The main reasons why I adore the Night Huntress novels:

1. Bones.
2. Cat.
3. The romance between the two.
4. Amusing and awesome side characters (Vlad!).
5. Lots of awww-worthy scenes.
6. An utterly engaging plot.

Of those six reasons, only one of them is found in One Grave at a Time in abundance, and that is Cat. There is not nearly enough Bones, none of Vlad, almost no cute and heart-stopping fights/playful bantering betwe...more

The Night Huntress series is a big guilty pleasure of mine. I love the characters, the dialogue and each new challenge presented to Cat and Bones in every book. They are not deep stories and there is quite a large emphasis on romance and sex, rather than mysteries, but they're pleasurable and addictive... like chocolate. And they're also better than a great deal of the paranormal genre because Jeaniene Frost writes fantastic characters and banter between them.

Being an avid reader of the first 5 books, it's evident that the series is sadly beginning to lose momentum. It seemed like the author was clutching at straws with the plot to create a completely out-of-the-blue arch enemy that you somehow fail to care about.

What I have loved in all of the previous books, even when Cat and Bones were fighting, was the strong emotions causing through the main character, the fast-paced action, the great side-characters, the witty remarks, and of course the passion...more Being an avid reader of the first 5 books, it's evident that the series is sadly beginning to lose momentum. It seemed like the author was clutching at straws with the plot to create a completely out-of-the-blue arch enemy that you somehow fail to care about.

What I have loved in all of the previous books, even when Cat and Bones were fighting, was the strong emotions causing through the main character, the fast-paced action, the great side-characters, the witty remarks, and of course the passion and bond between our favourite vampire couple. It seemed that One Grave at a Time lacked the essential elements that tied the series together, and I just felt like it was a complete stand alone that had bland characters barely reminiscent of the ones from the series.

Firstly, the book was incredibly slow and the whole thing revolves around an evil poltergeist called Kramer. When you weren't reading about his terrifying threats and hauntings, you were reading about an annoying ass of a Centre leader Madigan. So what I felt here was a constant annoyance at whatever character that Frost has felt compelled to include that just gristled at me. Honestly, the previous books had done without the characters just there to make you annoyed and there is absolutely no reason that this one needed to include TWO of these characters.

Secondly, because the entire plot was so focused on this Kramer poltergeist that Cat is so fixated on, it barely left time for anything else. Very limited interaction between other characters actually felt like they were there as a cardboard cut out. Cat and Bones spent most of their time fixated on Kramer. And where the heck was Vlad? Definitely a slight disappointment.

Also the whole Cat and Mouse plot has been done so many times before and I don't mind it when it's done well, but when the finale is so anti-climactic you wish you could have done other things, like read all 5 previous books again. During the showdown, I actually felt all of those unpleasant emotions that I had from reading A Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, disturbing, wrong and just plain unpleasant.

All in all it's evident that I'm quite disappointed in this book, and hope that the last few books of the series will live up to the excellent standard that Frost has created for the first 5 books.

All the darkness lately made it easy to forget the world contained more than people trying to hurt other people. It had beauty, too, if you knew where to look - and remembered to open your eyes.

What a perfect installment to the Night Huntress series! One Grave at a Time was nothing short of full on adrenaline and actioin. This series is on fire and the flames are just as strong as they were at the beginning of this series.

Cat and Bones

Love, love, love my Cat and Bones. I don't care if this book (and it seems the series) has lost the "heat" the first couple of books had. I was very happy to see that Cat had learned her lesson about going off without Bones. I loved to see how they are together as a strong unit, finally. Bones keeps adding powers as we go along. Awesome book!! I was so excited when this finally came out- and I definitely wasn't disappointed!

I think one of the main reasons this didn't reach 5 stars was because it felt like a novella that had been stretched as much as possible to try and reach a full length novel. There seemed to be tracts of time where not much seemed to be happening and so it lost its pacing and paired with a rather abrupt ending it left me feeling a bit "oh, is that it?" I kept expecting there to be more. But JF does seem to be building up another more complex story line involving Tate and the team, which I am hoping she will pick up again in the next book.

