Hey, I didn’t post this early today; I am a bit whooped on from a busy weekend. My youngest daughter had her birthday this weekend, we had a houseful Friday night, and then last night we were partying with Big Daddy Abel, author of the Open Mic series, and the Amish Outlaws at the Parx Casino in Bensalem, Pa. My youngest daughter had her birthday this weekend, we had a houseful Friday night, and then last night we were partying with Big Daddy Abel, author of the Open Mic series, and the Amish Outlaws at the Parx Casino in Bensalem, Pa. The houseful of people and the birthday celebration were nice; I love having the family around. The concert was intense and jam packed as they turned people away at the venue. Do the words gyrating sardines mean anything to you. Fun, though my bottom hasn’t been massaged that much in my lifetime as people kept grabbing it to get by me to get to the bar or use the facilities. But I digress: let’s discuss the novel at hand shall we. To what is between the covers:

Werewolves are something new for me as I have been grooving on the vampire thing for a bit now. Romance is cool and fun, so when you combine them together you have a nice paranormal /romance story here. Here is the deal on the novel: it is a debut by Joy Spraycar. I like the feel and grit of what she has here. If you have read any of my posts or heard me on The G-ZONE, my blogtalk show, you know I am a big supporter of self-published work for many reasons and they hold true today. Her narrative and unique voice resonate throughout the novel from the front of it to the back. I enjoy the rawness of the writing, the truly honest feel to the work, and the way she blazes a path with her characters: Different, fun, romantic, unrelenting, this is the real deal and worth the time and effort of the read. Don’t pass this up, explore your wild side and go run with the pack instead of the coven this time.

This story starts in the 1800s when Quinton first becomes a werewolf. It also tells the tale of how he first meets Serenity and loses her. They meet again in the present and fall back in love. Things escalate and they find themselves needing to destroy Quinton's father, Wesley for the sake of their future. There is also later a mention of a cure to the were virus. The key to finding it is in Serenity's ancestry.

Unique – is the word that I want to use to describe this book. I am saying that because I just can’t lump it into any one category or for any one particular type of reader. When I first started reading the book I thought about how I felt when I read Twilight. Everyone wanted me to read Twilight – I wasn’t thrilled about it but I gave it a try because of my friends. I remember reading it and thinking – “where is the story really going” but “hmmmm - intriguing”. Like Twilight, it is a simple love story, no hard core sex scenes or vulgar language. If you took out a couple pages of implied sexual violence it would be perfect for teens. It isn’t even just for women. I can see where it could appeal to men as well. For a person who throws books down, I can honestly say that I didn’t drop it once .
Quinton’s character is great. He is a 150 year old werewolf, turned by his father. His father is a tyrant and is into everything dark and evil. The werewolves in this story aren’t the kinds that are hunky and you want to date. These are the ones that nightmares were made out of. Quinton wants nothing more than to be normal and have a normal family. His love of all time, Serenity, was taken from him when his father turned him into a werewolf. He hates himself and doesn’t want to hurt anyone so with the help of the mob, he locks himself away during the full moon. Serry’s character is a little bit like an old fashion June Cleaver in modern times. She is happy and only sees the good in everything. She loves deeply and without question.
Quinton and Serry meet again by accident, when Serry’s abusive husband runs into Quinton’s car. The story grows from there, not just into a love story but also a battle of good versus evil. The love scenes are implied which makes it great for younger readers, guys and women who like the milder romance.
There are several parts in the book where the writing is a little juvenile and repetitive but most of the book flows nicely. There is a lot of suspense and the “oh no girl don’t go there” moments. It was refreshing and worth taking the time to read it. Keep in mind that it isn’t filled with hot sex scenes or horrible blood and gore -Just a really “unique and intriguing” story. I would read another of Joy’s books. Good job!(less)

One hundred and fifty years later, Serry Miller has been having dreams that are almost worse than living with her abusive husband. She's always running from a black wolf and sometimes there's a handsome man with black hair and blue eyes in her dreams. When word comes that her drunk husband caused an accident that left him in critical condition and the other driver seriously hurt, she rushes to the hospital to find that the other driver is the man from her dreams - and she has the nagging feeling that she knows him.

Quinton makes his escape from the hospital, but later comes back to watch the now widowed Serry - his Serenity reincarnated. He convinces her to begin dating him and after a couple of months, decides he must confess his secret. Serry has already guessed it though, and agrees to marry him anyway. When she finds out the only way for them to have normal children is to kill his father and lift the curse that's passed down genetically making his descendants werewolves, they agree that he has to die.

