Deep Navigation is the 2010 Boskone Book by Boskone’s Guest of Honor Alastair Reynolds. It contains a broad spectrum of his work, from his first published story, "Nunivak Snowflakes," through "The Receivers" and "Monkey Suit," both published within the last year, plus an introduction by his friend, and former Boskone Guest, Stephen Baxter. It is well-known that the scope o...more

After being disappointed by Zima Blue and Other Stories, Deep Navigation has been a positive surprise. Most of the stories are based on original ideas - Nunivak Snowflakes, Stroboscopic, Byrd Land Six and On the Oodnadatta come to mind; some others take a look at old concepts with a new twist, like Viper or Soirée. Even though Reynolds is mostly a master of long story arcs (as seen in the Revelation Space universe), Fresco is probably his shortest story so far and a small gem as such. To be fair...more

STORY BY STORY (SO FAR:)

NB: Asterisks (*) before titles indicate the stories I thought were best.

Nunivak Snowflakes - Messages from the future sent in rains of fish; intelligent spacetime inhabiting the mechanical arm of a Inupiat teenager; a lone Canadian spy trying to keep ahead of several world superpowers. This is a wonderfully weird story, a wholly unique idea, and the first piece Reynolds ever published (at the age of 24!). Great start to this collection.

Monkey Suit - A nice little piece,...more

A fantastic set of short stories from one of the best writers working in SF today. A couple of pieces from the Revelation Space universe, but many in other settings. It was particularly interesting watching him work through some recurring themes and concepts over time. If you haven't tried Reynolds and are wondering if you'd enjoy his work, this would be a great place to start.

A collection of short stories. Only a couple were any good. The rest were horror-shaped without the horror, or gimmick stories insufficiently written to hold up the gimmick. "Fresco" and "The Sledge-Maker's Daughter" were the ones to bother reading, I guess.

This is an excellent collection of short stories by Alastair Reynolds, one of the best authors in modern science fiction. This would make an excellent introduction for someone new to Alastair Reynolds who doesn't want to commit to a full-length novel.

He writes some really out-there stuff. It tends to be hit or miss as to whether or not I like his short stories. And even some of the most compelling stories have disappointing endings. But they are worth it just for the ideas.
Ian
Alastair Reynolds never disappoints. Original, challenging ideas run through each of these short pieces. Some reflect concepts explored in his novels. I hope he finds time to develop the rest in longer form.

I loved Alastair Reynolds Revelation space books; unfortunately there were few stories of that caliber in this collection, most contain great ideas but failed to grab me before they were over.

Nunivak Snowflakes 2/5
Monkey Suit 3/5
The Fixation 5/5
Feeling Rejected 2/5
Fury 4/5
Stroboscopic 3/5
The Receivers 4/5
Byrd Land Six 3/5
The Star Surgeon's Apprentice 4/5
On the Oodnadatta 3/5
Fresco 2/5

Overall 3/5.

This collection of short stories by Alastair Reynolds is for the true fan only, if you've read everything else he's written and just want to say that you've read it all. There's a reason most of these stories weren't published in an anthology before. Although there are a couple of good ones such as "The Star Surgeon's Apprentice" that might deserve a follow-up, most of these are subpar for Al Reynolds, and some are downright boring. "Zima Blue" and "Galactic North" are much better collections of...more

Not a five star due to the appalling amount of typos throughout the book.

Of course that does not detract an iota from the considerable talent of Alastair Reynolds that in these 15 stories shows the full range of his writing skills. Those that only know him for his Revelation Space series are in for a treat.

Highly recommended.

This is a good collection of short stories by one of my absolutely favorite authors. Reynolds has an amazing imagination and comes up with truly unique sci-fi ideas, whether they are of the short variety or the novel length. I always walk away shaking my head at his story telling as well as his wonderful writing. His universes are so easy to fall into. Short stories are hard for a reason, and while not every one of them is seemless, they still flow effectively and keep you wanting more. If you k...more

Alastair Reynolds, former scientist and now full-time writer. Most of what he writes is science fiction, with a strong concern for scientific verisimilitude (although he is prepared to break the rules for the sake of a good story). He has lived in England, Scotland and the Netherlands where he worked as an astrophysicist for the European Space Agency until 2004, but now makes his home back in his...more