Mencheres and Vlad also weren't present in this book and as much as I love those two characters I didn't mind, this is a Night Huntress book so as long as Cat and Bones were in it I was happy. However, we did have Spade, Denise and Ian in this, so we saw a different set of secondary characters. I have to say I am looking forward to Ian's book I love his character he his so funny watching him wind up Cat and Justina were some of my favourite bits in the book.

Now, finally, Cat and Bones, they are a solid couple now so all the drama that we saw in the first books in this series has gone, so instead of this we get to see the deepening of their relationship instead, which although I did enjoy and was all "aww" about it, it isn't as exciting as when they first got together and you didn't know if they would stay together and Cat would over come her prejudice etc. But I still liked seeing them, I kind of feel that the series should come to end soon now that we knoe Cat and Bones are good, as much as I hate seeing a series I love end, I would rather it didn't do a Sookie Stakehouse and keep going till no one care anymore, leave us wanting more!(less)

I am a huge Cat and Bones fan. My first paranormal romance book was book 1, Halfway to the Grave, and I have read that one multiple times already. A big draw to the series for me is the sizzling attraction and chemistry between Cat and Bones. I love that they are so loyal to each other, and through the books their relationship grows and strengthens. Throw in the vampire drama, the danger, the fighting, the flying, the books are all amazing and so much fun to read. In book 5, ghosts begin to play a more prominent role in the supernatural community, and in One Grave At A Time, the story revolves around ghosts. Cat and Bones seek and fight a new enemy, a deadly ghostly serial killer, but their usual skills are of no use to them in this installment in the Night Huntress series.

The beginning of this story was a bit slow, there was not a lot of action to begin with. Cat and Bones learn about the serial killer ghost and decide to seek him out and try to figure out how to kill a specter. Along the way, they pick up a new ghost (Fabian's lady friend) and a medium. There are plenty of humorous moments and thoughts, and Cat and Bones are still as territorial as ever. When the real ghost hunting gets going, Spade Denise, Ian, and even Cat's mom join the group. The new leader of the "homeland security" squad is a tool and for some reason hates Cat. There is quite a bit going on, making for engaging reading.

However, this book was definitely not my favorite in the series. While Cat and Bones finally seem to be working well together and they have many of their problems worked out, this book was missing the sizzle between them. There was only 1 sex scene, which for Cat and Bones is sadly not much. There were other times that were promising, but they would be interrupted, and I was let down. Throughout the whole book, that blazing chemistry between them was just missing. Don't get me wrong, they don't have to be into sex all the time, but Cat and Bones are inherently sexual characters, and usually all their interactions are interlaced with an edgy, sensual attraction. In this book, they felt more comfortable than hot, and I missed that heat.

As for the fighting, since they were dealing with a ghost, I felt like most of the fighting was actually running. It was defensive, not so much offensive. The characters are at their best when they charge into situations fully in control and dangerous, so I missed that too. I guess that I felt as though Cat and Bones were not on top of their game in One Grave At A Time, but the book was still a very good read. I love this series, I love all the characters, and I am definitely looking forward to more Cat and Bones. (less)

I didn't like it. I didn't hate it. I did expect more. Part of the allure of this series is the great cast of characters: Cat and Bones and their amazing secondary characters - Ian, Spade, Mencheres, Marie, and Justine. This book fell flat for me. Once again, I found myself with the dreaded book ADHD. I constantly put down the book and did other stuff. I never did that with the earlier books.

Here's the thing - Cat and Bones have lost their sizzle. Yes, Bones is still hot and he has rippling musc...more I didn't like it. I didn't hate it. I did expect more. Here's the thing - Cat and Bones have lost their sizzle. Yes, Bones is still hot and he has rippling muscles, yada yada. Bones is oh, so sexy. But the heat of the first 4 books is lost and nowhere to be found. Yes, there was a sexy chapter, but nothing like the infamous chapter 32 of book 2.

The secondary characters have always added a lot to this series. Sadly, Vlad and Mencheres were missing in action. Marie, the ghoul queen, was mentioned many times but did not even merit a cameo appearance. Cat's mom Justine, the woman we all loved to hate seemed to have been neutered. And to make her a vegetarian vampire? What's up with that? Of all the people who have been made into vampires, I imagined Justine as a bloodthirsty, scary vampire. Instead, she was trying to get sustenance from meat packages at grocery stores. Ick! Spade was boring. Denise was a welcome surprise, too bad her role could not have been expanded.

