Moomin, Vol. 1 (Moomins Comic Strip #1)
by
Tove Jansson
Moomin Book One is the first volume of Drawn & Quarterly’s publishing plan to reprint the entire strip drawn by Jansson before she handed over the reins to her brother Lars in 1960. This is the first time the strip will be published in any form in North America and will deservedly place Jansson among the international cartooning greats of the last century.

This book, and the other collection of comic strips and the novels, are a real treat. They're about a good-naturedly anarchic family of hippo-like trolls who let all kinds of different creatures come live in their house and who get involved in one strange adventure after another. The family actually reminds me a little of the family in Frank Capra's movie You Can't Take it With You; an anything goes type of household where creativity is given precedence and free reign.

Having been a fan of Tove Jansson's winsome Moomin books for many years, I was happy and excited to learn that for a few years in the 1950s, the Finnish author published a Moomin comic strip (oddly, in a British newspaper), now collected for the first time in this handsome volume, the first of five. What an unexpected treasure-trove. Yet despite being absolutely delighted to receive this for my birthday when it first came out, I was resistant to actually reading it. This was because I immediatel...more
I used to watch the Moomins a lot as a child, and have very fond memories of the TV show. I only realised about a year or so ago that the Moomins were originally found in books and comic stripes written and illustrated by Tove Jansson. My boyfriend gave me this book as an anniversary gift last year, and now seemed the time to read something cute and childish.

I had the second volume of the mooning comics for years and never actually got round to reading it. Having recently encountered a renewal in my love for the Tove Jansson's moomin family, I thought if I was to read them properly I need to start with the first volume. The first round of stories in volume one were an absolute treat and I can't believe I have kept them away from myself for so long! Tove Jansson's wonderful drawings keep you entertained and the little captions and speech bubbles are...more
Tove Jansson’s Moomin books are absurd comic delights that border on the edge of surreal, melancholy, and the fantastical. Whether an adult who missed these, or as gift for a child, these rank with the Roald Dahl and Dr. Seuss books but avoid the misanthropy of the former and the occasional frivolity of the latter. A weird wonderland of laugh out loud humor.
It took me a while to shift my mind into Moomin world. I was introduced Jansson through her adult fiction, and so it was somewhat strange to see that same mind working through the format of a comic strip. It took me mid-way through the second Moomin story to become more open to the world of Moomin Valley and to gain an appreciation of Moomin and his family and friends. The stories are heartwarmingly absurd, and embellished with wholesomely artsy and somewhat bohemian morals that make me want to...more
The artwork was cute, but Moomin himself was kindof a sad character. He has a girlfriend but really relies on his parents. His dad is more interested in being an adventurer and his mom agrees with everything his dad says. His girlfriend loves jewelry and even dated another guy shortly. Moomin is like... if you mixed Ross from the tv show "Friends" with... maybe with Nigel from "Frasier" (not the smart part)... and a handful of mamas boys, that would be Moomin.

A gift, celebrating enjoyment of Moomin stories.
-Sniff! Father and Mother have been lost in the spring cleaning!
- There you are, NEVER tidy up.
- I expect they have just gone off for a while.
- But WHY?
-Oh just fun. Have you never wanted to run away from home? Even parents need a change sometimes...
- Snufkin, you know the world. What does one do when one's parents have run away
-Nothing.
- But I must do SOMETHING about it!
- Come and have a swim with me.
-- Do you think they have been drowned?
- No,...more

I don't think I have any terribly specific thoughts on the Moomin comic strips. I love them, they fill me with warm fuzzies and make me laugh, and they're awfully cute. Although there's a lot of wry commentary on human nature, I think -- the silly things they do to impress or annoy each other.
And, anyway, the Moomin comics are just perfect for sickbed reading. Just... don't take the copies out of my local library when I return them, they're probably covered in my germs...

I am in love with Jansson's characters. Her style is sort of Pogo by way of Mary Blair, only she predates both. So cute! And the blend of absurdity and earnestness is ever so endearing. At first blush the strips felt stilted, but then that transformed into charm. The first three chapters are perfection. Chapter 4, though, was just awkward. Aside from a random talking helicopter with the face of an Angry Bird, this concluding story arc just didn't click.
It was cute in the traditional moomin style. It's more of a collection of short stories told through comic strips than an actual graphic novel though. Don't go in expecting one story that stretches from page 1 to the end. It is fun for what it is, and enjoyable for moomin fans. If you're new to moomins I'd suggest starting with the kids chapter books honestly. They're really fun (even for grownups).

I love the surrealism of the Moomins. In the first strips in this book, Moomin is trying to get rid of his house guests, including a deluge of "poor relations," tiny wiggling creatures who show up with their tiny suitcases and demand cocktails. (He provides these, then builds them many tiny beds.) Another unwanted guest eats the timbers of Moomin's house.
Big-bottomed hippo-trolls, they make the rockin' world go round. I must admit that I gave this book as a gift (to the esteemed Eric) after pretty much just flipping through it and reading the first story.... but I'm sure, of all people, he'll excuse me for judging a book by its cover. "Moomin on the Riviera" is my favorite story in this collection, I think, mostly because of how it uses that age-old quandary: why does an artist bother to put a bathing suit on a normally-naked cartoon character?...more
I have actually never read the Moomin strips, unless you count flipping though a comic that I couldn't read, though I have read the books.
These strips are cool, funny, and cute. I liked the trip to the Rivera.
