i had quite a hard time deciding how to classify this book, because while kurt von hammerstein and his family were definitely real people and large parts of the book are factual, and even backed up by documents and photographs,it also contains fictional interviews and conversations with people who are now dead.

in the end i decided to classify the book as non-fictional history for two reasons. first, because i thought that the amount of factual material outweighed the fictional, and secondly, bec

A book that is part-novel part-biography, Hammerstein revolves around the mysterious, silent figure of general Kurt von Hammerstein, highest officer in the Reichswehr before Hitler's ascendancy to the chancellery in 1933 and his seemingly retreat from active duties in 1934, a retreat he welcomed even if it was forced by Hitler's circle who rightly saw in Hammerstein an adversary to their power.

The key-question of the book is how some of the elite from the German society of the 20s and 30s could

Recommends it for: Who appreciates ambiguous historical figures.

Hammerst ...more

One problem for any kind of writer is what to do about that character, or that person, who is not very talkative. Fiction writers have more tools in their toolbox for dealing with this issue. After all, one can always write the story in the first-person point of view of the silent person, thus allowing ourselves the luxury of all of those interior monologues that go on inside the character’s head when they are sitting there, silent, exasperating all those other characters who do not have the aut ...more

Meilleur livre magazine Lire 2010.

it may be stilistically uneven, but is nevertheless a nice read.

This is a beautiful book about the last general of the Weimar republic who, with the aid of his brilliant daughters and a network of their Jewish lovers funneled secrets of Hitler's plan to invade Russia, to his Soviet contacts. It is a book about family, the horrors of WWII Germany, and how a retired 'lazy general' tried to subvert Hitler.

An interesting "biography" (with a little bit of novelization) about General Kurt von Hammerstein & his family in the Hitler years.
