous books have all dealt with people who are very much in the centre of the Night World society, Dark Angel deals with Gillian, a rather shy and reserved girl who only discovers that she's part of a lost witch family thanks to a guardian spirit she calls Angel. The book brushes the edges of the Night World, for the most part, never really taking the plunge, and it makes for interesting reading, and a surprise departure from what I came to expect from the novels.

Gillian meets Angel during her near-death experience, and when he returns with her to the world of the living, he does assume the role of a guardian to her, helping her to improve her life by gaining popularity and the guy she's had a crush on for years. She learns that popularity has its downsides, however, and in trying to quash somebody's revenge scheme, she learns from Angel that she is actually a witch and can cast spells, thus leading her to curse the perpetrators of said revenge fantasy. Blindly following Angel's instructions, though, the curse was out of proportion to the crime, and was the first hint that Angel might not be as divine as she thinks.

Smith does a very good job of showing the balance behind things, and not falling prey to stereotyping, something I see a lot of when it comes to dealing with the so-called "popular crowd" in YA novels. It's a little cheesy, I admit, but Gillian learns that being popular will not solve all of her problems, but it's not done in a way that feels over the top. Some people in the popular crowd are there because people fear them too much to show how much they're not liked. Others turn out to be quite nice people, with problems of their own. Many YA novels I've read have the portrayal of popular people as beautiful teens who are nearly always mean under a thin glaze of niceness, with maybe one or two genuinely nice people in the whole bunch, who inevitably become the main character's close and true friends. There's more variety shown here, with more instances of people being people, truly varied creatures with more depth than many authors give teens credit for.

The romance was also quite interesting. Angel insists he's Gillian's soulmate, and will do just about anything to help her. Gillian is more interested in David, and takes Angel's advice on how to attract his attention. Gillian even thinks to herself at one point that there's no denying she loves both David and Angel, each somewhat differently but no less deeply than the other, which is wonderful to see in teenage fiction, especially in a story in which One True Love actually exists.

If it had any great failing, it was that it did nothing to really further the overarching plot of the entire Night World series. It revealed precious little that the previous three novels hadn't told us, and what it did reveal it did so in passing, and then right at the end. It seemed to have little place in the continuum of the larger story, and much like Daughters of Darkness, it could have been skipped without any great loss to the reader.

Though it wasn't the greatest book in the series, it definitely did have its good points, and I was pleased to see some real depth to the character, especially when you consider just how short the book is. But as I said previously, it can be skipped without much worry if what you want is to see how the series progresses. "Take it or leave it" is my final verdict, unless you're a completionist and can't bear to skip a book in a series.(less)

Je dois dire que certaines révélations m’ont même étonnée. Peut-être est-ce parce que c’est le premier tome de cette série que je lis, du coup je ne connais pas encore le schéma des livres, mais je pense que c’est surtout parce que je ne cherchais pas à anticiper l’action. Il ne faut tout de même pas oublier qu’il s’agit d’une lecture jeunesse, si vous recherchez une intrigue très poussée et complexe, passez votre chemin. Ce livre est plus un roman de détente, une lecture légère.

Il est très appréciable que chaque tome de cette série soit indépendant des autres. On peut les lire dans l’ordre ou pas, mais surtout on ne s’enferre pas dans une saga infinie dont on veut le fin mot de l’histoire sans jamais le voir arriver ! Je pense qu’il est agréable de pouvoir arrêter quand on veut, sans se dire qu’on ne saura jamais la fin …

Les personnages sont attachants, surtout Angel, que j’ai beaucoup apprécié – même s’il semble devenir un peu fou à la fin. Comme beaucoup, j’ai trouvé que Gillian est un peu écervelée, se fiant à quelqu’un ou plutôt à quelque chose qu’elle ne connait pas, et dont elle n’imaginait même pas l’existence quelques heures plus tôt. Il est vrai que les personnages ne sont pas non plus très creusés, mais je pense que ça n’ajouterait rien à l’histoire, si ce n’est un peu de lourdeur. Ils ont tous un passé exploité et un caractère bien défini. C’est suffisant à mon sens, surtout pour des personnages qu’on ne retrouve pas sur plusieurs tomes.

Il est regrettable qu’au tome 4, le Night World ne soit toujours pas réellement défini. On comprend superficiellement de quoi il s’agit, mais ce n’est pas clairement dit. J’imagine que ce doit être frustrant pour les personnes qui ont lu les quatre tomes de la série. Mais moi ça ne m’a pas gênée puisque je n’en étais qu’à mon premier tome.

