I love this series by Ennis. Is it crude? Yes. Graphic (sex/violence)? Oh yes. But I really do love the characters and really get a kick out of them. And the world that Ennis has created - where super heroes are shmucks just like the rest of us, or worse - is endlessly captivating. Was volume 7 my favorite volume? No. Sad to say, there was a lot of lovey-dovey detail about Wee Hughie and his love affair with Annie January (aka Starlight) and not nearly enough story given to other "boys" like The More...

I like the fact that Hughie and Starlight's relationship continues to surprise - the general teleology has been clear, but Ennis has tempered the lighter, almost comic-relief aspects of it (when considered alongside the main story) with suprising deftness - the long-awaited inevitable confrontation is genuinely painful (even if one questions whether Hughie would be quite so quick to accept such a more negative interpretation of the Seven footage). Other than that, a bit of a placeholder volume b More...

Normally The Boys is a sort of guilty-pleasure for me, so this one took me completely by surprise. The character dynamics and development were phenomenal, and Garth Ennis proved his talent for varied writing by composing a bit of romance without the usual sap. I don't know how he pulled it off, I would have expected such a thing to be nauseatingly out of place in a story such as this, yet I can't resist reading on to find out what happens. As the story has developed, Garth has done a brilliant j More...

This is the soap-opera book of the series - besides a storyline involving a disgraced hero taking command of a weird kids-oriented supergroup who barely have powers, the bulk of the book focuses on Hughie and Starlight's relationship. Yup, this is the one where Hughie finds out about Starlight being part of the Seven and what she had to do to get into it...

This is probably my favorite of all the trades of The Boys up to now, if only because the overkill in violence and sex and all the rest finally made way for a little bit of humanity and such in the characters. I didn't really see it coming, but the situation with Hughie and Starlight combined with the Butcher handling things the best way he could? Really well done across the board.
It's weird to think I'm actually on the back end of this series now, after resisting it for so long.

Another great Boys Volume, I am really enjoying the series after a couple of upsets earlier on in the series.
I am still really enjoying The Frenchman and I love his relationship with The Female, I hope they will do a spin off and focus on all of their adventures...more peeing on children's ice creams please.
Recommended to fans of dark humor.

Things come to a head with the secrets our loving couple of Wee Hughie and Annie have been keeping. Handled very well, both in the writing and in the graphics, one can easily become involved in the emotional states of the characters.
There is also a different presentation of a Super group; seems they aren't all egotistical maniacs.

After being around since the very beginning and offering very little to the series the romantic subplot of “The Boys” gets resolution. Hughie and the team finally discover that our superhero hating protagonist is actually dating a superhero. Sounds like a goofy scenario, but Ennis makes good things out of it.
We are gradually getting to a point in this tale where goofing around and easy black and white conflicts are being replaced by storytelling delivered in shades of gray. The main plot of the More...

Dark. That's how this book hits me. I can't help it, I know that's so over-used these days, but when I think about how Butcher and Malchemical and a couple of the Boys act, that's where my brain goes.
This is a serious book, many dramatic turns and little to redeem the optimist inside me. I did *not* think Ennis would take us here, and as I saw it unfolding I just assumed he'd let us off the hook sooner or later.
Now I really want to read the next volume immediately - this suffering has to end and More...

This volume is all about Hughie and Starlight's relationship. It seems to be the set up to something along the story and I'm liking it.
The artwork is at par with the other volumes of this series, really top notch.
A good volume, but somewhat darker, story-wise... But a good one, nonetheless.

Ennis' writing is still sharp and nasty, but you wonder just how much more supes-bashing there is to be done. There doesn't seem to be anything he hasn't already said about the hypocrisy and corruption of capes. Still, it looks like things are coming to a head, so maybe the big showdown and wrap-up is near.

Ennis continues to show he knows how to write engaging comic fiction while dialing up the raunchiness to a level that makes Howard Stern and Chuck Palahniuk say a few rosaries. Never has the concept of a superhero seemed so damn villainous and dastardly.

i read this in single issue form, and i tend drop everything around me when the new one comes out. Quite possibly Eniss' best work. bold statement, but i stand by it.

Hughie, Hughie... you simp, what are you doing? You are obviously being played.
Ugh, Butcher is starting to make me so mad.

It's building up to something, but it's really hard to determine exactly what that will be.

Another great volume. I’m really loving the focus on the development of Hughie’s character. We get to see more and more of his thoughts and ideas. I especially love his reactions to The Boys’ plans. He definitely is the most interesting character throughout the series. I can’t wait to see what happens now that he knows Annie is Starlight. This should really get interesting. Oh! And I almost forgot about The Homelander’s plans. I wonder how VA and The Boys are going to react to this turn of event More...

The best volume of The Boys yet, even if not as funny as previous volumes.

Pretty much talking and not too much plot developing. But still, good stuff.

Some nice drama as things that have been built up for a while come to a close in regards to Hughie's love life. I unfortunately read volume 8 before 7. It's such a vulgar series I don't know why I read it (and I understand perfectly why Paul Levitz no longer wanted to publish it.) I guess this type of content is to be expected what with the creative teams other works.

I don't mean to imply that the only thing going on in this story is personal relationships.
There's good action. Good mystery. A lot of worthwhile social commentary. A lot of lampooning of superhero comics themselves.
All of this is done well, is entertaining, and is (almost entirely) done in service to the overarching story.
(Continued in Volume 8.)

Wow, I got so angry when reading this volume! Always a good sign when you are shouting at characters as if they are real people. Some monumental stupidity featured in this volume but I continue to love it when Frenchie is on the page. I'm very curious as to what will happen next for The Boys.

Massacre graphique sur le premier chapitre, heureusement la situation s'améliore par la suite. Episode sympathique au final, à défaut d'être exceptionnel.
