Graphic Novel. The crew's finally made it to Japan, and I'm totally digging Yorick's outfit here -- the longer hair, the eyeshadow, the black bowler, the surgeon's mask, the oversized suit. It's like David Bowie meets Japan.
Also looking awesome: Dr. Mann, doing the punk thing in her origin story. Not looking awesome: Dr. Mann's extremely white-looking Japanese and Chinese parents. Come ON, artists; all your chicks look THE SAME. Arrg. We also see Alter's origins, though I'm still not sure of...more

Ampersand's story from volume 5 (book: Y: The Last Man]) is finally resolved, and Yorick and 355 head to Tokyo to get him from a Canadian pop star turned crime lord.
I honestly can't believe the monkey's story has been going on this long. I feel like this book hit a slow stretch when the characters reached the Pacific Ocean. It hasn't been a bad book and stands up to repeat readings, but it doesn't have quite the same verve as the earlier collections. I was also bummed by how few issues Pia Guerra drew i...more

Okay, the monkey is special now? Y: The Last Man goes right back off a cliff with flashbacks and character history that is far too cheeky for its own good (the capuchin’s twin was stillborn, so now that talk about Elvis in issue one is ironic, get it?). Vaughan shows a lot of the worst elements of later seasons of Lost, going too far and reaching too far for the illusion of depth. Only so many characters can show romantic interest so many times.
And again with the ninjas.

I was suspicious of "Y the Last Man" right up to about "Safeword," and I'm still not a hundred percent convinced. But I've been enjoying every volume more than the last and with this one I'm about 98% there.
I absolutely love this volume; it's got entertainment and charm, plus depth and challenges; it plays with and remixes cultural stereotypes on one page, and knocks them over on the next. The character development and dialogue continues to be stellar and this storyli...more

Definitely a build up book.
I'm still not big on the monkey, but I sort of like how this book put everyone a few steps closer to mortal peril in preparation for some raucous finale.
The longer the world goes without men, the more apt I am to believe that even if they can get dudes back in the world, it's not going to work out so good. Especially if it's only human dudes they can get back...there are a lot of ecosystems that involve all sorts of male mammals.
Poor the world.
Also Yoric...more

Great action in this volume, but this loses a star for its depiction of the Israeli-Palestine conflict.
Talk about a misrepresentation!! Where a handful of people are killed by a suicide bomber, Israel carpet-bombs a city or bulldozes a town. Jesus, could you be any more biased?
Palestine is an oppressed, controlled state (that isn't even allowed to be a state).
I wish Brian Vaughan had been a little more informed. It's sad that Israel, with its bloodthirsty agenda, is appreciated by ...more

I hadn't read any "Y" in about 2 years before getting to read this volume last month, and I was amazed at how much of it came back to me. the characters are extraordinarily well-crafted, all with strong, and unique personalities. this volume begins to unlock the Great Mystery of this entire series, and is pretty awesome.

I read volumes 1 through 8 straight through. It really sucks you in. It's by either 7 or 8 that the gag started to get a little stale. I wanted to slap the next character that prattled on with their time-before-men tale or anecdote. I think this series could have wrapped up sooner. Still fun read.

In its 10-volume entirety, I can think of few works in any medium that speak truth to sexual-power so forcefully and with so few excursions into polemics. I'd put it in the same league as the X-Ray Spex "Germfree Adolescents" album in that regard.

Former Clevelander Brian K. Vaughan begins to wrap up his series about the last man on Earth and his male monkey -- the only survivors of a plague that wiped out all the other males -- human and animal -- in the world.

Picks up the pace a bit, which is welcome. After 7 books of western culture's response to the plague, now we're off to Japan to see how things are going there.

Y definitely peaked around the second and third trade paperbacks. That said, this volume is still a good read for those who are already following the series.

LOST fans; Every adult who thinks comic books are stupid.
Incredible writing from the mind of LOST's Brian K Vaughan. Highly recommended, but beware, it has "mature themes" and is not for the kiddos.

Yorick and company continue their travels. Various groups of women search for Yorick. Still entertaining, but more of the same, as a rule.

I love this whole series. It gets slow around volume 5-7, as Vaughan struggles for a way to keep the plot interesting, but it is awesome.

This is easily becoming one of my favorite series of all time. I just wish 355 and Yorick would get it on already!