I think that Ian and Tyler saved the book with their well-timed lines.

I did find the book a little repetitive at first. There seemed to be a lot of recapping of events. I also found that the secondary story line revolving around Madigan and Don did not seem to fit, or maybe I just didn't care about it.

Big Bad or Heinrich Kramer was repulsive. I found that he just annoyed me and got on my nerves towards the end.

Not sure if I can recommend this book to anyone. If you are a die-hard fan, I'm sure you'll enjoy this book. Otherwise, it's best to stop at book 4.

What was my main issue with this book you may ask? Bones is too perfect. He is so perfect in fact, he is beginning to sparkle. Yes ladies, I said it. Blasphemy it may be, but read this excerpt and tell me you don't see it.

"I stared at my husband's profile noting how his sculpted cheekbones, curving dark brows, and exquisite crystal skin only highlighted the ruthlessness of his expression.

Ok, so we all know that Bones is gorgeous and ruthless and blah, blah, blah. There are about 20 occurrences of these types of lines throughout the book. It's getting little ridiculous. We get already! Bones has no flaws, is absolutely perfect in every way and is so hot you could cook breakfast on his abbs. Now that we have that covered, can we get to some actual important plot in the next book please?

The one good thing this book does is introduce a new character. Tyler the flamboyant medium is amazingly hilarious. He has the best lines in the book hands down. Without him, this would have been a complete waste of time for me.

It is becoming increasingly apparent to me that this series is starting to take a nose dive. It started out amazing at first, but after book three, things got a little dicey.This is not quiet the weakest book in the series as it is still entertaining, however it is completely lacking in that original Cat and Bones magic that we all love so much. Is it because now that they are finally together, things have settled down with their relationship? I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but something is definitely missing. In my honest opinion, it is about time Ms. Frost puts Cat and Bones' series to rest and focuses her energies on the Night Huntress World books and Vlad's new series that begins with Once Burned. I think we could all use some fresher blood. (less)

"Before we met, I'd fly for hours to clear my head," Bones said, his voice reaching me even over the rush of wind. "It was the closest I came to finding peace, but though several of my mates could fly, I always went alone. I never wanted to share this with anyone until you."

I just love the relationships in the Night Huntress Series so much. I think each and every character in this series has brought a smile upon my face one time or another. Even though there is not that much Cat and Bones sexy time, we still get a few tender moments between them that I loved. Also my heart broke for Spade and Denise for what they endured which makes me love their relationship even more and Ian? Oh, sweet sex-fulfilled Ian.

"You're shagging a woman who can turn into a dragon? Blast you, Charles, I am sick with envy!"
Not now." Spade muttered.

We have more Ian this time around and I have to tell you I love him. Every time he opened his mouth I couldn't help but put this huge wicked grin on my face. He. is. HILARIOUS. I also have a new favorite character that is somewhat hot for all of our favorite master vamps. You will love this character that brings more humor and giggles to the book.

Was this my favorite Night Huntress book? No, but I loved it just as much as the other books. Pick up this book Night Huntress fans, you will love ONE GRAVE AT A TIME and if you haven't picked them up yet then what the hell are you waiting for?

As if that wouldn't be enough of a challenge, the new leader of Cat's old covert group is impossible, antagonistic, and has a hidden agenda that seems to have Cat at its center.

Where the last book was kind of a walkabout for Cat and Bones with a quick and easy disposal of the evil villain, I really enjoyed seeing Cat put through the paces as she races against time to save three innocent women from torture and a gruesome death by fire. There's also a lot more action than last time, because this villain doesn't stay hidden in the background. Instead, the poltergeist villain - who is a nasty piece of work - keeps popping up to wreck destruction on Cat and friends and the witch hunter is unwittingly aided by the frustratingly annoying leader of the government team bulldozing onto the scene at absolutely the worst moments. With the whole mess building up to a pretty epic battle and adding in some personal time for Cat and Bones - which literally takes their relationship to new heights - One Grave at a Time ended up being a more than respectable addition to the series.