It may not be anything brand new, but this had a premise in paranormals that I like - that lovers can be reincarnated until they find each other again. Toss in some werewolves, a crazy daddy who wants to ruin their lives over and over and it sounds like a good story. Here, it was just half of the story because Quinton's father is taken care of by that point. The second half of the book was about something else entirely. Something I didn't particularly care about that didn't even feel like it wasn't written at the same time as the first half.

Each half of the book taken separately and made into its own book could have worked well for me with some tweaking. I'd have loved to have seen the first half moved to a different time (take it back several hundred years). The story ended up being full of familiars, a white witch, telepathy, premonitions of danger, kidnapping a fair maiden and an epic battle of shapeshifters with basic weapons. Instead this took place in modern England with apparently no one noticing the commotion. There was a dolphin familiar that was somewhere near the Thames! After the battle, Quinton and Serry rode a horse familiar three days back to civilization, but later in the book, the white witch took Serry back to the place by cab.

The second half was suited perfectly to modern times, but it could have stood alone without any connection to the action in England at all. Killing his father didn't end the werewolf curse, but Serry may have stumbled upon some family history that provided a cure - her past connected her to the man who took in Serenity's baby. There was some interesting alchemy to explore, Serry's biological history to dig into - there was some mystery about her father's death that was picked up and dropped almost immediately. Inside was a contemporary romance, something different from the first half of the book.

There was an effort to connect both halves with Serry's recurring nightmares and later, her dreams of a werewolf family. I didn't fully understand the point of them since nothing in them ever happened, although they provided a slightly ominous tone to the story. There were things that took up space later in the book - Quinton seemed to sleep a lot - that I wish had been devoted to developing the relationship between the original Serenity and Quinton in the beginning of the book. I'd have liked a peek at why she was his soul mate in the first place. As it was, I had no idea why Quinton and Serry even loved each other this time around. Besides a lot of cooing about it to each other and fairly non-explicit sex, they just didn't do anything on the page to show me why they were in love.

What made me wonder if these sections had been written at different times were the distinct changes I thought there were in style between the first and second halves of the book. The first was full of internal monologues, angst and improbable paranormal situations. The very short section immediately following was odd - a brief period where Quinton and Serry were extremely normal, running his P.I. business as he tracked down cheating spouses. Then the second half began and the tone was more like a romantic suspense story with the little paranormal bit. There was a huge shift from internal monologue to external dialogue and to some extent, it felt like the earlier events of the book were only brought up once in a while, as an afterthought.

My Summary: While I feel the execution may be raw, there's promise in each section of this story if taken apart, I think. I would have liked to see the first or second half alone, slowed down and with its own consistent tone with more told about Quinton and Serry, because they were good characters and the premise itself is a favorite of mine.

After Quinton's father takes his love and turns him into a werewolf the story takes off. Fast forward a bit, Quinton discovers Serry after a car accident. When Serry sees him she knows he is in fact the man she has been dreaming about. She is scared but so in love with him life outside and what he is doesn't matter.

I was rather confused by the concept of this book after reading the pitch and the blurb, but it was a werewolf book and I love werewolf books, so I gave it a try. However, even after the first few pages, the word that came to mind was "sappy." Another DNF for me folks. Let me tell you why. The story starts out as something I can really get into. I will overlook the fact that the werewolf, Quinton, has mommy issues from accidentally killing her in his wolfy form. And the fact that these issues arise several times throughout the book. A werewolf looking for his soul mate who was taken from him by his corrupt werewolf father 100 years ago. I will overlook the fact that the werewolf, Quinton, has mommy issues from accidentally killing her in his wolfy form. And the fact that these issues arise several times throughout the book. I get it, he feels rightly guilty. Let’s move on to the present. Serry, who looks strikingly like Quinton’s dead fiance, Serenity, enters his life after her abusive fiance dies in a car wreck with Quinton.

They end up married and when Quinton reveals that he is a werewolf Serry takes it in stride. Really? I mean, I get that they love each other so very much (enter a big awwwww here) but if my boyfriend or husband was suddenly like, “yeah, I’m a werewolf” my response wouldn’t be “oh, ok”. However that’s basically what Serry does and they start off on the journey to find Quinton’s father to reverse the curse by killing him.

Quinton and Serry travel half way around the world and after Serry is taken and held hostage they end up killing Quinton’s father. YAY! Oh wait, this was at the half way point of the book. What?! At this point I’m thinking “what else could possibly happen to justify killing the bad guy at the halfway point?” I kept reading for a bit longer to find the answer to my question but honestly I didn’t get much further.