L’auteur aborde au travers de ce livre un gros problème de société : la popularité au collège/lycée. Popularité qui peut pousser certains à devenir une toute autre personne pour rentrer dans le moule et se faire accepter ou bien à commettre les pires actes pour garder sa place. L.J. Smith s’efforce de montrer que la popularité n’apporte pas que du bonheur, au contraire. J’espère que cela mettra du plomb dans la tête des jeunes qui liront ce tome, et qu’ils comprendront le message.

En conclusion, c’est une lecture agréable, sans prétention. L’histoire est bien menée, et nous offre même quelques rebondissements. La plume est simple ce qui rend la lecture rapide et donne du rythme. Les personnages sont attachants même s’ils ne sont pas très recherchés, cela ne nuit pas à l’histoire … Au final c’est une bonne lecture jeunesse, divertissante et qui essaye de faire passer un message en abordant un problème de société : la popularité. Je la recommande donc à tous.(less)

Déjà le quatrième tome de la série Night World. Après trois tomes, je savais à quoi m'attendre de cette série. Je ne suis pas fan à 100%, mais c'est léger et facile à lire. Le style de L. J. Smith n'est pas celui qui me convient le mieux, mais j'y trouve mon compte quand même. Et c'est le cas pour ce tome encore une fois.
Un jour, en rentrant du lycée, Gillian entend des cris qui proviennent de la forêt. Sans trop réfléchir, elle se lance à la recherche qu'un enfant qui pourrait peut-être avoir besoin de son aide. Mais malheureusement pour elle, Gillian perd pied et tombe tête première dans une rivière dont l'eau est glacée en ce mois de décembre. C'est ainsi que Gillian meurt: sans ami, sans famille et sans petit ami. C'est à cet instant que Gillian fait la rencontre d'Angel, un ange qui lui donnera une seconde chance dans la vie. Et en plus de lui avoir sauvé la vie, il devient son ange gardien. Gillian est heureuse maintenant qu'elle a quelqu'un à qui parler et qui puisse la conseiller pour qu'elle puisse reprendre sa vie en main. En à peine quelques jours, Gillian est la reine du lycée. Mais la popularité n'a pas que des bons côtés. Pour lui éviter des problèmes, Angel commence à lui demander des choses de plus en plus bizarres. Mais est-elle vraiment prête à faire tout ce qu'il lui demande?
Après avoir terminé la lecture du tome trois, j'avais un peu perdu mon intérêt pour cette série. Je n'avais pas vraiment accroché et je me demandais un peu si je devais continuer de lire ces livres. Mais en lisant le résumé de ce tome, j'y ai repris goût très rapidement. Des anges! C'est sans aucun doute une de mes créatures favorites lorsqu'il s'agit de romans fantastiques.
Je me suis cependant vite rendu compte que, malheureusement, le résumé qui m'avait tant plu au départ nous dévoile au moins les 3/4 du livre. Et pire encore, non seulement il nous dévoile les 3/4 du livre, mais il nous révèle presque tout ce qui est intéressant dans l'histoire. Lorsque je lisais, j'avais l'impression de lire une version un peu plus longue du résumé. Je me demandais quand viendrait le moment où je verrais quelque chose de nouveau. Bien trop loin dans l'histoire, j'en ai bien peur.
Une chose qui m'avait séduite dans le concept de cette série, ce sont les âmes soeurs. En effet, dans chaque tome, on suit l'histoire de deux âmes soeurs, toujours un humain et un faisant partie du Night World. L'amour interdit à souvent un petit quelque chose de mystérieux qui nous pousse à lire un livre. Dans les deux premiers tomes, c'était effectivement le cas. Malheureusement, ce n'est pas le cas des tomes trois et quatre. L'aspect des âmes soeurs est toujours présent, mais tellement mal exploité... Je n'y trouve plus rien d'intéressant. J'aime bien qu'on en apprenne un peu plus sur le Night World, mais pas lorsque c'est au détriment d'un autre aspect du roman. C'est exactement ce qui se passe ici. On dirait que L. J. Smith avait un certain nombre de pages à respecter pour chaque histoire, ce qui ne lui donne pas la possibilité d'approfondir chaque aspect de son roman. C'est un ou l'autre, jamais les deux.
Pour ce qui est des personnages, je ne peux pas dire que je les ai détesté, mais je ne peux pas vraiment dire non plus que je me suis vraiment attachée à eux. Prenons Gillian par exemple. Elle est fade, sans vie. Elle se laisse mener par le bout du nez par Angel en accomplissant ses quatre volontés. S'il n'était pas là, je me demande bien ce qu'elle deviendrait. Parlons-en d'Angel pendant que j'y pense. C'est supposé être le méchant de l'histoire, celui qui fait peur et qui pourrait mettre en danger la vie du personnage principal, en l'occurrence Gillian. Mais il n'a même pas réussi à me faire frissonner. Et David. On en parle à peine alors que l'histoire devrait vraiment être centrée sur lui et Gillian. On peut donc voir que le concept des âmes soeurs est vraiment laissé de côté.
Décidément, une histoire qui s'annonçait pour être très intéressante et pour laquelle j'ai fini par perdre tout intérêt. Une chance que je l'ai lu en une journée. Je lui ai tout de même mis une notre de 3/5 parce que l'histoire me plaît bien, mais qu'encore une fois, elle manque de profondeur.