I did have a few nits with One Grave at a Time, as a warning, some of my nits are likely due to the fact that I read it immediately after finishing This Side of the Grave, so that fact that I felt like the book started off slow is likely only the result of having everything from the previous book fresh in my mind. Those readers returning to Cat's world after a few months, will probably appreciate the chance to come back up to speed before trouble comes knocking on Cat's door and she finds herself embroiled in battles on two fronts - spirit and human. And actually my other nits, now that I think about them, aren't really problems with the story here. They fall more in the category of worries about how the series will hold up in the future with Cat and Bones settled into lovely lusty undead domesticity, unless there are some good external conflicts to keep them from getting stale.

That said, I am really curious about where the series goes from here, it may be that the turmoil inducing reboot of Cat's old team will provide that needed conflict, and I am really looking forward to the upcoming Vlad spinoff - he was absent here and I am pretty excited about seeing more of him after the previous book.(less)

Cat and Bones still got it!! They are perfect together. While I was a little sad at the lack of sex in this book the rest of the story was still awesome.

We know when we read a Night Huntress book we are going into some crazy situation where Cat and Bones will kick some ass and save the day. Hmmm, this one is stuck right in the middle of three and four stars and neither fit! All the things we love about this series are present - just not a whole novels worth.

I love Cat and Bones and, unlike others, I love their relationship in this book. Full of danger and desire, One Grave at a Time is another must-read from author Jeaniene Frost. Cat and Bones’ relationship has grown and matured yet is still kept fresh and fantastic, with the perfectly sizzling chemistry that we first found in Halfway to the Grave still in abundance. Though there is a notable lack of emotional tension and the sexual escapades that Frost has become known for, she makes it up with utterly romantic scenes of the couple reminiscing on the past that will literally leave you breathless by the end.

Swift moving and action packed, One Grave at a Time focuses more on the urban fantasy side then paranormal romance this time around. Most of the gang is back with Ian, Spade, Denise, Fabien and a few new friends kicking ass alongside Cat and Bones; repelling ghosts, erecting traps and hunting down this vile enemy and the victims he terrorizes. Always one for sarcastic and humorous dialogue, Frost does not disappoint but with Ian we know this is a given! However a new, somewhat flamboyant, character Tyler who is a medium also added some laugh out loud moments and is sure to be a new fan favorite.

There is a mysterious sub-plot of a suspicious new guy, Jason Madigan, who storms the compound and Cat’s prior team, claiming Don’s position. Madigan seems to know a lot more then what he’s leading on and we will definitely be seeing more of him in the future. And not just for the fact that he has an uncanny ability for showing up at the worst possible times, unknowingly aiding Cat’s opponent!

One Grave at a Time is not the usual heart twisting; emotional rollercoaster we have come to expect with the Night Huntress series, which was somewhat disappointing, but this book is none the less sexy, gripping and purely addictive!

It is also perfectly set up to work as a standalone. I recommend reading the series from the start since it is one of the best series out there but if you want to read a new release before committing to the whole series then One Grave at a Time would be perfect for it.

oh good! it was better than the last one. i actually understood what was going on! ....i think i have a problem with ghosts. i just don't find them that interesting. two books revolving around ghosts is enough for me, i really hope the next one is different. especially in the Bones and Vlad department. and yeah, throw in some more Ian too.
And this book really made me want an Ian book. come on Frost! Give me some Ian! (view spoiler)...more

Cat and Bones relationship is a sexy unbreakable bond. The forces of ghosts try to break them, torture and kill. Love and belief in each other always works for them. Too bad they aren't the only ones involved, snoopy government jerks, crazy dead folks and screaming women interfere . Not as intense as previous books in the series for me. A nice easy continuation of the series.

Oh what do I say about the genius that is jeanine frost? I've loved the night huntress since the first time I opened the first one and within 24 hours I consumed 3 books hungry for more I turned to my supplier( my sister) and she gave the next ones, Cat is one of my favourite characters of all time, her wit, her charm, her potty mouth, this instalment does not disappoint, it has everything you expect from a night huntress book, the wit, the banter, Bones, the hots , oh yeah and the story not bad...more

I enjoyed the latest Cat and Bones installment, although this was an ARC and it definitely still had a few errors. I'm enjoying the maturing of their relationship, and glad that all the angst is done, so they can concentrate on fighting the bad guys!