Quicksilver is a paranormal romance at the heart but there is just so much going on that I just couldn’t get into it. The main characters have a TON of internal dialogue that could have been cut out. As a reader I don’t need to know every tiny thing they are thinking. It’s more telling then showing. I could have done without the mommy issues and Quinton’s overly emotional state when Serry is taken. There is a point where he actually cuddles with the woman’s blouse to sleep. *Sigh* I want my male characters to be strong yet emotional, but this was a bit much for me. I wanted the evil father to be the sole purpose of the book instead of it turning halfway through in another direction. I lost interest quickly after his death.

This story starts out with Quinton back in the 1800's. That is where his story begins. Present day we find Serry married to her husband Collin who she is in an abusive relationship with. One night Collin's car hits Quinton's and sends them both to the hospital. There Quinton sees Serry and thinks that she is Serenity. At the same time Serry is wondering how she is seeing the man from the dreams she has been having. Collin dies from his injuries and Serry is left to wonder if she should feel guilty that Collin is gone. Quinton and Serry come across each other a short time later and start dating.

The story progresses with them dating and later marrying. They want to have children but Quinton does not want them to have the werewolf curse. So they set out to find a cure for Quinton. One that he thinks requires him to kill his father to end the curse. It was a rollar coaster ride of emotions, action, adventure and romance. Every time I thought something was going good for them something else would come their way and happen. I enjoyed reading it, liked the characters although I didn't feel real connected to any of them. The story was well told and progressed at smooth pace. The love that Quinton and Serry have for one another was what romance should be. We learned a little about each of their backgrounds but not really anything about the side characters. The side characters played out their roles in the story ok though.

Overall I would give this a 3.5 star rating. It was a good read, I just felt some things were repetitive throughout. It has a happy ending but I'm still left wondering what Quinton and Serry's dreams mean with the werewolves and how did Serry's dad have the cure. I would like to read more from this author in the future though.(less)

Quicksilver has a lot to offer readers of the paranormal genre. If werewolves, betrayal, and romance are what you’re looking for in your next paranormal read then this book is for you.

Spraycar has created a fantastic plot that takes you from the Quinton’s past were he became a Were and lost the love of his life in childbirth then quickly thrusts you into the future. ~Quicksilver is an amazing read and a perfect Paranormal Fantasy for The Wytch's Mirror with Werewolves, Magic and even Witches. It is an in depth story with love and romance along with mystery and mystic. Quicksilver was on the whole, average. Thats not to say it wasn't written well or thought out nicely, it was, but there are just some things that truely bugged me about this book.

When I started reading this book, I though "this book is awesome!" and I flew through the pages. I just wish this still was the case half-way through.

Basically, Quicksilver is about the eternal love between Serry and Quinton. They have a little problem with Quinton being a werewolf, and to cure him from that, they'll have to face Quinton's father and kill him.

Even though eternal love and reincarnation of your lovers soul isn't really my thing, I didn't find it annoying in this book. It was very well done and not so in-your-face. We start the book by seeing Quinton as he was as newly turned werewolf in the 19th century. I love historic novels, and it was a great introduction to the story.

The story then unfolds like you would expect it to. I won't spoil anything so there isn't much I can say about it. Then, in the middle of the book, something strange happens. You know, the big conflict every book has? It's solved in the middle of the book. Yeah.

Let me repeat that for you. The big problem the book is about, is solved half-way through the story. Every tension arc meets here. That means after that, normally, a book is finished. You may put a few chapters after it, to tell about what becomes of our heroes now. But not another 150 pages. 'Cause really, there isn't that much to tell any more. It might be too harsh to say the final half of the book was boring. But it definitely wasn't urging me on to read either.

Another issue I had with the solving of the big problem was how it was solved. One second, we're watching good old Quinton being not-so-heroic (wish I could tell more about that, but that would be spoiling) and the second after that, we're deus ex machina-ing all over the place! I can understand help from unexpected places, but this was taking that a little too far. What also struck me was that Quinton suddenly changed as character, without a clear reason for it. He turns from a normal guy into some kind of preacher. Let me quote a little bit of conversation between him and a white witch that helps him on his quest:

"My dear, Safrina, there is no need to fear. We will triumph over my father and his pack. There is nowhere they can go and nothing they can do that will thwart our efforts. We will win this war."

Do you speak to your friends in this way? I'm sure as hell I don't. It almost feels like we have two different books glued together in the middle, with different characters that bear the same name.

What also returns in the book quite often are dreams. Yet at the end of the book I still had no idea where these dreams come from or what they mean. Are they predictions of the future? Fears of our characters? Messages from above? As with other questions in this book, they aren't answered. There were so many unanswered questions that I though this book must be the start of a series, yet I can't seem to find any facts to confirm that.

This book is one of unfulfilled promises. If it would have ended about halfway, I would have given it a higher rating. Still, this is only my opinion. If you're interested, don't hesitate to see for yourself.(less)