ce livre est mon tout premier Night World et surement pas le dernier! Je commence à bien aimer L.J Smith! Même si elle ne figurera pas non plus dans mon panthéon. Elle a de très bonnes idées et sait nous tenir en haleine, mais elle sa plume n’est pas exceptionnel. J’avais déjà pus le remarquer dans les deux premiers tomes du Journal d’un vampire. Les seuls autres livres que j’ai pus lire de l’auteur. D’accord c’est de la littérature pour adolescent, mais bon…

A cause de cela ça peut risque de ne pas plaire aux personnes plus âgées ou aux ados ayant lus des romans mieux écrits. Je prends l’exemple de la série Hunger games, qui est pourtant destinés aux adolescents mais a aussi conquis toutes les autres tranches d’âges.
Heureusement, l’auteure nous narre de bonnes histoires qui nous font toujours passer un bon moment, mais qu’on oublis le lendemain.
Mais ses romans font de très bons matériaux pour crées des séries pour adolescents! The vampire diaries est une série bien meilleur que les livres! D’ailleurs Le cercle secret sera bientôt adapté à la télévision.

Je reviens au roman maintenant! Le style simple de l’auteure, qui ne s’ennuie pas à faire de longues descriptions (le plus souvent inutiles dans certains livres) nous plonge directement dans l’intrigue et on se prend à tourner les pages pour savoir la suite. L’histoire ne révolutionne rien mais nous tient tout de même en suspense.
Gillian par contre mérite de se prendre la torgnole du siècle! Voici ce que je pensais pendant la moitié du roman «Mais t’es vraiment c…. ma pauvre fille!» C’est l’exemple typique des héroïnes gentilles, naïfs,stupides qu’on nous ressorts depuis des lustres dans les romans pour adolescents! L.J Smith à du instaurer le genre (presque sont sortis il y a une dizaine d’années), autrement c’est pas possible que d’autre auteurs aient décidés de crée leurs héroïnes sur le même modèle!

L’univers est quand à lui assez riche et m’a donné envi de lire les autres tomes pour en apprendre plus sur le Night World.
Et la conclusion…je me demandais comment Gillian allait s’en sortir et là (je ne vais pas trop spoiler) Quelqu’un nous sort une phrase qui règle tout!(je devais faire cette gueule là O_____o)
Pour ma part, qu’il dise un truc pareil est inimaginable et montre que l’auteure ne savait vraiment pas comment conclure l’intrigue et a donc choisit la facilité!

Pour finir, j’ai apprécié ce roman qui m’a tenu en haleine mais qui retombe souvent à plat à cause des facilités qu’a prise l’auteure.
Mais je m’achèterais surement les autres tomes de la séries et d’autres livres de l’auteur.(less)

My favorite so far! I love these books; they satiate my paranormal addiction with real believable characters. They have enough mystery, and excitement that I cannot put them down. There is enough romance to make them fun without being uncomfortable. I would have no problem letting my teen read these sweet stories. I have been able to find a message in most of them of becoming a better person in some way with a good ending. Can't wait to read the next one.

Ok, I am really glad I came back to this series.

The second and third books were ok. Bearable. But this book was GREAT. Intense and imaginative. I didn't really care for the main character's love interest but the rest of the story was really fantastic. And well written as always. Would recommend!!

I was actually a little hesitant about reading this book, since it wasn't about vampires or any other subject that I knew much about or was interested in. But being a completionist I decided to read it anyway, and I liked it very much.

I think this may still be my favorite of the Night World books.

On this reread I realized it's--along with everything else--a "bad boy can be good for a girl" sort of story--only with the notion that that only works if you eventually move on.

(I think I may have to start a "good boys in YA fiction" list one of these days.)

Great story but the romance or lack of, disappointed me. Then I was a bit freaked out that Gillain cousin tries to convince her that he is her soul mates. Ewww!!!

Gillian was a girl who wanted to belong someone, who felt that she was born for more, I think at some point most of us feel that way. Or at least some of us do.

it was about Gillian finding her place in the world, in the Night World. Ash Redfern is in this book for about 10 seconds, it depends on how fast you read..... *sight* Ash*sight*

The book was okay, still good, and Gillian's soulmate turned out to be okay.
