Brody's Ghost, Volume 1 (Brody's Ghost #1)
by
Mark Crilley
Brody hoped it was just a hallucination. But no, the teenaged ghostly girl who'd come face to face with him in the middle of a busy city street was all too real. And now she was back, telling him she needed his help in hunting down a dangerous killer, and that he must undergo training from the spirit of a centuries-old samurai to unlock his hidden supernatural powers. This book is set in the not so distant future and has a boarder-line apocalyptic feel to it. Our main character Brody wakes up one day in his dump of an apartment and heads out to the streets to beg for money while playing his guitar. After a while he notices a girl staring at him from a parked van. Brody being the goof ball that he is decides that it’s a staring competition and returns the glare. After a while the girl looks away and Brody has his first and only victory of the day.

Brody's Ghost is a graphic novel series centered around a sad man named Brody who finds out he can see ghosts (hence the title...). After a bad breakup with his girlfriend, Nicole, he lets his life get into ruin, until one day, while he is on the sidewalk busking for change, he sees a ghost. Later on, he finds out the ghost is named Talia, and she has a mission for him. She introduces him to an unusual mentor that helps him get his life back into shape and gives him purpose in the world.

I like Mark Crilley's work, and this was good, but not great. The two problems I had with the book were the pacing and the central character.
The pacing wouldn't have been as bad if the story wasn't serialized. The break point was very frustrating, as this first book was basically a prologue to what will probably be the real story.

Brody has hit rock bottom. His girlfriend dumped him, he can't keep a job, and personal hygiene- who cares? None of this strikes him as odd until he meets Talia. This is a pretty big feat in and of itself since she is a ghost! Talia informs Brody she has been looking for a ghostseer like him since she died five years ago. She needs a human to help her complete a super super good deed on earth in order to be let into heaven.

Mark Crilley is *criminally* underrated in the comics industry. He's beloved by those that know him, but too few know him. Akiko, his earlier work, is a masterpiece that can most easily be described as Star Wars meets Wizard of Oz filtered through the sensibilities of Miyazaki. After that, the four part Miki Falls is a wonderful piece of supernatural romance.

Alex's Thoughts: This book is very cool and I really liked reading it. I like all the pictures inside and its easy to read. The story is very funny. I liked reading about Brody and how he is taught to fight.
Yara's Thoughts: As a mother when you see your child read a book with such enthusiasm, the book becomes a hit for me. He read this and was so excited to talk about it to me. He then immediately pick up Volume 2 to read. The graphics are great and very easy to read. The story is fast paced. I...more

Brody is a slacker who makes money busking with his guitar on street corners. One day he meets the ghost of a young girl who informs Brody that he is a "ghost seer" and demands that he help her make her way into the afterlife by resolving issues from her living days. To that end she takes Brody to meet the ghost of a great Sensei who will train the young man to use his (apparently formidable) untapped psychic powers. The story is set in a near-future dystopia (which I always enjoy), and the styl...more
Purchased this because I watch and have learned some from Mark Crilley's YouTube Learn to Draw videos and he always plugs his books at the end of his videos.
The story jumps about a bit, and I read the book entirely in one 45 minute session. I'm on the fence. I can't decide if I like the story's potential enough to get the rest or not. I'm ambivalent.

Although I gave Brody's Ghost, Volume 1 3 stars, I actually believe it deserves 3 1/2.
Mark Crilley's artwork is AMAZING! and very detailed, nearly realistic. The story is intriguing & I feel compelled to continue the series to reach a conclusion.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants an easy read (I read it in less than 30 minutes, during commercials while watching TV ;D ).
is easy to follow, has the idea of an interesting mystery & maybe, something more. . .

Ghosts, goblins, weres, and witches are around every corner now. So I realize the whole “I-See-Dead-People” story line isn’t all that original anymore, but when it’s done right with style it can still capture my attention and imagination.
Brody’s Ghost was a quick dose of fun. The illustrations bring these characters to life with energy, attitude, and humor. I found myself staring at several of the pictures trying to absorb the depth and detail. Beautiful pages.

A decent manga knock-off in black and white.
Brody's girlfriend dumped him and he's gone in a mild downward spiral--just not bathing and cutting his hair/going from one dead end job to another. Teenage stuff. No serious issues here.
Of course things get more complicated when he sees a ghost who needs his help. But he has nothing better to do and he could use the reward money so he decides to give it his best shot.

3.5 stars.
When I said this would be a quick read, I underestimated myself. I read the first volume of Brody's Ghost in half an hour. Not that this is a huge accomplishment, because the book really is quite short. It's hard to give a solid rating to something that only took up thirty minutes of my time.

Just your average boy-who-sees-dead-people meets girl-who-is-a-ghost story. This is a fair bit darker than Crilley's earlier work, though it's really the banter that makes it enjoyable. I was less a fan of the art, though; the heavy use of gray shading instead of tones/hatching/etc made the pages look washed out and low contrast.
The volume is very slim, and overall, I ended up feeling that it was a little too brief to warrant a GGNFT nom. Volume 2 comes out in early 2011.

Once again, I guess I'm not a fan of graphic novels/manga/comic books. They are quick reads... very quick, but I don't feel that I get a really good look at the characters. That being said, I do think this one was well done. I liked the art work, and the dialogue was good. I probably won't go on and read the second volume, however. This was for a class.
Brody meets the ghost of a dead girl, who claims she was murdered and she needs his help to track down her killer and bring him to justice. Brody can barely believe he's talking to a ghost, let along being asked to be a detective and to train with the ghost of a samurai warrior! Fun, short, fast-paced manga-ish style graphic novel with great illustrations.
From the streets of a futuristic city rises a new hero. Brody has to let go of everything to gain the one thing he needs, a destiny. Aided by a ghost tasked to do a "life task" before she can move on to the afterlife, and a spirit that is himself haunted by a distant failure, he must strike a blow for the good against a serial killer who prays on the innocent.
This is a very quick read. Brody is down on his luck and then sees a ghost who wants him to help her. The drawings are very well done, but it seems to me that the backgrounds are all drawn very run down and littered with debris. Maybe this is to set the mood of the story? I'm looking forward to reading book two.
Sometimes it takes a dead girl to teach you how to live.
I enjoyed this book because it reminded me of "Harold and Maude" a bit and also touches on the special life-paralyzing depression that is sometimes caused by special exes.
I think teens would like this title a lot and I'm looking forward to seeing how the story develops in the rest of the volumes! Also, "Jill T. ROX!"

It was good, but not great. I just don't care for the main character, Brody. He's a putz, but I wasn't given enough to see him as a lovable putz that I could root for. He just seemed like the guy the author chose to have cool things happen to. I suppose I wanted more depth. I liked the character design for Talia, however, and the art was clean and competent—even appealing—so the production felt professional. I will probably pick up the second volume to see if the story picks up.
